Can you make a video about how to prevent rabbits and other wild critters from attacking new fruit trees? Because I have an issue with rabbit gnawing at the roots of my trees.
It's looking good.
May I suggest you put some stain or oil paint on that fence. Probably 3000 in material for your fence you don't want to replace 3-5 years from now...
You're stacking them thick but I see a wonderful finish. Cheers.
What variety of avocado are you planning to get? Also, jujubes are very productive. I know someone who has two. And they sprout so easily through seedling, I don’t know if they produce runners, but they seem to be many at my friends. He dug me up a few. I looked at the retail prices for jujubes, I think they’re over priced for how many trees that can be produced
I have persimmon tree for the last four or five years blossom every year, but never produce a fruit. Do you have any idea why ?
What varieties did you get and from where? Thanks
I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with my plans as well. Just up the coast from you. Over the last week I’ve added 12 fruit trees and 12 new figs as well as 10 blueberries. This brings me to 27 fruit trees and around 25 figs and 8 in ground citrus. Most within a 100’x100’ space that also includes 10 4’x12’ raised garden beds. It’s been a fun journey. While I’ve been working on this for several years, you’ve been an inspiration to me particularly with the citrus. Really enjoy your posts.
Wow, that is awesome! You may have more than me! That is going to be an incredible collection when it's all done. Congratulations!
You sir are a great motivator. You share your knowledge and experience with us as well as letting us see the adventures of Dale.😊
I appreciate it very much! Dale says hello 🐶
This is by FAR my favorite gardening channel. I still hope for you to start doing livestreams!
Thank you! I really want to, but I’m neck deep in so many projects I haven’t had time. I hope to do so this season.
Because you were the one to inspire me to grow a fig tree in the first place, I thought it fitting to name my 2 year old Chicago extra hardy fig 'Dale' 🐶! I'm dreaming of one day trying to grow fruit trees 'espalier' style, something to aspire to, yours are beautiful.
I'm finally starting the garden journey at our new home this year and just bought my first fruit tree! We drove down to Scranton, SC this past weekend so I could get my Owari Satsuma. Stan was very grateful for you and what you've done for his business!
That's outstanding! Stan's a great guy and has the best citrus trees, period. You're going to love that tree.
I live in Massachusetts where the majority only own a tiny lot. I told garden stores that they should carry mostly dwarf to semi dwarf trees. They'd sell a lot more, but they never listen. They have all standard 30-foot fruit trees only.
This is why I almost never buy big box store trees. I don't plant unknown rootstock. If it's a blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, rooted fig, etc., that's all fine, but for other trees, the rootstock should be labeled. I don't like how they don't do that.
Can't you heavily prune them back every year? Wouldn't that create a short and super stumpy tree?
@TheActiveLifeLived from what I've read, you can still buy and train them, but it's going to be more pruning upkeep to keep them small. Still possible.
@TheActiveLifeLived I think you can. It's possible but I think even the roots are much bigger too on a standard tree vs a dwarf rootstock
Came here for the gardening years ago (which I love)…..but stayed for Adventures with Dale aka Mr Handsome. ❤️
He is just so darn handsome. He got all the good genes in the family 😂
I moved to a new house with a lot of land a few years ago and spend about $1000 every year on fruit trees, sticking them basically everywhere I have room. This channel's been very helpful for that. Maybe I'll slow down next season but I always research over the winter and say, hm, I'd like a couple of those...
Can’t wait to see it develop in the future. One thing to note, I believe they recommend not fertilizing in the hole when dealing with clay, because you want to encourage the roots to grow out and not become root bound. I’m sure with Sandy soil. Everything leeches down pretty quickly.
This video was incredibly helpful. Your property is outstanding. Very inspiring. God bless you.
I have figs on my two trees I started last spring. In my research I believe with judicious pruning you don’t have to have dwarf root stock. All dwarf rootstock eventually reverts back to normal size anyway. Pruning is how to keep trees under 8 feet.
I bet it’s somewhat fun to make these videos to share them with people who care. I get 30 fig cuttings shipped in and none of my friends give a shit 😅
That’s a big reason why I make them. It’s hard to find people in daily life that are into it, unfortunately. I hope that changes and backyard growing becomes a normal thing again.
I love how happy you are 10:05
It's nice to see a vision come together.
Awww!
Just have to say, I tried your coffee barrel with water trick and covered with incandescent Christmas lights to protect my baby citrus orchard and nearly all of them survived. They had a little die back, but they're already sprouting new shoots. 🥰
Thank you for your videos. You've helped me establish an orchard of over 100 different fruit trees in 0.5 acres of my backyard.
