    She succeeded in making a spinner long ago (October, 2010). I went through a somewhat similar process of first, carefully observing videos, then reading all I could find about geometric origami and tessellation, and finally just experimenting with various designs. I found Jeremy Shafer's flasher instructions very helpful. I did go through a lot of different designs before I found the one that works. I used a more mathematical approach rather than an intuitive one. More left brain than right.

    Just wondering if you were paying attention. It is hard. However, it's incredibly rewarding when you do get it. It takes a lot of patience, persistence and reams of paper. As a dummy who figured it out without benefit of a tutorial, I made one so that others wouldn't have quite the struggle. I guess it's true there's just no pleasing everyone. And, that is sad.

    It's whatever works to raise the bottom up above the folds when the spinner is upside down so when you turn it over and pull the "flaps" to spin it, the flaps don't drag. A marble rounds the bottom which sometimes causes the spinner to travel but if the bottom is too flat, it just wants to wobble and not really spin.

    I use 20 lb printer paper that you get at an office supply store. I don't know why but the colored paper always gives me the best results. I just print the crease pattern onto the letter size paper. I do experiment with the crease pattern size by importing it as an image and adjusting the image size.

    Nice long spin! I put my spinning top tutorial up on RUclips a few days ago. check it out. I'll bet you can make one that even spins longer than the hat tent flasher.

    @OrigamiTourist2010 Thank you for all of your comments. Being new to origami and You Tube, I'm afraid I wasn't familiar with the proper etiquette. It WAS your videos that inspired me to figure out how to go about making a spinner and you're right about my ID, too. I'm especially impressed that you wrote a program to generate CPs. When it comes to programming, I can write a little bit beyond "hello world" but not much and certainly nothing like what you are talking about. So, thank you for

    I see your main inspiration (Jeremy Shafer) commented on your spinner. I like the fact that A. you worked hard to discover for yourself how to do this instead of whining for a tutorial, B. you took the time and effort to make this tutorial, and C. you described the laborious process of reverse engineering the spinner. That's all very positive. So far the only other person who did this, without any self-aggrandizement, I might mention, was bibinca, whose initiative and spirit I greatly admire.

    I'm not sure what you mean. I print the grid from the origami tessilation site, import it into a draw program I have and draw my grid lines there saving a copy I can print out at any time but for my first attempt, I printed out the grid and drew in the lines. Saving it in a vector drawing program does allow more freedom in manipulatng the pattern..

    You don't have to have a marble. What you don't want is for the bottom to be flat. I've made successful spinners without a marble. Just make sure as it is drying that there is at least a slight peak at the center.

    You kind of push the edges toward the center a little bit at a time. Eventually, it will work itself into shape. It just takes patience and persistence. Keep at it. You'll get it! :)

    If humidity is an issue, you might put the spinner in an airtight container with a desiccant packet. You find them in all kinds of products but most often medicines. I looked it up and there are several sites on the internet that show you how to make your own. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you.

    @yinkungadgil007
    Was this your first try? If so, 5 seconds is pretty good. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have not been able to duplicate my efforts. I've probably made at least 2 dozen spinners trying different papers, more precise folding, etc. I seem to average 10 seconds, maybe a little more. Still, 10 seconds is a pretty decent time. All I can tell you is to keep trying - be very precise with your folding, make sure your office paper is the light stuff.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur

    @hamsterboy959
    I believe the paper matters. I just recently tried elephant hide paper. It's a stiff, thick, tough, expensive paper and it worked. It spins for around 10 seconds. However, I've found, just like OrigamiTourist2010, that the cheap office copy paper works the best. I also believe size matters. I started out using a square around 18 cm but I've found that 15cm works best for me. And I do mean paper.

    Just wondering if you were paying attention. It is hard. However, when you do get it, it's extremely rewarding. And you can if you're willing to put in the time, effort, and don't forget, reams of paper. Take it from me, the dummy who figured it out without a tutorial and made one available for those who couldn't. I hope I'm not wasting my breath here. If I am, then it is sad.

