- It's time for a Project 981 Autumn update - featuring puddle lights, wind deflectors, power steering feel, and brake fluid (where it's not supposed to be).
● The puddle light wiring kit is available from RocketWires: rocketwires.co...
** Note that you will need a friendly Porsche specialist to help you code-activate the door controllers via PIWIS; installing the lights and wiring alone won't make them work.
● I bought the OEM puddle lights, and LED bulbs, from Design911: www.design911....
● The tinted wind deflector is made by Made in Garforth: madeingarforth...
● Thanks to Hungry Eye for the use of their GoPros and rigging equipment: www.hungryeye....
● Boxster profile graphic courtesey of Santos, on Planet-9.com: www.planet-9.c...
With various project bits and pieces in hand, it was time for an update on the Boxster GTS. If you have any experience of leaky 981 brake fluid reservoirs that might help me understand what’s going on, do please post in the comments. Thank you!
Keen to see how you get on wiring up the door lights. I opted for a rechargeable battery-powered solution I found on ebay from PorscheMaster. Works well, but obviously I'd prefer a hardwired one...
Yes indeed. Well, the theory is watertight. But there is scope for hiccups - the door card, the wiring itself, and then finding the correct sub-menu in PIWIS. But that's all part of the fun!
All being well, a full video in the next month or two. 👍
Hi Christian, thanks for the informative upgrade on puddle light. Can you show more details on the puddle lights and the lume. Did you need to go to the Porsche centre to ask them to program the puddle lights. Did you get the cables from the Porsche Centre?
@@dennisling6004 My pleasure Dennis.
I’m part way through the light upgrade and will do a complete video once it’s all done.
In the meantime have a look at my ‘door card’ video to see a little more about the wiring.
The light is OEM but the loom is third party. Yes - I need to go back to my friendly specialist for help with code-enabling the door module, once it’s all done.
Fantastic Christian, you will need a Piwis 2 for the GT3 RS map as long a yr car is 2014+
Great - thank you. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that the RS map hits the sweet spot I'm seeking...
@@christianprattI hope so. We all prefer different things but I’m really liking the GT3RS coding with Power Steering Plus turned on too.
@@mheeler Useful to know - thank you!
I'm not too worried about car park-speed assistance, but if the RS map does add back a little extra assistance at the higher speeds / higher loads, that would work well for me too.
@@christianpratt "She" will appreciate the assistance at lower speed and that is obviously a bonus too !
FYI, I was just messing around a bit more (turning on the G Force, Performance and Expert screens and the deployment speed for the rear spoiler because I could) and saw the full list of my steering coding options were 981S/Cayman, 991C2 (&4), GT3, TOP (?), 918, GT4, GT3RS, 981 Spyder and "Reserve'.
@@mheeler Bingo - that's the full list. Apparently, TOP doesn't seem any different to normal, and the system won't let you select/apply 918. I gather that the GT4 map isn't usefully different (though you'd think that was the one to have), and then there's the RS map.
Which module is the rear spoiler in? (With or without rules?) I fancy nudging my numbers slightly on that too...
Great videos, Christian. I'm really enjoying them. I ordered the Rocket wires loom for the puddle lights but it also includes connections for a "door pull light" and a "door pocket light". I will be taking on this complete mod. Do you have any suggestions?
Cheers,
David
Hello David. Thanks for the comment; glad that you're enjoying the videos!
My first thought is - why didn't I buy this loom?! Seems it's now listed on their website, whereas it wasn't a few months back. Hmmmm.
In terms of suggestions, you're going to need to remove the door card (see my video for how to do that), and you're going to need to buy suitable LEDs for the handle, pocket and the puddle lamp. I'd get those as a first step.
Thereafter, it's actually pretty straightforward to install. I haven't yet finished mine, so can't share my video. But the instructions from Rocketwire are more than good enough to follow - and that would be my recommendation.
Your other challenge is going to be finding a dealer/specialist who can code the door module, through PIWIS. I have found the former but can't yet be certain about identifying the specific module, nor how to enable it (though I have an idea). Rocketwires don't provide that detail.
Let's continue to compare notes as we go, if you like. You can reach my via the email listed on my channel About section.
