Ive had an OG OP-1 for a couple of years now, and still don't really click with it. It's definitely fun, and unique, but I struggle a bit with the tape workflow. I find it pretty frustrating at times! I do think the OP-XY would be more to my liking, but there is absolutely no way I can justify the price! I'll be interested to see what you think of the OP-Z!
I'm so glad I subscribed. All your videos are informative and full of joy! Have fun with that new lens. Those fixed focal length, wide aperture prime lenses are awesome! 📷
I usually listen to the videos through the built-in speakers on the Mac Book Pro, and the sound quality is completely sufficient. I only connect the studio monitors or headphones for audio, but not always. So don't worry about the sound quality. Yes, great equipment, I'm excited to see what you can do with it. Thanks for the videos here.
Great video. I have OP-1F (upgraded from my original OP-1), OPz and OP-xy. Tried to love the OP-1F but the sounds always felt sub-standard and the tape-based workflow never clicked with me. OPz is awesome, but no screen makes it hard to keep track of everything you have that’s going on. Super fun though. OP-xy is totally different from OP-1/OP-1F. The Brain, Maestro, Punch-in FX and step-sequence workflow (vs tape-based) makes all the difference for me. If you get a chance try it as it’s a game changer for me. It plays my Modular’s and modern synths and iPad based synths and is the most inspiring thing I have added to the studio in a while from the standpoint of getting new ideas from the random and generative tools. Plus it sounds amazing.
Nice Pickups, Woody! Did you know, that the OP-1 (and Op-Z) supports Audio over USB? If you use it directly as a Audio-Interface in your DAW, the Soundquality seem way better than the internal Speaker, or even the Line/Headphone-Out... Have a happy Christmas-Time!
ye[ that is a cool feature indeed. you can even sample direct over usb, and the opz functions as a usb host, meaning you can connect usb keyboards end even audio interfaces!
Hi Woody, I can understand your voice really well, always did. I am curious to see your video on the OP 1, and the Yamaha Montage M. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!
I got an OP-Z for $275 used with the midi module and case. It’s a little warped but they do that. Really fun paired with my OP-1 that I snagged for $500 used. I’m also a photographer nice lenses as well, what brand camera do you shoot with? The portability of TE stuff is great. Get the midi/line in module for your OP-Z and keep watching videos they’ll grow on you for inspiration.
Had a couple of OP-1’s, sold the first one because I thought the workflow was weird but missed it, bought another one then sold it because it wasn’t getting used. I generally like TE gear but the prices are not justifiable if you don’t use them. However I did get the KO 2 and it’s an absolute keeper, if I see an OPZ at the right price I might have to get it to compliment it lol
I also bought an op1 back in the UK when they were about £600 it was good but limited and only mono. Eventually I sold it when they were discontinued and got a synthstrom deluge which you really should try woody. Since then the deluge has gone from strength to strength with the community firmware. I really like you videos keep at it.
I had one. My biggest gripe was it was smaller than expected and as a result the text next to the buttons used for navigating menus was too small to read easily for me. Needed to be about 33% bigger.
Recently got the OP-Z at TEs garage sale in Stockholm. So impressed by the design, workflow and sound. Great fun. Makes me wanna get op xy. Where did u read opz is 80% an opxy 😂
garage sale that sounds cool, op-xy for 200 bucks? tell me more! i figured out 80% myself by doind research based on specs and features, not an exact numher ;)
Hi Woody! Oh, a Yamaha Montage M6 in the shack, eh? Congrats!! Personally however, I am more interested in learning what they have in store for as a successor to the absolutely wonderful MODX because that, IMHO, is one of the highest value workstations in many years. When you did a comparison of its best piano sounds with - what was it, Pianoteq? - the MODX was just as good, if not better. I can’t imagine how they can improve upon the MODX but a glimpse into the new Montage M might tell us something so I am looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to your review of the newest Roland Go Keys. I don’t know if you know this but there are many, many musicians out there who still think it was Roland - Not Korg or Yamaha - who made the best arrangers. My first keyboard was a Roland GW-8E which I foolishly sold and still miss dearly even though I own a PSR-SX900 now. It seems to me, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t know much about keyboard instruments, that Roland placed great emphasis on pianos, synths/pads and guitars, particularly electric/modelled ones. The GW-8E was the last in a long line of arrangers and had a sound engine of a Fantom-G, surpassing the concurrent Fantom-X, but also many sounds from the Sonic Cell module. Anyway, I don’t want to get all sentimental here but here is a thought - if Go Keys ‘goes’ well and reviewers and customers like it, perhaps Roland will consider coming out with ‘full-size’, as it were, arrangers as direct competitors to the established Korg PA and Yamaha PSR lineups and quite frankly, we could all use more arrangers to choose from and lower prices too. Cheers, man! Tunka
thanks for the comment, and you know, my first arranger was the roland RA-50! google that :). it was great, and earned me a lot of money using it solo gigs, and with duos/trios!
