You also forgot to mention that the PS2 version also has some oddities with the backgrounds on some stages. Some levels like Dr. Bad Boon's Base, Inside a Whale, and especially Space Colony had the backgrounds look cheaper and even unfinished that it looks unsettling. I guess SEGA had to make some cuts with the level design so it runs on the PS2.

    • @puthput

Sega clearly never make a quality port. They will screw it up somehow like make Sonic Adventure DX graphics worst be removing real time lighting, make things bright even in nighttime and make character models look like knock-off figures and make the levels less atmospheric, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle with somehow fucking up the audio in the HD ports and remove stuff that shouldn't be removed considering the GameCube, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC are way more powerful. Also Sonic Colors Ultimate is a disgrace to the game that saved Sonic by adding unneeded bloom, make Sonic emotionless, lazy AI upscaled cutscenes and make useless additions.

Thank you! This comparison was lean, to the point, and had great comparisons. I wish I had a GameCube; I'd probably play it off that. The deadzones seem like they make the game harder on the PS2, but other than that, the other downsides don't seem as bad.

Real glad you loved the vid man. I will say the negatives may be bad for some and not for others. It really depends on the person, however I'm still disappointed how much the ps2 and Xbox lack. The dead zone is bad though, a horrible kind of artificial difficulty I don't appreciate

There is a modded version of Super Monkey Ball 2 for GameCube that adds the SMB1 and Deluxe stages into the game, meaning that it is basically Deluxe for GameCube with all the stuff cut from the other versions actually restored. Dole bananas, ball rolling sounds and fixed audio (the modders made 2 versions, one with fixed and one without) and no deadzone. The downsides are that Story Mode is significantly different, with 10 stages per world, all of them being the ones that came back for Deluxe on PS2 and Xbox. Basically, Story Mode plays only SMB1 and Deluxe stages, no SMB2 stages. Though, every stage in it's entirely is in Challenge Mode. (Master is gone, but Ultimate still remains). In terms of the party games though... those were cut to make room for all the returning stages. For now, that's definitely the definitive way to play Deluxe, at least for me. Great job showing off the differences!

There was a time when I got a copy of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe for the Xbox, but I never got to play it because the disc couldn't be read by my Xbox 360 (this was back in 2009). Understandably my 7-year-old self was sad because of this. I didn't get to play the Deluxe-exclusive stages until Banana Mania came out. I did get SMB2 four years ago so there's that, but I still have yet to get the first game. Also, playing and/or hearing SMB1/SMB2 brings me nostalgia since they were the first games I ever played.

Some more flaws about the PS2 version I noticed:
The textures in the ps2 version are much more lower-rez or are scaled weirdly (like in the sky-high version of "choice" ruclips.net/video/ofyanFrf7bk/видео.html)
Many reflections on the stage in the gamecube version are missing completely in the xbox and ps2 version
The PS2 version seems to miss any lighting on the level itself in some worlds (like at 8:47, the left side of the stage in the ps2 version doesn't have any shadow while the xbox version does)
The Wormholes in the game (introduced around early expert) originally allowed you to look into the wormhole and see out the other end using a virtual camera (think portal). The PS2 version doesn't have it at all and instead just has a flashing green plane. ruclips.net/video/ofyanFrf7bk/видео.html
Many of the backgrounds in the PS2 version had a decent amount of objects in the background removed on more intensive levels. ADV EX 9 "Ufo", which removes most of the space station in the background, and ADV EX 10 "Ring Bridges" which literally removes everything but the skybox, for instance. ruclips.net/video/ofyanFrf7bk/видео.html
Advanced 10 was heavily compressed and basically completely redone between Monkey ball 1 and Deluxe, with an outside area added and incredibly glitchy collision. Also missing reflections. They probably had technical issues couldn't get it working in time, I doubt it was CPU-intensive considering that the NAOMI game in arcades could do it.
The amount of players in the monkey race mode went from 8 people in Monkey Ball 2 to just 6 people in Deluxe.
Even with the 30fps cap, some stages (like "waver") lag even more in the ps2 version, especially in widescreen mode where it hits like 10 fps.
    Overall, though, great video!

