Oh mate, this takes me back to my youth on the family farm, I bought an old Model A from a neighbour, the engine was all seized up, but I soon had that all fixed, then I stripped the body off and made it into a paddock basher, wow, did this old girl teach me how to drive a non synchro box, we had a make shift race track around the sheds, haystack, and sheep yards, best fun I ever had as a young bloke, we also had a paddock basher 350cc Ariel motor bike, so there was another awesome skill learning to ride, then thrash the motor bike around the track....I will never forget those days. The secret to working a crash box is all in the timing, and don't be timid with the rev matching, Double De Clutch gear changing only slightly slower than with synchro when you know how.

Nice job young man. You are close. I suggest you research and understand the timing advance lever better. You start the car lever at the top as you did, but you do not drive it there. After the car is running a few seconds, pull the lever down a couple notches. (8 to 12 degrees of advance.) When driving out on the road, engine warm, lower the lever a couple more. That will be to about 20 degrees advance. If you begin to run high speed, say 35-45 or 50, move it down a bit more. You can find a nice explanation for this by viewing Paul Shinn's how to time a model a video on RUclips.
Your shift explanation is mostly correct, but I'd like to add that you need to rev the engine for your downshifts while the transmission is in neutral and the clutch pedal is up, not down. When the pedal is down, the engine is disconnected from the transmission, and the input side gears will coast down to a speed that is too slow. With pedal down, you have no way to speed them up. That is why you double clutch to downshift. You use the throttle to increase the speed of the input gears, but the clutch must be engaged to do this.

Drove one. Didn't need to "double clutch". Just very decisive shifting.

@@Skoda130 His engine is idled too high as well, to properly double clutch you need to let the rpm's adjust, and then clutch out in N.

Great video and great explanation. We just got a 1949 truck and a lot of this old technology is very new to us. After watching several other peoples videos that were not so clear on the various processes I came upon yours and watched yours twice and now I've got it. Thanks!!!

When he is demonstrating down shifting with the car stationary, isn't he missing a step when shifting down from second to first? After you have pushed in the clutch and pulled the gear lever from second into neutral, you have to let the clutch out, give the gas pedal a push to raise the rpm, then push the clutch in again and shift down into first. That's why it is called 'double clutching'. Letting the clutch out in neutral and giving the engine some gas causes the transmission's first gear to spin faster thus bring it up closer to the speed of the wheels. Am I wrong?

Good attempt to explain the procedure. Only two things: When you're trying to film your footwork on the pedals, you need to be doing it when the sun is BEHIND you; it was very hard to see what you were doing because your feet were in the shadows. Also, as soon as you move the shift lever to the next position, you need to move your arm OUT OF THE WAY as quickly as possible...again, you were blocking the pedals, this time with your arm!
