Passive Infrared Sensors (PIR) are easy to use and set up. You can use them to control home automation devices including lighting, alarms and door openers. They are great for power and battery saving, making sure that lights (or anything else...) turn off when nobody is around.
In this video I show how to connect a basic circuit with just a PIR sensor, a transistor and a couple of other components to produce a reliable and power saving motion called lighting circuit - ideal for building a night light or for having a string of LEDs switch on when you are present.
PIR sensors can used with Arduino or any other microcontroller (eg Raspberry Pi) to make more sophisticated controllers and I'll cover how to do this in a second PIR video.

I have one and a raspberry pi. I hope to one day use a PIR with the pi to trigger the DPMS on a screen (used as a calendar/ digital photo frame)

Very informative and exactly what I have been looking for. The many uses of this PIR sensor are endless. I use 18650 batteries as a power source. These 18650 batteries seem to last forever. I no longer have to stumble about looking for the light switch in the middle of the night just to go to the toilet or get a drink from the fridge. My end game is to keep energy costs as low as possible. I use energy saving bulbs in my home but regardless a penny saved is a penny earned in my opinion. Thank you for sharing this video.

How do you use 18650 for this 5v sensor ? You have made a series of batteries for higher voltage or a single battery enough ?

When using the module in the video to light up an LED strip, it works, but it's much less bright than when powering the LED strip directly. I'm using the supplied 12v power supply to power it and it's super bright when powered directly but only maybe 30% of the brightness when activated by the PIR. It turns out that the 10k resistor is only allowing 7.4v to get to the LEDs when they want all 12v coming from the power supply. I jumpered the resistor and it's as bright as it is when powered directly from the psu and working great!.

I have an old mannequin type head, that I'm going to rig up in the window...It will have red or green LEDs in its eyes, triggered by a PIR when anyone gets close.

What a brilliant and understandable explanation! Electrickery becomes much clearer to my mechanical mind, thanks. Hopefully it might make a project I have in mind less of a crashing about in the dark exercise. Ideally I would like to have a 12 volt battery trickle (charged with a solar panel) powering a raspberry pi (with camera) and a 12 volt infrared illuminator controlled by a single PIR. Actuating the PIR would switch on the infrared illuminator, change the pi from standby to on and then take photos and or video. This does sound a bit optimistic, an alternative would be two separate PIRs one for the illuminator and one for the pi, though I suspect this scheme may not be ideal. This project is for security surveillance in the polytunnel on my allotment. Please can you offer any advice? Many thanks
Great video, thank you. I've just knocked one of these up using an LED strip, works great but the sensitivity control doesn't seem to have much effect. I have it turned all the way down and it works from quite a distance, even further if I turn it up. Could it be faulty or am I missing something? It looks like the ones I have (HC-SR501) are min 3m range with the lens on. I've taken the lens off with some decent results but it still triggers a bit further away than I'd like. Would it be better to look for another board that has a shorter trigger range?

Thanks for the very clear video. Is there a way I could build a similar low-power circuit to pull something to ground, rather than pull high? I was going to use a relay but obviously running that off a battery is going to use significantly more current than a transistor. Thanks!
Hi - you can do this with a chip like a ULN2003A or even a transistor.

Great video thankyou. New sub. How would one add a on/off switch to this? I checked all your other videos but can't find anything else regarding PIR's. All the other channels are a little confusing with their diagrams and are mostly for house lights and house switches.
Would I use the POS of the battery and the N of the PIR? Or would I connect to the SL?
I tried incorporating it into a musical teddy bear and got the lights and music to work but only when the switch is initially turned on and it wouldn't react with the PIR still. Not sure where I'm going wrong. The teddy PCB has a main switch and a secondary button that you press for the lights and music to start. Many thanks from Aus
Excellent video, on most schematics for pir lights they have a 220r resistors from the signal pin to base, what is the difference in performance with using 220r compared to 10k.? Thanks.
Glad you liked the video. If the resistor is too low or too high, the processor pin will be either always on or always off - for Arduino and similar processor gpio 10k is a common choice.
Hi there, great video thanks. Which relay and transistor would you recommend for a connection of the sensor to a 5amp 12v waterpump without using arduino or anything like that? With the power source being a 7amp 12v battery. I presume the 10k resistor would still be ok. Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Great video, well explained! Is it possible to use a relay rather than an LED so when motion triggers, the relay could switch a higher power device or trigger a contact closure in a 3rd party control system? If so what relay would you recommend? Many thanks
Glad you liked the video, thanks - you can trigger anything that can be switched on by a digital pin - you'll need to use something inbetween the arduino and the relay, maybe a transistor or a chip like a ULN2003A - and the choice of relay depends on the voltage and current that it is switching. I'm doing something similar soon to control my garage lights.

HI, Is there a pir that sends a signal for 1 second only when motion detected and another signal when it times out from the same output? I would like to make a simple motion detector to turn my video camera on and off. I aready have a remote controller for my camera with a spare transmitter and the one button turns the camera on and off. I could use the transister to operate a relay to short out the switch in the transmitter. Great video. Thankyou.

A nice dissertation on pirs. A question, the front door bell keeps getting missed. The idea would be to have a plastic boxed pir behind a flower pot to pick up visitors etc. A wire would run to the back of the house to ring when someone approaches with an attached buzzer or bell. The buzz time should be short say 5 seconds and then not ring again repeatedly whilst you talk to the postman or whatever. The dogs would also go hysterical if it kept buzzing. Can this be achieved simply without an Arduino or similar? No-one seems to have circuit to do this. Many thanks.
Its difficult to advise on specific projects - you may be able to make this work so I really recommend experimenting - glad to hear you enjoyed the video...

If you connect the output of the transistor to a pin of a ULN2003 the opposite pin goes to ground when it is high - or you can use a second transistor...
How would I add a light sensitive diode so only it operates at night?

Hi - I'm not familiar with the RCWL-0516, I'll follow that up, interesting - meanwhile, you can make just about anything work with a sensor and a transistor switch. If you need more voltage/current you can use it to trigger a relay or you can use it to trigger a processor board like an arduino which can in turn control all kinds of things.
