    How about instead of giving women strong roles already played by men, we give women strong female roles which were written for women??

      both? I think something to think about is that if it is a really well written character, the gender of said character dose not really matter. That being said, i am certainly all for better written origonal female characters!

      How about instead of giving women strong roles in movies we give women strong roles in real life?
      Roles which offer danger, risk, violence, injury and death. Roles which we currently only give to men, which is why 95% of workplace deaths are men. Basically, roles which are naturally exciting to watch when re-enacted in movies.
      Then we can make movies about these real life women, and we can enjoy watching female actresses pretend to be real women doing dangerous risky stuff and probably getting injured or killed along the way, like a man.
      At the moment we have female actresses pretending to be women who do not really exist in real life.
      Or alternatively... we could carry on pushing men into all of those dangerous jobs, while letting women do jobs in environments which are as safe and comfortable as the kitchen (such as the modern office environment) .... but in movies we can still demand 'gender equality' and 'equal representation', even though we demand the opposite in real life. Have cake and eat it! :)

    We're probably going to disagree which is fine, but considering the lack of representation in film I'd say replacing a male cast with a female cast is enough of a change for a reboot. I can see the problems with having made it a reboot instead of a sequel (breaking the fourth wall in a bad way, etc.), but it doesn't really bother me, and I like that this squad of Ghostbusters formed on their own accord instead of through some kind of familial tie to the business. (But I'm not disagreeing that bigger character arcs would make it better. I'm just tired of female stories tied to family.)
    I agree with you that I want to see a group of characters like this, a great group of female actresses like this, in other stories. Please, give me anything! It's unfortunate, like you said, that they were set up for failure by being put in a Ghostbusters reboot, but since it's already done and made, I really want to support this film. Because I don't have much of a reason not to.

    • @hauntedburgerplant
      @hauntedburgerplant 8 лет назад +10

      Ran out of space in my first comment -- just want to add (and this observation isn't necessarily directed at you, I just feel safe saying this here since you're not a whiny pissbaby man complaining about the women), but a lot of people who enjoyed the original Ghostbusters saw it when they were young, when they were still in the absorption stage and not yet in the critical-thinking stage. This Ghostbusters wasn't great, but... neither was the first one....
      Anyway, thank you for the well thought out video. It was a refreshing change from all the blind rage.

      Well said. A lot of the points Hazel made were misguided or lifted off of several articles I've read about the movie. Hopefully she can provide her own thoughts, I don't like her take on how the movie should have been: when you make a big movie you expect lots of eyes on the screen. Making a sequel alienates a good part of the audience who frankly does not care for the original.

    I personally thought it was really funny and well done and replacing the characters with females gave girls a strong female lead and I can't see how that can be a bad thing and it was a wonderful film

    • @thorne3677
      @thorne3677 8 лет назад +10

      I don't think it was done just to have a female lead it's a good film and gives it a modern twist

    • @20thCenturyMeerkat
      @20thCenturyMeerkat 8 лет назад +25

      I have no issue with female characters but the film tried too hard to be like 'yeah only girls are competant fuck men' to the level of being obnoxious. It's like an artist who's like 'I tried this new style, all other styles suck, you are all scum'. A mixed cast would be better.
      Also the film didn't need to be made. it wasn't a continuation of the story, it was a reboot to make more money. the original Ghostbusters is still there, it's not like the film has to be recreated from scratch because it was 'lost'. Hollywood needs more new ideas and this system of working on nostalgia as a cash cow is toxic and stifles any originality in Western film-making.
      If you found the film good though, that's fine! I respect your view. I just politely disagree.