WOW! That's awesome work! Glad to hear it. I'm not sure what zone your in, but I'm guessing it's too cold to grow citrus unprotected. It's great when things work out, and every year as they mature, they'll get a little hardier.
I contemplated putting my fruit trees along the fence, but I didn't want to have to deal with my future fence replacement damaging my trees. I have an acre so I decided to put my trees up front. Not crazy about the look, but we are dedicated to self-sufficency and we plan on sharing with our neighbors when shtf.
Congratulations! What a success! I love how precise and careful you are in taking care of your garden. It’s so inspiring! 😊
Such an accomplishment! Can't wait to see these plants reach maturity!
Me, too! 🙂
I started my orchard two years ago. I’ve been focusing lately on adding more perennial plants. Need more berry bushes for sure but they’re on the way! I’m in zone 6a so I’m going to put in a dwarf lime and dwarf lemon in my hoop house. Fingers crossed they can thrive in there. Loved watching your video. Thanks for sharing!
I got the Spring Fever bad this year. We got a snow squall today in Denver. I am barely starting with the late winter maintenance and seedlings soon. I yearn for the warm weather!!! You give me hope for a small orchard of my own.
Haven’t been around for the whole journey but I’ve stuck around for a reason! Your advice is well thought out and accurate. Continued success and take Dale out for a walk already!!😂
Thank you! Dale's tail is going to strip the paint off my walls.
Your neighbor Islander has two pomegranate trees. I harvested about 10 pomegranate my first year. I used your Christmas light technique this year on them They have lost most of the leaves. We will see how they do in the spring.
I have been planning out having fruit all year round (70 varieties). Two I have not seen you talk about is Mulberry and Elderberry.
Pomegranates are deciduous, so that's typical. They go into dormancy and are hardy to ~5 degrees or so, at least most varieties. Some, like Wonderful, are not as hardy, but I would assume they don't really need protection here in Zone 8b.
Great video. What will become of your garden when the new FL homestead is developed?
That's so far into the future it doesn't really register with me. That's 5-10 years down the road.
Re: Avocados. You inspired me to push my zone 7b in east TN. I have two in large containers now. The Brogden is outshining the Mexicola so far.
Congratulations on this incredible milestone! You've created a gardener's paradise! I absolutely love your energy and content, and I look forward to your videos each week.
Could you please share your thoughts behind planting your fruit trees between 7 to 9 ft apart? I commonly see spacing recommendations for different fruit/nut tree varieties ranging from 15-30 ft apart. How do you determine how close together they can actually be planted?
Here also builing in the same way. Living for 4 years now at this place. Next year gonna start with cutflower perenials with all the fruit and nut tree's 🤩
Nice! I ordered 2 dwarf apple trees from sharks and planted a few weeks ago. I see new leaves are starting to come out. I have a Russian and a wonderful pomegranate that I bought 2 years ago. Praying I get a few pomegranates this year. The Russian has outgrown the wonderful and is about 8-10’ tall. My Page orange tree is budding out to bloom here in Irmo, SC. I will have to cover and put a light under it if/when we get a freeze. There are wild mulberry trees on my property. They are fast growing trees However the birds eat the mulberries before I can get some. I started a new tree and going to try to keep it small so I can cover and harvest some mulberries 🙂. I enjoy watching your videos….
I have moved more times than I like to count and on each of the places I have lived I have gardened. When you move to another place you think "I know how to garden" but the reality is that it's like learning all over again from scratch! I love your channel because I have learned how to garden in zone 8a and it is helping me not get discouraged, especially with the bugs here in South Carolina! Thank you for taking the time to prepare such good videos with lots of explaining and hands on. I hope you will get lots of fruit and veggies this year! Could you share the links of the trees you mentioned? I am curious to see if I can grow some of them here.
I don't comment near as much as I should. I look forward to all of your videos and I've made many improvements to my gardening hobby thanks to you and your videos. Thank you!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos and found help in them!
Tyrone watching your garden😊
I appreciate it!
Amazing!! I have 40+ container fruit trees growing on a 10x24 ft patio. It can be done! 😁 🌳 🥭 🍒 🍊 🍎
I have been ignoring growing any fruit trees since watching you two years ago. But I'm going to copy you any put at least 3 fruite trees around my fence line. You are so awesome and I have learned so much from you. Thankyou.