The Xbox version of Deluxe does support 480p and 16:9 widescreen, but you must have those settings enabled from the Xbox dashboard because no games on the Xbox actually feature those settings in game. It's a system wide thing. Either way, I really don't like how much of a botched port Deluxe is on both consoles, but specifically on PS2. It makes the console look horrendously weak even though I've definitely seen it pushing significantly better visuals at 480p and 60fps vs that 480i 30fps mess we ended up with. Not to mention that the stuttering between levels makes the game feel borderline unfinished.

Meanwhile for some reason I find it more realistically suitable that somehow more realistically you'd hear the subtle wobbling sound as in the ps2 vers going slow, then as your monkey attempts to break the sound barrier, things tense up as the world from their perspective starts to blur out and everything gets quiet as all eyes are on your movements of this ball as it spins at impossible rates lol

@@Kelphelp its so funny how ps2 and gamecube are so on opposite ends of the spectrum. And I always tell the story of how I should've had a gamecube as first console. always loved the mario and monkey ball combo and I wanted to mimic my fren down the street by getting monkey ball+melee back then when I first took home the gamecube, still remember the butterflies i had in the car riding home to finally bring it to my living room and never have to leave the house to play or share screen time again! But somehow i can't quite remember how devastated I was when my dad brought it back upon realizing it couldn't play dvds. LOL
I feel like im all the more better for it now, cause I couldn't imagine growing up without open world games like kh1&2 or Ty Tiger, and seeing how nintendo fanatics are on youtube these days, I think I'd rather stick to the indie gems than hope on another good mario title or have been obsessed over the various other franchises they held. ps2 just felt so much more expansive and unique. And I still came back to enjoy most of what I missed in more recent years, and I feel like Im enjoying it more now than I probably would've as a kid, not getting the various references in games like paper mario 2 and never meeting the skill requirement for sunshine (im not sure kids should even try and beat that), then there's melee...
And you know all the time still I can't help but wonder how my gaming and internet dwelling life would've been different had I grew up on the gamecube instead. Probably might've finally gotten a ds at some point too

Deluxe might be considered a bad port (I think the Xbox version is just fine), it is DEFINITELY not the worst Monkey Ball port. Super Monkey Ball for the Nokia N-Gage is a port of Super Monkey Ball Jr, which itself is a GBA "port" (i guess Demake would be the proper term) of Super Monkey Ball 1. Jr is... fine, servicable. But SMB N-Gage is genuinely atrocious, butchering the music into a 5-Second loop that sounds more like a Siivagunner Blueball rip than anything from actual Monkey Ball, controls that feel as stiff as a wooden board frozen by winter and graphics... that aren't actually too bad all things considered. SMB N-Gage is not only the worst port of SMB1, it might actually be the worst Monkey Ball game ever made.

In my life, I constantly cycle between living in Puerto Rico and Florida. When I decided to take my old PS2 to Florida, I could've chosen to take SMB Deluxe (since I own it's PS2 version and still haven't lost that disc yet), but all those whole/entire shitty lagging issues caused me to hesitate bringing SMBDX with me, because it just doesn't feel fun with such a nasty lag. Man, how I wish I ever owned an Xbox at some point in my life, I would totally prefer to play that version of SMBDX instead because it's much, much faster & smoother than that garbage PS2 version. 😐

Poor PS2, this console unfortunally don't age well, with less performance than Gamecube and Xbox.
But when you compare Monkey Ball Delux, we can see how the PS2 analogue video is so wash out, with bad color and brightness compare to his conterpart. Even the PSP is more appeling today, with the Component or with the sharpscale homebrew on a hack PS TV.
I hope the PS2Digital than PixelFX tease can add a big upgrade to the PS2 video quality, because it's sad than the best selling console ever wasn't pleasant to look out.

Monkey Ball Deluxe's PS2 port is absolutely awful and shows why the PS2 is nowhere near as good as the GameCube or the original Xbox.
Also the PS2 had so much shovelware on it, whereas the GameCube and original Xbox have little to no shovelware.
And for the most part, GameCube and original Xbox versions have way better ports that look and run a lot better than they do on PS2.
The Xbox port of Deluxe is actually really good. It plays pretty well on the 360 as well.