      Imho it's humor fell very flat, and was filled with boring jokes. It was a remake that didn't need to be done. I'm just tired with all the remakes of movies that were already good. When Hollywood remakes a crappy movie with a cool storyline, I'll be happy.

    i think you're thinking about the film too much from an artistic perspective. which in itself isn't a problem, but it's worth baring in mind that i think a big part of why this movie was made is representation. which in some cases does justify a reboot. having female ghostbusters has given young girls a new brand of role models and they obviously really enjoy it. movies are art. and when something is art, it has cultural impact and significance. since this is a factor, you have to take into consideration how this piece of art affects society generally.

      eviemay i guess i used the term artistic to best describe where my thoughts were in terms of hazel over-prioritising cinematic quality and literal artistry and all that. which i would agree are highly important elements of film, it's just being the social justice-y person that i am, think that creating a movie for social equality reasons is a good reason to do so. of course ideally a film will have both artistry and fair representation and positive ideals, and i am a huge appreciator of artistic film, i just think that with ghostbusters specifically, there was a clear goal with that film, and i'm a fan of that goal. i hope i'm making any sense lmao

      They could have just done something totally original. This would have been even better because the film would stand alone, and not get the backlash from being associated to an already established brand and rebooting a beloved classic that did not need a total reboot or reimagining whatsoever.
      The new generation this seems to be intended for is not really familiar with it anyway. It is clear the only reason they went with the ghostbusters name was just to make money of the people that are familiar with the original, but it totally backfired with its fake and try to hard attempt of reaching nostalgia.

    • @sherman128
      @sherman128 8 лет назад +17

      As I said, I have no problem with a Black Spiderman. Miles Morales is Hispanic and he's a fantastic Spiderman. I just don't like changing core elements of any old character like that. This isn't a racist thing please please don't think that that I can't stress that enough, I think it'd be just as bad if they Made Miles Morales white. The Superhero (Spiderman, Iron Man etc.) themselves can be be any race or even Gender under the mask (With exception of probably Black Panther, you can't have a white guy as Black Panther because he has to be an African King) but the characters themselves, Parker/Morales/Steve Rogers, should stay as they were first written in terms of core elements. Personality can change, certain aspects of the look can change, but for me I just don't think anything else should be.
      PS. Please Please don't take this as me being racist, That's really truly not where this comes from :)

    • @beethreefour
      @beethreefour 8 лет назад +12

      I agree with a lot of what you said here, there wasn't much need for a Ghostbusters reboot. I feel the movie execs knew that they would get a lot of money from remaking it with a female cast and be able to get away with not really making it that unique, as we as a society are very hard done by on the aspect of strong female leads. I also personally was put off by the woman of colour (not sure of her name) who, in the trailer at least, seemed to take on the stereotypical role of "independent sassy black woman".

    • @TheHazelHayes
      @TheHazelHayes  8 лет назад +25

      Firstly, thank you. I'll try to look like I mean business more often :) And secondly, I totally agree. It would have been a whole other topic to add to an already long video but the racial stereotype wasn't great. I'd have much preferred to see her as one of the scientists instead of the "street smart black woman". That said, she played the character brilliantly and was hilarious throughout.

  • @FrancescaGeorgiou
    @FrancescaGeorgiou 8 лет назад +5

    I think one character being the daughter of a ghostbuster would work, but I think two would just be silly, just because it would lend to the idea that the scientists were only influenced by men/emotional connection to become scientists. I think the original ghostbusters could hold auditions or interviews to find a new team maybe? But yeah, I get your points

  • @heathert9900

    i honestly really enjoyed it. i went in very sceptical, and as a massive fan of the old one, i know it backwards and forwards, and i honestly do not understand all the hate it's getting. i will admit that it wasn't 100% necessary, but it was pretty good? the acting was good, they definitely cast the right actors for the reboot. i didn't love all the cameos and some of it was a little dull, and it sure is different but the hate seriously isn't necessary. the special effects were good with the same old school touch as the original, and there were some casual nods to some iconic scenes (like the tablecloth) and as a reboot, it's not terrible. im still a bigger fan of the original movie and original theme song but it definitely wasn't absolutely shit.

    There's also the fact that they abandon their own movie logic. "We have to capture ghosts" and then they start shooting, punching, and stabbing them like that makes sense? You broke your own rule!

    • @cheqers_
      @cheqers_ 8 лет назад +3

      Also I think Bill and co would regret handing over the mantle the moment they shoot the final ghost in the dick out of some dumb articulation of "yeah women!" that permeates throughout and does more harm than good.