Hi Chris, I located and purchased all the parts needed already (Rocket Wires includes the list with the wire loom instructions) from a California retailer called a EuropeanOEMParts Direct. Because the factory logo puddle lights seem expensive to me ($165), I bought good quality aftermarket ones for $45.
I haven't found info on installing the different LEDs into the door pocket or the door handle, but that might be quite self-explanatory once I have the parts in hand with the door card pulled.
I'll be doing this in about 2 weeks' time, and I'll certainly keep you in the loop via your email.
Great to be in touch.
@@davidmoralesbello2852 Excellent - thanks for the details David.
I'm in two minds now whether to start again with the expanded loom - I really like the idea of the door handle lights, and know that it's relatively easy to wire it all up. Watch this space!
ok back peddling like mad here as Nick at Garforth has just called me, their payment system is down, now ordered
I found Nick very helpful. Glad he's got you sorted (and the website, by all accounts!). Which one have you ended up choosing/buying?
10 mm ultimate version clear
I mean I dont see the logic in buying anything else, it has to have max stiffness and you want to see clearly through it, including in winter
A Porsche logo etc looks great but that is for somewhere else on the car
@@DMR777-p5o Excellent. Nick sorted me out one and the same as yours as well, to use as a GoPro mount (it was optically flawed - a second), which has already proved its worth. I'm happy enough with the 8mm tinted version, albeit I haven't had to look through it yet at the national speed limit on the motorway! But around town, and down the lanes, it's spot on.
ok coming back on the wind deflector, it looks nice but the thickness of the unit has actually nothing to do with the mountings which are still the same whether it is 8mm or 10mm and my 10mm ultimate version is by no means rock solid in its mountings, so I am just wondering why these werent precision cut wider, for a tighter fit?
I think that’s a question Nick at Garforth is best placed to answer.
My own 8mm deflector seems tight enough, so I can’t really say.
I own a 2015 Cayman GTS with the option 630 light design package - but there are no puddle lights. So therefore I am very interested in your mod. Can you specify the parts (cables) you bought from rocketwires as they are not listed on their website specific to the 981 platform?
Hi there. Thanks for commenting.
The kit is made to order, on the understanding that the customer provides the lights AND is responsible for the coding.
Drop them an email if you’re interested… I hope to have mine done this autumn.
I did the perspex wind deflector, it lasted for about a week, before I went back to OEM, where did you get yours from pls?
Interesting!
The link for mine is in the description. It is a decent lump of Perspex, fits well and its nicely finished. I'm hoping it'll do more than a week's worth of driving!
@@christianprattGreat place to mount a GoPro too 🫣
@@mheeler Funnily enough, the matter is already in hand... 😀
There are lots of people selling ill-fitting 4mm thick versions.
The one featured in the video is 8mm thick and a 10mm clear version is also available from the same UK supplier.
@@DryeNick Spot on Nick.
And I have a 10mm one for mounting cameras too, so as not to damage my 'daily' tinted one. Nice and stiff.
trying to buy anything from Garforth is virtually impossible }{}{
Really, they were really good for me, ordered Friday came Tuesday. Etched as well 🤔
Amazing that a GTS doesn't come with the puddle lights in the mirrors. The ones in the door will certainly be useful when getting out of the car but not when arriving at the car at night and in the rain. Ideally, the car should have both as standard. What would the extra cost have been to the customer, especially without the ridiculous Porsche tax on all those little comfort items that most, much cheaper cars come equipped with as standard ? I hope that all that nickel-and-diming will one day come back to bite Porsche in the ass...
We love our Porsches in spite of their trim and specifications...
The Light Design package, which adds the footwell lights, puddle lights, glove box light, wing mirror exteior down lights (I >think
I'm in NZ. My car has the wing mirror lights, glove box light, foot well lights but not the vanity, interior door handle (didn't know that was a possibility) or the puddle lights. Surprising how options are offered in different markets.
@@Dave-un7fh Curious! Whether it's local legislation, or simply Porsche responding to local market precedents, who knows?
With the puddle lights included, I think I'm at the limits of what's possible in terms of retro-fit. But that should all be enough for me...