@@WoodyPianoShack Oh, the RA-50 is a module!! I can see some MIDI IN/OUT ports on the back so I'm guessing you could turn any keyboard with a MIDI OUT into an arranger? Very cool! These are exciting things and I am really looking forward to your review of the new GO KEYS!! Cheers - Tunka
Hydrasynth is $300US off for one more day. I've been holding out for this, but can't do it. Buying a MAC M4mini instead to upgrade video to 3 camera angles using Final Cut Pro and adding mastering software too with Logic Pro.
The OP-Z is a great sequencer, if it had the sound engine and build quality of the OP1 it would be amazing. The new OP-XY is trying to be that mix of OP-Z and OP-1, but it is way too expensive. Although there isn't anything else like it in terms of form factor and power. And no, a smartphone or tablet is not like an OP unit. Hardware buttons, long lifespan, no firmware updates to worry about (it's up to you if you install them). My only gripe with the OP-1 was the tape recorder style of sequencing, I just can't play that accurately :)
I keep my OP-Z and enjoy OP-XY enormously! I never clicked with tape workflow, prepare to never click with it as well. but synth specifically on OP-1f are cool, and OP-1f is stereo. $700 + $400 is a waste tbh while OP-XY exists. But you on a right path, could have shortcut time and money wise, but hey it’s a journey 🎉
good call, and congrats on your XY. Yeah, depending on what I dig the most of the 1 or the Z, I can eventually upgrade to 1F or XY. Can probably get back most of what I paid, so no worries there!
@ Sorry, I missed the main point, why I’m even talking. I watch your channel for a long time and often, appreciate what you share. I understand your preference in out of many instrument to land to something what is keyboard workstation (oppose analog synth, digital hardware, DAW with VST, etc). That’s what XY is. Cheers!
Can U please do a vid on the cheaper genos 2 of psr e383 of nylon guitars and drum kits sax and see if it's the same voices on the genos 2 it might sound better instead of buying genos 2
I bought the same Zoom recorder/mic. I was devastated at the recording quality; it sounds like you have cotton in your ears when playing it back. Your Rhode is an improvement and perfectly acceptable, room dynamics really can't be heard in your YT video. I think you're all set.
I guess people who actually play keys have more of a hard time 'getting' audio tools that emphasize other ways of making music (knob twiddling, sequencers...). I am still trying to wrap my head around SP-404mkII. I have more than enough keyboards now, but if I ever sell any, I won't be getting anything will less than 37 keys.
What out for TE. They have issued Florian at Bad Gear a copyright strike for reviewing a piece of their gear. All he did was demo the samples when he reviewed it!
@@WoodyPianoShack Of the last acquisitions, which cost 6000 dollars, you have only made 4 or 5 videos and no dawless performance (Basically the vast majority of the equipment you bought is for that use I think) You make videos, yes, but the vast majority are of playing keyboard...I would like to see all that equipment, do more interesting things than a comparison or an interpretation of a pop classic from the 80s on an arranger. I like your channel, I follow you, but I would like to see other different things (like before)
AWESOME! You got the OG OP-1!! I use it, put it down, use it, put it down. Each time I realize it's just fun. And intuitive enough after you get past the learn curve. My biggest advice is not to push the boundaries of its connectivity. This child plays best by itself. If you have something worthwhile to develop further, just export it the "Tape" or "Album" to your DAW. I don't recommend doing much else beyond it's boundaries, though it is cool to plug in another instrument for sampling or some phrases.
my two cents on one more thing… Learn the tape first. The workflow in the muscle memory and the possibilities of the tape are just unique. one of the best things about the OP one. But don’t try to do a lot of mixing or final editing there
Have you used an OP-1, a PO, a KO2? Honest question. They’re incredibly fun and, in my personal experience, nicely built, specially the OP-1. Don’t really think they’re overpriced after using them for a while, IMO.
@ i haven’t used them, but have seen YT video’s on them. ‘Incredibly fun’ for that sort of money is exactly what im talking about. Im sure most of us can already do what they offer in a DAW or other software, and go way beyond what the TE stuff can do. Buying something like this as well is a bit extravagant unless you need it.
totally recommend the Op-Z. nice vid

sell the teenage engineering gear and get a Roland integra 7 and some surround sound speakers .
