Chopping Away Frozen Culvert Pipe Flooding The Road

  • I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
    I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
    Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Everyone knows this is a plastic Culvert right? The people mentioning a drill bit have the right idea but you cannot use any type of fire near a plastic culvert or any culverts, it will even damaged concrete and steel. This ice damn likely goes in at least four feet

    • @Sintesi.
      @Sintesi. 2 года назад +23

      so get a 1 inch bit that is 5 feet long and use a low rpm battery drill to go through the center of the plug. pretty sure the ice will keep the drill bit nice and cool at lets say 900 rpm. and if it starts getting to hot, slow down or stop drilling. you could probably make your own drill bits using rebar and a lathe or even an angle grinder.

    I’ve been watching since waaay back when all we saw was your hands, feet and rake. Then one day a very short glimpse of your face. Then you let us see you and it seemed you trusted us. Now we see ghost. I’m so happy you found a kindred spirit and so thankful someone’s got your back. Felt nervous in the early times that something horrible could happen to you all by yourself. I know we’ve seen glimpses of ghost before, but this rocks! I don’t know if things will go this way but little postlets and ghostlets would be so cute. Great video! I wonder if a cutter mattock would be a good all-round tool for you. On my property, I have a swamp that I must unclog of leaves and drain into a creek annually, so I have a good bit of experience with this kind of thing. The mattock could replace the rake in situations where you need to move a lot of material, and where the rake will not fit. The cutter is longer than an axe blade (usually) and would be good for accessing ice dams deep in culverts and cutting roots and mats of grass.

  • @TheSamuraieater
    @TheSamuraieater 2 года назад +34

    One thing you can try for the ice dams instead of an auger is get a piece of rebar and an bolt induction heater. Hit the rebar into the ice and use the induction heater to heat up the rebar to melt the ice. A commercial one like the use in auto shops can cost $150-600 depending on the brand but you can make one for about $50 if you can do the work yourself. Of course for it to work you'd need at least a small generator or power inverter for you vehicle.

    • @namibjDerEchte
      @namibjDerEchte 2 года назад +2

      No need for an induction heater, even: a simple heating coil to clamp on, if not even the rebar itself, can be hooked directly to the battery.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 2 года назад +4

      I would personally avoid electric heaters near water, they are definitely capable of sourcing enough current to kill you. (At a bare minimum have a GFCI breaker/receptacle powering it)
      A simple propane blowtorch would probably suffice and be a hell of a lot safer for the operator in water. (And for melting a long thin hole heat up the end of a peice of rebar and then plunge it into the culvert slowly, repeat as needed)

    Hi, I like your videos on your work, which reminds me of good memories when, too, I did it in the States, a long time ago. Also, you worry by dint of seeing you work without gloves in water, because of rheumatism that this causes after each day that I spent in the water. Also, I advise you to put goose or duck fat on your hands on sensitive joints, on the hands and fingers and finally on the feet. It keeps hot but that will relieve you a lot of rheumatism, been as winters. With hands for hands. Finally ... that's what I was doing. I don't know if these little things are still used. But it is very effective. In any case, for this video, you are not afraid to get stuck in the ice. It freezes quickly, especially at night. Me no one, I almost lost my legs by doing this. Well, I must say that I worked alone too. Good luck to you ^^ (sorry if it's badly translated, but google translation is my friend)

      Google translate worked pretty well whatever language you came from (G.Trans is a friend, here, too, for me...) Post10 has said in past videos that he 'works hot' (he is just a body-warm person almost all the time...) and so he puts less clothes on; sometimes works without gloves, when the rest of us would all be wanting MORE protection etc. We have to take his word on that!

    something you could do to help speed up the thawing of these pipes is to reveal the black pipe to the sky. Black absorbs heat from the sun, even in winter and that heat will thaw the ice quicker

    Years ago, we lived in a small town north of Toronto. There were no sidewalks in our subdivision, just storm ditches. Every Spring the town works department would come around with a "steam jenny" pulled by a pickup truck to melt the ice in the culverts at the end of everyone's driveway. Know how much fun it is playing in the water.

    A breaker bar/ straight crowbar (i don't know the actual term) would really help you in situations like this. It's heavy and straight with a tip, so you just smash through ice. Really popular ice breaking tool in Scandinavia

      Or a dolly bar that they used to use on the railroads.

      or just a nail shaped straight pick to puncture holes in the ice, and a hammer on the other side to smash it after, i forgot what those are called

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 2 года назад +1

      I think breaker bar is most accurate but i call anything in that class of tools a crowbar, i don't care if its 1ft long or 5, it removes nails and works as a lever so its a crowbar.

    When I was a landscaper we had a long pry bar with a pointed end on it for loosing rocks when digging holes. Maybe something like that could punch a hole through that ice. But it might be too much work.

    For the water depth problem: you might want to get yourself some fishermen pants. Those are boots, that end up in full pants (you can get them even as dungarees) and are waterproof up to the top line

    maybe a battery powered roto hammer would be safer than an axe..use a long bit to go inside the culvert.. another thing that may help, is expose more of the black culvert, the sun light will heat it up a bit more. it might help. great video, thanks for sharing

    I watch a lot of your videos, it’s good to see you out there keepin the local government accountable and showing people they can fix the infrastructure in their own town.
    BUT you’re gonna hurt yourself swinging an axe in the fashion. Huge strain on your lower back. Choke up with your dominant hand and slide it down the shaft on the downswing and see if you can get more power and ease your back.
    Thanks for all your knowledge sharing.

    What could be more fun? Chopping ice to find a culvert on a lonely country road under cover of darkness, icy water seeping into your boots, using an pickax on the ice to take out your frustrations, knowing you will be going home to a warm house/bed/bath, and enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done. What did I miss?