    • @RunDoubleRun
      @RunDoubleRun 8 лет назад +5

      First point: there's no contradiction. They use the proton packs and traps to capture ghosts, they use the sidearms to destroy them. Different weapons with different properties. You can think it's stupid, but it's not inconsistent.
      Second point: It wasn't sexist. It was a guy getting hit in the balls joke. It was immature and not that funny, but it wasn't some attack on masculinity. It was a dumb joke about being hit in the balls.

    • @rocketcon
      @rocketcon 8 лет назад +4

      +RunDoubleRun It is inconsistent, or at least poorly explained. They introduce technology that is specifically designed to capture ghosts and then break that rule later on. Plus they shouldn't be able to kill ghosts since they're already dead! The main reason the new film is seen as non-progressive and sexist is because all the men in this movie are awful characters, which is such a shame as the 1984 movie had great male and female characters.

    • @Zukooooooooo
      @Zukooooooooo 8 лет назад +1

      they had to capture them at first to STUDY them and gain credibility as scientists, but had to kill them later to SAVE the CITY. honestly its not that hard to understand

    • @Yobachi2007
      @Yobachi2007 8 лет назад +3

      Exactly. It's one thing when you have to suspend disbelief to go along with a movie, but when that movie steps on it's own premises, it leaves that world with no gravity; so to speak. It was established from the beginning that the proton lasers only hold ghost in place; but they're in this movie shooting ghost like it's Stawar's lasers, and turning the phasers to blast, and blowing ghost away like it's Star Trek. The movie is supposed to make jokes, not be a joke.

  • @PlueBurple
    @PlueBurple 8 лет назад +6

    I think there is something very valuable about rebooting the film with all women. It was amazing, I had never really seen women portrayed the way they were. They were the creators- no ties to men that had done it first or carrying a legacy or anything. And I understand it could have been almost as empowering while maintaining continuity, but I value having the women be the pioneers, the ones that were nay-sayed and met with hate and fear and people who doubted them their whole lives. The character arcs were simple but I thought they were important and powerful- Kristen Wiig's character learns to stop pushing away what she loves and values for the sake of other people's approval, true friendship wins, and they get to help people and make the world better (like Leslie's character and how much you can see she wants to spread happiness and good will in the beginning, and despite her fear of the supernatural and not being a scientist, she joins them in saving the world). Overall I fell in love with it and I know it wasn't cinematically brilliant but it had heart and it was so inspiring to see these women of different shapes and sizes, not sexualized, and allowed to be all these things I hadn't ever really seen women be in hollywood be.

The original cast didn't want to do anything more than a cameo, and even then Bill Murray didn't agree to do it until they were doing reshoots. After the first trailer premiered, apparently a massive amount of things were changed causing a huge amount of upheaval overall with the film. I completely agree with the plot holes, and that the ending is a bit of a mess. It seemed liked it lacked the heart of the original. I believe that Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig have expressed interest in writing a sequel, which I think would work amazingly! I'd love to see some more film reviews as well! 💕

    I liked it. I liked that it took the ideas of the original and made it their own. It was funny, women were portrayed as smart and they kicked ass. In the end, it's a movie. And a summer comedy at that. It's for fun. I don't go see movies like Ghostbusters and think it's going to change the world. It's not Schindler's List. I also enjoy reboots. Gives good characters/stories a way to 'upgrade' things like effects and bring it to a new generation. TMNT are back and no one threw a fit about that.

    I like your ideas, and I can see what you're saying, but the problem with making them daughters is that then instead of them being somebody, they become somebody's ( as in somebody's mother, or daughter, or sister, or girlfriend, or wife ) and then the attention will go back to the other person. Perhaps they should have rebooted an entirely different film instead, so that we didn't have the issue of strange plot holes, or just poorly done films. I'm still glad that the movie was done despite this, because it's about damn time we tried to show some representation. Interesting ideas though, I can understand where you're coming from.