That is outstanding! Fruit trees are so much easier than a vegetable garden. Plant them once, do a little annual pruning and they feed you for your whole life!
They will be brimming with fruit in no time! Love those buzzer things for Dale too!
It is amazing how quickly Dale learned the buttons. Within 2-3 days he was good!
@@TheMillennialGardenerHe's a clever boy and it's a great way to communicate with him and vice versa.
Peace and blessings to all who read this 💚🌱🤙✌️🖖
Your adorable we appreciate all you do.
Thank you! I’m glad I can help!
Congratulations on your plantings and 6 years of accomplishment! Your videos are among my top 3 creators to watch on RUclips for gardening because of your thoroughness and thoughtful sharing. Thank you for your work.
Great video. You give gardeners something to aspire to. I would love to be able to do this in a new house. My daschund, Toby's ears perked up when he heard Dale's voice. LOL. 😂😂
Aww, that’s cute. And funny! 😄 No matter where you live, you can do what I’m doing as long as you have some type of yard - even a front yard! Maybe I’ll build out the front next 🤷♂️
Thank you so much for all you shared which help me a lot while I am working on my yard planting fruit trees and garden!!!
Thank-you for sharing your journey. I have learned so much from you, and it keeps me inspired to work on our own food forest. It’s a bit more challenging here in northern Colorado with our insane temperature extremes in a single day, but I’m learning and figuring it out. Your content is wonderful.
Thank you! I’m glad that you’ve found value in my videos despite the different climate. Keep growing on!
I purchased a persimmon tree because of you.👍🏻
Outstanding! You are going to love it! They are quickly becoming my favorite fruit. My figs are getting jealous 😂
Because of you I've got party time cucs growing and my nectarine is doing great, thank you 🌺🌹
Outstanding! You're going to love that cucumber.
You motivated me to try out Citrus trees in Virginia. Thanks for the helpful videos!
I just found your channel and absolutely love it! It is truly so helpful, and I love your delivery of information.
Thank you for sharing. Wish I had your garden. Love all the fruit trees.
Everything in my yard, I built 100% on my own. I'm not a handy person, so if I can do it, anyone can. Break it up into tiny projects. That's how I did it. My yard is the product of 6 years worth of Saturday's. I know you can do it if I can.
Hi I watch you from Melbourne Australia. Your videos are informative and inspirational. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! I appreciate you watching!
I want to be one of the ones to thank you for showing how to plant and protect your fruit trees. I hope to soon have a place in E. Tennessee, the same zone as NC. You have given me hope that I can grow my favorite fruits.
I am proud of you. You planned it and made it happen. It is not easy but thank God you are young and have the strength to do it. I have been following you for years and love the detail you put in every video. You are very meticulous in your work and that helps a lot. Congratulations in an amazing job. God knows what you have in the future. It has been a long road but so far you still in it. You have inspired me to work in my garden and I know there is a lot to learn but it is my hobbie and although I get tired when I have accomplish something is a great feeling. Many blessing.
Thank you for all your hard work and great info you share. You have made so many things doable, no crazy physics formulas, just straight simple and to the point. My food forest is still in the beginning stages but I'm getting there!
It’s inspiring to see success stories like yours. To be honest, it was Dale that had me watching at first😬😊 Your honesty and hard work are what has kept me watching. Trial and error have been a great help while you edit your garden space into what it is today. I hope everyone can take this same approach in their own gardens, understanding that microclimates are a real thing. God’s plan is perfect, we simply have to make the space in our lives for things to thrive. Hugs to you and Dale from California❤
It's been a really fun journey. I would recommend everybody build their yard out in little waves over many seasons. Not only does it make it more manageable and affordable, but you may change your mind. In the beginning, I was going to plant all figs. I'm glad I changed my mind. It would've been such a waste having one huge crop for 2 months, but no food the rest of the year. Now, I have harvests of something nearly 365 days a year. Also, it drags the fun out. It's so much fun researching trees in the fall and getting excited for a new spring planting. Thanks for all your support!
I'm from NY. Thanks to you, my figs were pruned and protected. Also, I followed your instructions for my own grow light station in my garage. Thanks!
Would love to know where you ordered the bare root trees from, how you decide where to plant/place them in the yard and if you have them on irrigation? I'm in central GA (zone 8A) and we have tons of peach/pecan farms around... so I've been growing fuzzy kiwi 😅 and they do amazing! They grow a bit like grapes and I learned that keeping them small and managable will grow a smaller crop but better fruit. I do get a little frost damage if temps fall below 10° but your trick of christmas lights has helped protect them more than just frost jackets 👍👍
Great job 👏 you have been doing well for me and I think a large number of home gardeners
I hope so. I'm glad the videos have been helpful.
