I note you get right up to the top fret occasionally and it sounds completely in tune - do you set up your own basses or have a luthier? I just don't seem to be able to adjust mine so they are 100% all over the neck? And they are not cheap basses either! Rickenbacker, Precision.
There won't be isolated tracks, because bands at that time were recording the instrumental of the songs on a single track, with all instruments in it. Then the vocal was recorded over that instrumental. As for the playing - first I tab the bass by ear on guitar pro and then learn to play it. I try to be as close as I can to the original recording. It's very good exercise for my ears :)

The bass I'm using is quite old and out of tune actually. It just blends really nice with the mix of the song. Never had a luthier.