      No, you can be someone's daughter without becoming less than your parent. In this case the parents were crackpots, so you do not have to make such a stretch to make the daughters better than the parents.
      What you cannot do is make this film about feminism and then fail to give the women a decent script. Most people who liked the film saw it as a remake of Bridesmaids, so I will not even try to make my own opinion about it. If I ever decide to put my money in the box office, it will be to watch Bridesmaids.

    The problem I have with this movie is not that they replaced all the men with women but that they did this for NO GOOD REASON. The hype and therefor the movie became all about them being women and not about any kind of a story or anything else. It was like putting these actresses under a glass cage and charging admission to come see the freak-show about "women who think they can be ghostbusters". I felt pretty sickened by the whole process of this movie and it's pre-release hype.

    This is such a good video! I completely agree with your opinions and your idea sounds so much better haha. I was expecting more from the Ghostbusters reboot but I don't think it offered much. There wasn't much depth for it as a female reboot, it was simple and they needed to flesh it out more! I mean I still enjoyed it, because it was a fun film, but not as much as others seem to have. The actresses are amazing, so I definitely think it's down to the writing/directing.... it's not the women that are the issue. It's definitely the general filmmaking!

I just feel like if they'd done it with this reboot it would've been to subdue the pissbaby "you've ruined my childhood" men and I'd rather they be upset by an all female cast than only liking them because of their relation to the old cast/characters

    I can only assume they rebooted Ghostbusters in the way they did for people like me. Teenagers who are starting to get into film but have never seen the originals, so it makes more sense for me to see them start from the beginning again rather than carry on from something I never saw. They had cameos in the film from the original cast just as a nod to those who had seen the originals, but ultimately I think their intention was just to restart the films again for a modern audience - one to whom a main cast of women is a strong selling point for a film they're otherwise only vaguely aware of.

  • @Lilyboxes
    @Lilyboxes 8 лет назад +4

    I definitely think your sequel idea is brilliant, but I think the remake was more about showing women can make their own team without needing men, it's kind of basic in terms of feminism but still, I think that's what they were going for, rather than men showing women what to do. As for the film itself, I haven't seen it so can't comment on the content.

However your idea about it being a sequel relating to the original film is really good but then I'm sure people would find something wrong with that film. The only thing I didn't quite get is when you said when you saw the cameos you were pulled out of the film. Actors play different characters in loads of films so does that mean every time you see Bill Murray in a film you think of Ghostbusters?

    (ok preface i love u and ur videos and this is in no way meant to be demeaning/belittling of that)
    you brought up episode VII of star wars which was definitely a really good movie with a really smart plan to diversify the star wars universe without infringing upon the canon of the original movies. however, i think that actually only worked out successfully because of the prevalence of star wars long after they stopped making movies. the original trilogy was radically well-known, but it also spawned an entirely new trilogy, comics, multiple spinoff TV series, and overall the development of a very popular and very prevalent star wars universe. enough people from different generations are now aware of what was canon in the original trilogy and the prequels. that same familiarity just simply didn’t happen with the ghostbusters franchise. the first film was definitely a classic, and both films were popular enough to garner a significant following that is still loyal to this day. to simply make another movie in the same universe just wouldn’t do as well, because not nearly enough people are as dedicated to or interested in the original films enough to understand the nuances of plot details that would borrow from the older movies. the plot you mentioned in your video is really fun! and it’s great and it introduces the idea of all female ghostbusters really well! but i think there’s a tiny bit of a problem with making the characters the daughters of the old ghostbusters because it takes away from the idea that women can do this on their own without having to have grown up in the shadow of men. that isn’t really brought up in the new movie necessarily, but it’s important. i disagree that the sentimentality/familiarity of handing over the mantle is as important as you bring up that it is; i feel like it takes away from the fact that these are real female characters who are perfectly capable of functioning without the wisdom/guidance of Male Men who have done all this before. and again, it works in the star wars universe because enough of the audience knows the original story, and that simply doesn’t apply to as many people with the ghostbusters franchise. the element of nostalgia doesn’t work on a blockbuster level for a movie like ghostbusters 2016 simply because this movie is made to make money. it’s an unfortunate fact, but it is relevant. because they made a movie that doesn’t rely on the characters or plot of the old movies, they’re able to truly reintroduce the franchise to an entirely new generation in the hopes of replicating the familiarity that already exists in the star wars universe (albeit on a smaller scale).
    wow this is long thanks for reading if u did

