  • Yes, standing under a tree in a lightning storm is extremely dangerous. Don't do it. But, there's one place you can be that's even deadlier - out in the open. According to NOAA records, more people died from lightning strikes they received while out in the open than from any other location between 2006-2016.
    So what should you do if you're caught in a lightning storm? We spoke with John Jensenius, lightning safety specialist at NOAA, for some safety tips.

    Following is the transcript of the video:
    Where's the most dangerous place to be in a lightning storm? Under a tree is extremely risky.
    But there's an even deadlier place: outside, in the open.
    More people were struck and died by lightning out in the open than anywhere else in the US between 2006-2016. Here's a breakdown of the 5 most dangerous places to be.
    Chances are slim but you should still be prepared. Taking shelter in a car or enclosed building is always your best option if you're caught in a thunderstorm.
    But if you can't find shelter, here are some tips.
    Stuck in a forest?
    Avoid tall or isolated trees. And stand as far away as you can from any tree.
    Camping in an open area?
    Pick a valley or other low area to set up camp. Avoid ravines, and beware of possible flash flooding in the area.
    Also, remember that tents offer no protection from lightning.
    Avoid wet and metal objects.
    If you're in a boat or near long metal fences be extremely careful. Water and metal easily conduct electrical current from one source to another, which could be you.
    Always wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder.
    50% of lightning deaths happen after the storm has passed. So, be patient and wait a half hour before resuming activity.
    These tips can help, but your best defense is to plan ahead. Check the weather forecast before going out. It could just save your life.

    So if you are outdoors camping and nowhere close to a building or car, you can't go near a tree, in your tent or out in the open... then where else are you supposed to freaking go???

    • @dracibatic2433

      lie on the grass in a dense area... or out in the open...
      as far as i can tell. lying down would be much safer, and the out in the open death statistics are fucking stupid, for varying reasons... specifically, out in the open applies to more space than any other area. and second. if you're lying down, lightning would almost never hit you

    • @zockertwins
      @zockertwins 7 лет назад +61

      You should not lie down, because it increases your chance of dying to a lightning that strikes close to you.
      When a lighning hits the ground, the electricity spreads out in a circle around the point it it.
      The ground has a resistance that reduces the electricity the further you go from the starting point.
      If you are lying down, your feet might be closer to the lightning and therefore be in a stronger electric field than your head. This potential difference induces a current through you that can certainly harm or kill you.
      Instead, you should crouch down with your feet very close to each other, but still remain lower than the objects sorrounding you.
      That is also why it's so dangerous to be on horseback while in a thunderstorm.

    I was on top of a mountain when the thunderstorm started... the only thing I could do was walk and pray. Closest shelter was 4-5km away and the only way to get there was to walk the mountain crest for an hour before starting to descend. 100% 0 cover, I saw lightning at eye level. Time from the flash to the thunder was under 2 seconds, terrifying experience.
    The forecast was light rain for an hour or 2.

    Another tip: If you can't find shelter and are still out in the open, crouch in a ball. This will give the electricity from the lightning bolt less time to pass through your body, but if you are standing straight, it will stay in your body longer, which gives you a higher chance of worse injury, burns, or death.

    Hay you forgot about -: you shouldn't use a landline phone during a lightning storm. And though it is kinda rare sometimes, lightning can travel through electrical wiring in your house and arc out from electrical devices such as TV's , stereo's, microwave ovens etc and even travel through your water pipes🌩⚡️

    • @luisgonzalez5482
      @luisgonzalez5482 7 лет назад

      That can't exactly happen considering houses have things called circuit breakers and those cut off current if it's overloaded.
      My mom says that ALWAYS yet nothing has ever happened to her or anyone I know or us.

    • @6Fiona6_P_6
      @6Fiona6_P_6 7 лет назад +1

      Phantom Dancer you're lucky to live in a house that does have circuit breakers. But there are many old houses and buildings that don't have them. They have the old Fuse Panels. And still even if you do have circuit breaker, lightning can still surprise you. Say by coming through a window. So it's always better to be safe, rather than be sorry ⛈⚡️🌩

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 лет назад +2

      Circuit breakers protect appliances from moderate electrical surges caused by distant lightning strikes or transformer malfunctions. They don't offer any protection from a direct lightning strike. If the voltage is high enough for charge to travel directly through the air, the lightning can easily jump past a circuit breaker.

  • @huyzombiev4614

    The best way to avoid getting struck by lightnings is that You should check the weather forecast regularly, do not risk your life going somewhere outside without knowing clearly what the weather on that day is like .
    I used to be in the open , exactly in the middle of the very large field, of course, i had nowhere to avoid the weather. Moreover, there were only a few bushes of shampoo around me , i had no choices but to kept staying in the middle of field and stand as far away as possible from the nearest bush. Fortunately, i was still alive after that terrible kind of experience. I guess, god did help me to get over this worst situation.

    How could 50% of lightning deaths occur after a storm has passed? Maybe bolts that travelled backward compared to the direction the wind was pushing the storm? Seems high.
    Wait 30 minutes after last rumble of thunder...or what? You'll get a cramp?
    Your chance is 1 in 10.5 million of being killed(?) by lightning... THAT stat needs details. Like "If you are in an exposed position during a lightning storm and you take shelter under a tree, you have a 1 in 10.5 million chance of being hit (or killed?) by lightning."
    That incidence rate would change based on where you are, how long the storm lasts, severity of the storm... As it stands it's just "big number big number".
    How did they get that stat? "We polled 10.5 million people who stood under trees in a storm. (Never mind one tree, forest of trees, tall or short tree, how long storm lasted). And only one of them responded "it killed me. It literally killed me." ???

    • @DanielRafacz
      @DanielRafacz 7 лет назад

      350 people died from lightning between 2006-2016. That averages to 31.8 people per year over the 11 year period. With approximately 325 million people living in the United States, roughly 1 in 10.5 million (with rounding) are killed by lightning annually, thus the probability presented in the video.

    • @brucebaker810
      @brucebaker810 7 лет назад

      Hi +Daniel Rafacz Those numbers may well be true. But that says nothing in relation to my OP. How many of them WERE getting rained on (ie the clouds were above them) and how many were just damp (cuz the storm had already passed by)?
      --- Hmm...that neglects the "had umbrellas" cohort.
      But you get the idea.
      As Kesey might have said, if he were a meteorologist:
      "You're either IN the storm or OUT of the storm
      (when you got zapped by 50 gazillion ampojoules)"
      And my guessulation: WAY more were wet than damp. So the "50% were only damp" statistic...is high.

    Did you know that I was struck by lightning seven times?
    1)Once when I was repairing a leak on the roof.
    2)Once I was just crossing the road to get the mail.
    3)Once, I was walking my dog down the road.
    4)Once when I was just sittin' in my truck just minding my own business:
    5)Once when I was in the field, just tending to my cows:
    6)?
    7)?
    God keeps reminding me I'm lucky to be alive.

      A /Short/ tree.
      Chance of getting hit by lightning: higher
      Chance of getting wet: less.
      But your chance of death (under tree) is, apparently, millions to one.
      Your chance of being wet & uncomfortable (out in open): 100%