    I'm guessing it's the granite countertop. Just kidding, although a smooth surface does make a difference. I believe the one you're talking about is an octagonal spinner. I have yet to figure out the best way to fold it so I've stuck with trying to refine the hexagonal one which so far has given me 15 - 17 seconds at most - but it's still fun.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur

    @Maloriar The model was folded, then put in a container and covered with water until soaked through. The excess water was poured off and the model allowed to dry thoroughly.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur

    @katesmart100
    Yes. Initially, I printed the grid and drew my creases with a pencil. However, I have a drawing program that allows me to import pdfs and convert the files to a editable vector files so I imported the grid, drew my lines, and removed the original grid lines, leaving just the crease lines that I need to fold saved it as a jpg and that is what I print out.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  13 лет назад

    @megantiet101 Not at all? I had to create several before I got one that had a nice spin. I tried different size hexagonal centers, paper size, etc. If you locate the grin on Eric Gerdje's site, I think that hexagon size has worked well. Also, the paper size makes a difference. I usually stay between 5 & 6 inches. You really need precise folds. When complete, it needs to balance well. Not fall to one side.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  12 лет назад

    @phoenixandson
    That is probably the most difficult part but it is easier if you have precise folds. Many have difficulty with this step and I've been meaning to do a video but I just haven't been able to get to it. Perhaps this weekend.

    Paul, it doesn't matter which way you draw it, I've drawn it so many times and have several versions in a draw program that I probably used 2 different drawings and didn't realize it. You've got a sharp eye. I don't wet fold the model. I'll put up a video that shows me folding it plus the spinner you see soaking in my other video. I forgot all about it, pulled it out from the jar, let it dry several days and it is one of my best spinners.

    I wish there was. I tend to ruin mine because I get impatient. I`ve used a hair dryer, put it in a tube so more air can get to it, etc. Now that the temp gets into the nineties and above, I set it outside in the sun and wind and it dries much much faster. Sorry I don`t have a better response. Perhaps someone else has a suggestion?

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  12 лет назад

    It's great that you could make it! Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to make it any easier. It does get easier after you've made a dozen or so:-) Even so, I haven't been able to get one to spin longer than 10 or 12 seconds! I go back to it from time to time and try, though.

    The center is not a sink. If you fold all the creases correctly, then start wrapping the sides around, the center forms itself. I'm working on another video that might explain it better.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur

    There are two other videos showing you how to make this without lines. A relatively short video and a much longer video "director's cut" with much more detail.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  13 лет назад

    @TheAndreij
    Initially, I'd just print out the grid and draw my lines in. I decided I might need quite a few of these for experimentation so I imported the pdf grid from the origamitessellation site into a drawing program and used it to create the crease pattern that you see in the video. Once created, I just print it out on ordinary colored copy paper.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  13 лет назад

    @megantiet101 This probably isn't the issue but my husband can't get the spinner to spin. The release is very important. Again, let me know how it goes.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  13 лет назад

    @600paul
    Yes. The "secret" is that these are single tessellations. My explanation is in a video I've been working on but the detail is taking time so I made the gridless video first. I hope to get back to the video when I have more time to devote to it. I've been very busy with non-origami endeavors. I have made a 5, 8, and 10 sided spinner.

  • @TheOrigamiVoyeur
    @TheOrigamiVoyeur  12 лет назад

    He's changed his site since I did this video. Last time I looked, it was still there but harder to find. You don't have to use his grid. It was nice because it was a square but any isometric graph paper will do which you can find on the web. You could also try it without the graph paper. See my other tutorials on this spinner.

    No, he didn't. I watched his videos over and over, pausing it to see if I could follow his folds. Once I decided to use the isometric graph paper available on Eric Gjerde's site to make the hexagonal center, seeing the hexagon within the gridlines, along with the videos, it just clicked.

    @IBwantingtosleep
    I know just how you feel. About sleep. Paper thickness is based on weight. If you see my response to OrigamiJos, the cheapest printer paper has worked best for me, the colored paper. Here it's measured in pounds so I look for 20 lb paper although I've made decent spinners with a heavier 24 lb paper. I have not been able to repeat the success of the spinners you see in the video but I've come close. There are so many factors, folding, soak, etc. Keep trying!

    15 HOURS!!!! You've gotta be kidding! Before summer, I would usually let it dry over night. Now that we have 100 + temps, an hour or 2 outside with a nice hot breeze seems to do the trick. If it's fairly dry after 15 hours, I'd try letting it dry without the rubber band. Take the marble out too. You don't happen to live in a really humid climate do you? If you do, you may have a really hard time getting it to work.