    I think rebooting classic movies but with female leads is a cheap way of compensating for all the sexism that's been in the film industry for generations. People should just accept the fact that there's been a lack of female leads in movies for generations and just move forward, making more films with female leads that have a fresh, new, original plot. Ghostbusters and many other movies didn't have a female leads, but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to reboot a franchise and make it less sexist. Just make new franchises in the future that have strong female characters more frequently in lead positions. Then you get new movies and less sexism. It's a win win situation.

  • @itschansey
    @itschansey 8 лет назад +5

    OK. I'm glad this was brought up.
    Other than the fact that this was an unnecessary reboot, I would like to come at this from another perspective. The WOC perspective - don't like it. don't read it. I don't intend to be butthurt and i'm trying to state this as objectively as I can from a perspective of a women of colour but ey.
    The idea of women being the only main roles in a movie is refreshing however, this movie has easily forgotten about every other woman other than the white woman.
    NOW BEFORE YOU START WITH THE "THERE'S A BLACK WOMAN IN THE CAST" SHIT. She wasn't even given the status of a scientist because god forbid right? She was a loudmouthed, street savvy black woman who bursts onto the scene because why stray from them stereotype right? If I had children, why would I want them to see this film and feel that they can be nothing but the comedic relief? Why can't they be a scientist? THEN THERE'S THE FACT that there are no other women from other races/cultures - none from the orient culture or the asian culture - NOTHING and why? because this was an excuse not to push up all women but to push up white women and not only that, but white women who are already rather established in the industry.
    I'm trying to be objective and i'd love to hear anyone elses views on this but that's just how i feel in addition to the points that Hazel has pointed out.
    have a splendid evenin'.

      I for one appreciate the insight so thank you. I'm a middle-aged white guy but I love the chance to get multiple view points from multiple diverse people.
      My thoughts on the subject are summed up like this; I hope for the day that we can see (in media) good, strong, smart, etc. characters/role-models who also just happen to be women or just happen to be black, or Muslim, or fill-in-the-blank.
      I am happy that we are seeing more and more diverse people in major roles I just think that the idea of leading with the fact that they are diverse undermines the whole goal/point of their diversity. I dream of the day that humanity no longer needs the label of "minority" and that all people are just accepted as being wonderfully different, diverse, and unique and that those differences and uniqueness are just naturally accepted as being a part of being human.
      I hope that made some kind of sense (it's still early where I'm at).

    I rewatched the original Ghostbusters after seeing the new one, and the new one is much better and more polished and smooth in terms of effects (obviously) but also in cohesive storyline. I think creators can create/redo/reboot whatever they want and if both are good they will be able to both stand as important parts of the culture.
    Also, I think that it was great that new Ghostbusters had the interactions with the mayor and people treating them like "ghost girls" because how the original movie had the whole city fawning over the Ghostbusters was a bit too hard to suspend disbelief and accept fully. Also, the interaction of modern technology with the ghosts and the women's lives was great new territory to explore.
    TLDR: Totally disagree with you, but hey, that's what makes the world great.

    Hazel I thought this was a very well thought out video and it made so many great points, I am curious about your opinion on an idea I had. It seems really often in film, male actors/directors/writers get the opportunities to make truly horrible films simply because of who they are. They are 'insert famous name', so their projects are greenlit, and if the film fails, those men tend to not have that stigma of a 'bad film' follow them throughout their career. Whereas here, I feel like these women also had the opportunity to make something simply because of their fame/prestige, regardless of if the film was a great idea or not. For me I think they should have the same right to fail? Let the film fail if it's going to fail, but they shouldn't be receiving the backlash that they are because it feels like so much of it is just because they are women. I hope that makes sense, I'd love to hear your opinion.

    How you could so easily makeup and figure out how a successful film would work out really shows how talented you are, thank you Hazel for allowing us to really see your talent 💕