Thank you for posting this! It helps so much MG! Hello Dale🤗😁👍👍
You're welcome! Dale says hi 🐶
Your presentation and information are always engaging. Thank you.
You’re welcome! I appreciate it!
Your trees are going to be so awesome! Thanks for sharing
You're very welcome!

Your backyard is amazing!
Thank you!
I always enjoy and learn from your videos. Thank you so very much for sharing your gardening knowledge and experience.
I appreciate it! glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Dale is so smart and precious!
He is very smart. And enthusiastic 🙂
😊awesome!
What a fantastic accomplishment! I’m certain there will still be plenty to keep you busy. I lost my entire front flower bed bushes (dwarf azaleas, dwarf Bottlebrush, and hydrangeas) to the prolonged hard freeze in January. Can you recommend any dwarf fruit bearing plants that are shrub like? I’m in Zone 9A on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
You have a great looking food forest. I'm right up the road in Fayetteville and you have motivated me to grow fruit trees. I have 5 trees that will be delivered in the next few weeks. Thanks
Outstanding! I'm so happy to hear that! You're going to love it once they start fruiting.
Congratulations
Thank you!
Looking real nice
Thanks!
Great information thank you
Amazing!!!
Thank you!
Appreciate your great content as always, I personally am on similar journey, and have much less space than you - city lot at south charlotte. My understanding is we need to at least provide 10ft diameter around the tree (even though grafted) otherwise it needs to be pruned heavily and will result much less fruits per tree - we'll see how it goes ("grows") in coming years. Thanks again
Looks great so far
Thank you!
I have begun to run out of room like you! But I popped a gate in my back fence and am having fun working in my green belt! I have an old growth forest back there, its a beautiful secret garden and a field i just planted many western redcedar in and a few other fast growing trees. Its the greenbelt, but has satisfied my need for more room! And nobody goes there but me😊.
I really thought you had fig trees all along that fence, but maybe they are on the other side?
You are just the best planner and gardener and I too have done all ive done under your influence ..you and Laura from Oregon, since im in Wa.
You seem perfect and someone your mom must be proud of❤
Love your videos. Thanks for the great content and excellent explications. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Wow, I was just thinking about you this morning and here you are. Thank you for a great vid.
You’re welcome! I appreciate you watching.
Jujube is very invasive, kind of like wisteria in regard to it root spreads. In 2-3 years it will send out little plant seedings throughout your garden and it will be a pain to rid of them. So proceed with caution. If i was you i would plant them in container.
You are a treasure. Thank you for sharing your journey ❤
Thank you so much! You’re welcome!
Thanks you
You're welcome!
What an awesome design! I'm going to break out autocad and design some fruit tree planting designs
Thanks! Laying it out is so much fun.
Hi there! I just planted Brown turkey fig andan Arkansas black apple tree. I keep saying that I wont buy any more fruit trees. Thank you for the information!
This video has me looking at bareroot apple trees tonight since I've been contemplating finally building a little orchard on the northeast boundary near my fence.
Incredible! Great video!
Thank you!
Isn’t it awesome when your vision finally comes together? I feel the exact same way as I continue to evolve my landscaping and garden. I’m hoping I’ll be mostly done by end of this year. Just need to fight my HoA on letting me use my backyard!
It's a great feeling, for sure. Can you put a fence around your backyard? What's behind your fence is invisible from the street, so HOA's can't observe.
I have been learning so much from you. You take things to another level with planting details, all kinds of info from building structures, frost protection, etc, and precision. Which I need more of. So thank you!
@@TheMillennialGardenerUnfortunately, there's a service road for our garages bifurcating that backyard from the rest of the house. That backyard directly abuts another neighbors house. It's an awkward design. They pack the houses in a little too tight here.
It’s been fun watching your progress. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great video I really enjoyed watching it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
U are a huge inspiration to me! I feel like a kindred spirit since I am from eastern PA. I'm currently clearing a section of my wooded driveway for a garden. The spotted lantern flies killed most of the trees, so it's going to be a clean slate. Im using trees that I cut to build raised garden beds for now. I recently purchased my first fruit trees and grape vines as well. My huge question for u though is.... do u think I could grow an Orinoco banana and Satsuma orange here? Did u have them when u were in NJ? Tysm for ur videos and keep up the great work!
Love your videos!
