    First ever gig with F6, total newbie, the producer wanted to listen only one mic on total of 4 thru the headphone. Since I've listened almost all your videos and this one in particular I knew how to do it, so he thought I was the king LOL. THANKS for all your F6 videos. People thinks I'm a pro even if I'm not :)

    M-S means mid/side-stereo. It is a techinque used with a cardioid mic as the mid mic, pointing towards the source, while a figure-8 mic is used as capturing audio from left and right. To be played back correctly; the side channels information is phase inverted on one side. This is what the M-S setting on the F6 does. It doesn't affect the way it is recorded, but the way it is monitored and played back. Very cool to have on board.

      If you have a stereo microphobe with 3,5 Trs jack, do you need to xlr plugs or only one?

    • @semilumi
      @semilumi 3 года назад +1

      @@anyuisbjoern This type of microphone is probably not compatible with ZOOM F6 without additional pre-amp. Most microphones using 3,5mm connector are miniature electret microphones that need 3-5V plugin power to function, so you would need a device that accepts stereo mic on a 3,5mm TRS connector and supplies plugin power to the mic. These mics most often will not be compatible with XLR microphone inputs like the ones on ZOOM F6 even if used with basic adapter cables. The miprophone might even get damaged if directly connected to mic pre supplying 48V phantom power.

      @@semilumi Hey Semi,
      thank you so much for your answer!
      Hope I do understand you right? Please correct me. I try to respond to your answer.
      The Zoom F6 has the option to switch of phantom power on each microphone port, wouldn’t that work then?
      Otherwise there are adapters like the vxlr+ from røde that transform 48v to plugin power. But with a price of 24€ per piece it would cost around 50€ to plugin a stereo mic.
      I have a sony codenser mic (ECM-MS957) with 3.5 jack and stereo recording. Now I use the cheap vxlr rode connector for 9€ and switch of phantom power. it works but probably only as a mono-mic. So I ask myself if I can make it to a stereo microphone and somehow I would need to split the trs stereo mic to two xlr inputs and also make sure no 48v fry the mic.
      is this right?

    • @semilumi
      @semilumi 3 года назад +1

      @@anyuisbjoern Hello! I looked at the manual of the Sony ECM-MS957. It seems to have 5-pin XLR connector and include an adapter for 3,5mm TRS. Does your mic indeed have that? If so, you should get 5-pin XLR to dual 3-pin XLR adapter to best interface it with the F6.
      One 3-pin XLR connector means one channel on the recorder, which always means mono. So yes, two 3-pin XLR connectors and two channels for stereo use. If your mic is actually hardwired with the TRS connector, you would need TRS to dual 3-pin XLR adapter.
      According to the manual this microphone can be powered with a single AA battery. To me it even seems that you even have batteries in your mic if you get it to work without plug-in power! The battery is accesible by rotating the lower part of the mic open.
      Even if the XLR standard would suggest the microphone could accept phantom power and convert it internally, from what i read on the web is that this one doesn't. It would be safest to use the mic battery operated with phantom power switched off.

      @@semilumi Dear Semi, thank you so much for taking your time and attention to read the manual and sharing your experiences and thoughts.
      This is what I will actually do. I just ordered a cable. Not the expensive sennheiser one for around 50$ but luckily I found one for around 15€ at Thomann.

    Just watched your video again. This is a super methodology for organizing the headphone settings Makes a lot of sense. Do you happen know whether in the Zoom F6 Microphone settings when you pan left and right, whether it is a destructive process or just there for monitoring.

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  2 года назад

      I'm not sure what the pan does in those situations. Let me do some tests and I will get back to you.

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  2 года назад

      Hey, Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I did some tests and found out that the "Pan" in the PFL settings only effects the LR tracks. The headphone routing is just for your headphones and how you hear each track. When I sent the LR tracks to the corresponding sides, in "headphone Routing" and panned in the PFL settings the same thing applies. The headphone rout is it's own signal while the pan function just effects the LR signal.
      Hope this helps, some of this stuff can get confusing so let me know if you need any more help.

    Hi Justin, great video. Just a quick question, am I right in thinking that in order to send wireless audio monitoring to the director this would be through the Line out socket? And would I be able to configure the routing to the line out so that the director could listen to a mix of, say, 3 lavs? (that's actually 2 questions, thanks)

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  Год назад

      You would need a transmitter that can go to 3.5mm. Then you can do it wirelessly. After that you can route the tracks however you want. It’s very flexible with what you can send to where.
      Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

    I'm new to the F6 and have found this tutorial and your other videos very helpful for getting up to speed quickly. Thank you. Your tips on setting up the headphone settings 1-8 were great. Can you give anymore information about the MS, Pre, Post and Mono settings in the headphone routing menu? I don't fully understand their purpose. Also, if you want to hear the LR mix, do you have to toggle ports 1 to 6 plus LR or just LR? Please excuse the stupid questions

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  2 года назад +1

      Just so you know, all questions are welcome. I don't see this as a stupid one, mostly because this stuff can be tough to understand.
      So let's start off with MS setting. I will refer you to the comment by "Semi Lumi". They explained it, in more detail.
      Next "Pre" is when the signal starts before the fader. Meaning the fader will adjust the volume of your headphone volume and so will the volume wheel. "Post" just means after the fader, where the fader doesn't affect the volume of your headphones. There is a difference in sound as well, I just don't remember what the specific reason is. I will have to get back to you on that.
      Mono is basically getting a mono mix of all the monitored signals. Just play around with it. I don't really use it so just give it a try.
      Lastly, the LR signal. Those act just like any track. Just rout them to a setting and you'll be good. So you can have setting 7 as LR and that's it.
      I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I'll try my best to answer them. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Hi Justin, I'm just deciding between the F6 and F8n, is for 360º Video recording outsides. My main concerns is about that F6 only have 1 sd, what happens if SD fails? Start all again? On the other side, Is 32 bits an game changger? Thank a for you time.

    • @RebelTech1990

      Thanks for checking out the video and the Sub! I get this question a lot with gear and memory cards in general. In my experiences the failure of the card is on the card side, almost every time. That doesn't mean that it's not possible for the device itself can't have an issue. It's not probable but you can say that about a lot of things potentially failing.
      If you are deciding between the F6 and the F8n there are a bunch of differences. The F8n is a "professional" level recorder while the F6 is more so semi pro. The major thing the F6 has over the F8n is the 32 bit float. That being said, if you can set your levels and feather it as you work, then the F8n is good. The F8n also has more "professional" Ins/Outs. one more thing, obviously, you have 6 vs 8 inputs. If you are using 8 inputs, I wanna know the shoot that your on because that's crazy and I want in!
      I know it's a lot but in my mind I feel you can get the same quality from the F6 as the F8n at 2/3 of the price. Now if you need some of the plugs on the F8n then you would need to go with that one.
      Here is a good video that I watched a while back: ruclips.net/video/Ts4NMkDb8Lw/видео.html
      I spoke with him months ago when I was making the earlier F6 videos. Cool dude, great accent and knows his stuff. Also check out Curtis Judd, he a real professional. Hope this helped, let me know if you have any more questions!

      @@RebelTech1990 Thanks for your answer, I think that 6 channels are enough, 4 for ambisonic, 1 for lavaliere and...maybe a 2nd lavaliere? :D I saw both videos and think that both prefer F8n, but they are very pro, I'm in the semi-pro side. About the card, of course, usually is the card that fails, but when that happens, you have to start again and sometimes that could be difficult, but probably I'm being too cautious. Thanks again.

      @@RebelTech1990 hahaha wow you did reply. Thanks man - awesome. Really don't understand about routing re headphones and was just confused on how you discussed about it. And i am not touching anything on it for now (just got my F6 a week ago) maybe later.
      Just a question though, 32bit is really awesome but i find it a pain when downloading the files - took longer time. I am using a mac mini 2018 64Gb ram and latest protools with Apollo twin as interface. So my main use is for recording music while doing the video. Really nice F6 i could easily edit each track but yet again - too slow to download. Do you have this problem?

    • @RebelTech1990
      @RebelTech1990  3 года назад

      You are probably thinking too into it. All you gotta do is assign a track or multiple tracks to a “setting”. Also set the pre or post signal as well. There really isn’t much to it.
      Like I said in the video “settings” 1-6 are for tracks 1-6 alone. Then if I wanna hear 1 and 2 at the same time I would set that to a setting. Then it’s up to you how you wanna configure it. It’s really flexible and you can hear what every configuration you want.
      To answer your question, I never had an issue with downloading the files. Granted my files aren’t usually more than 20-30 minutes long. That shouldn’t matter because they are audio files. I have a few questions to understand what you’re dealing with:
      1) what’s your sampler rate you are recording in?
      2) What are you recording/how many tracks?
      3) Are you using and SD card or plugged in via usb to transfer the files?
      4) Have you checked your Pro Tools settings? Meaning, do they convert the files before they are added to the project? This could also be a Pro tools things they do.
      I haven’t used pro tools in almost 10 years. I find it to be annoying and counter productive. I use Studio One for audio editing. Much easier to navigate and less stress on my CPU. Logic is very good as well.