Thank you!
You ROCK Anthony! Will be joining you in North Carolina soon on our new homestead.
Outstanding! Will you be local to my area? If you're in eastern NC, you should be able to grow just about everything I grow.
Wow! I am so proud of you! This is so awesome, Congrats! From an avid Baby Boomer follower up in South Central Washington State, you inspire me! Keep on growing! And give Dale a treat for gosh sakes😂
Thank you for all your info! I have been motivated by your garden and we are expanding our garden this year with a couple more beds.
That’s amazing! I’m so glad to hear that 👏
Wonderful! I always get excited about planting new trees. I planted a Dapple Dandy Pluot next to my Santa Rosa Plum a few days ago. It has blossom on it!
Excellent. My new pluot tree, which I just planted on Saturday, is already starting to make little flowers. I'm going to have to remove them, unfortunately, to let it establish for a year.
@@TheMillennialGardener I was greedy and got a 4 yr old tree😁 At my age time is of the essence!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Including your mistakes, so we can all learn together. Howdy from Texas 🤠
You're welcome!
Your videos are the best and most concise I’ve seen. Hope you’re ready for the top- you’re going there! Thank you for the hard work you do to share your knowledge with us.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
Cool, MG! Great job!👍 I'm looking forward to the new fruits you are introducing us to.😋
Dale is too cute!😃 He knew just what he wanted...walk, then supper.🐕💕
I am, too 😂 Dale had a great weekend. My cousin visited, so we had 2 pack walks throughout the neighborhood. I swear, the boy would want to walk if the streets were on fire...
@@TheMillennialGardener 😄
Thank you for all your great tips. I get my shipping from McKenzie Farm this week and I'm so nervous and worried about planting my Owari Satsuma Mandarin and Bloomsweet Grapefruit. I'm taking a big risk trying to grow these in Zone 6B but you gave me the courage to do so. I'm nervous because temps here some nights are still in the teens but get in the 40's 50's during the day. I'm also worried that my soil is still very wet and muddy. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
💜
Nice pullover
Dale in his Santa Hat. One of my favorite designs. I offer it in my Spreadshop as merch 😂
Make a video showing what you do with all this produce.
I do have a lot of harvesting videos. The way I designed my yard, I get food 365 days a year. There is *always* something with fruit on it. So, while it's a lot of trees, because they all ripen at different times of the year, it's never overwhelming. I eat what's in season and buy very little produce.
@@TheMillennialGardener I grow in about 8 containers and have so much stuff I can't eat it all. You have to harvest enough to sell stuff at the farmers market. Last year we were giving bags of tomatoes and peppers to neighbors we had so much.
Wow I wish I had this much space to plant more trees like you, but my backyard is about half the size so I work with what I’ve got. I’m intrigued to see how your flavor punch pluerry grows. I’m also growing one, and out of all my 9 various fruit trees I planted last year, it and my Oktoberfest peach are the only trees not to have woken up yet here in North CA. My sweet treat pluerry growing about 4ft away has already started to flower, so I’m hoping flavor punch wakes up to get some cross pollination.
Great design! I don't have nearly as much space so my trees are closer together and are being kept smaller. But they still produce well.
It's amazing what fruit trees can do, especially dwarf grafted trees. They can produce more than you'll need in a tiny footprint.
Thank you for sharing all your gardening tips and tricks! They really do work! You have motivated me to expand my small food forest this year. Just planted an Ichi Ki Kei Jiro Asian Persimmon and a bare root Red Haven Peach. Do you run drip irrigation to all your perimeter trees?
❤
I eish I had your vision Anthony! I get so overwhelmed. My soil is awful so I am trying raised bed and container growing but I want my space to look nice. Want to design my garden? Lol
It's similar here. My soil is sandy, so it is well draining, but it's nutrient-poor, full of nematodes and the back half of my yard is nothing but tree roots. It requires a lot of compost and mulch. It's taken me 6 years to realize this vision and get this far. It's too much to view it as a single project, but if you plant 4-8 trees every spring and 2-4 trees every fall, it becomes easy. You just have to do it. That's the best advice I can give you - don't think too hard about it and just get started and do it.
I'm literally growing on 1inch top soil with bedrock underneath. Be happy your situation is better than mine LOL.
I thought they started recommending not amending soil anymore because there is a belief that roots don't spread out and get as strong when people do this. Amy thoughts? I've done both ways and don't know if there's a difference. I'm not sure if fruit trees have different "rules". Just wanted your take on that. Thanks
