  • Part of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway, restored to running ordr relatively recently. The attention to detail is excellent as is the whole construction. Hard to imagine this was a cleared site before they started. Sit back and enjoy.
    Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
    My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching.     Today, you've made my day. What a wonderful video. From no station at all, to the beauty we see today, is incredible, bearing in mind what you said, all done by volunteers.
    My dear friend, Clive Groome, who ran Footplate Days and Ways - teaching whoever wanted to learn how to drive a steam loco, running courses on the Bluebell Railway. His favourite loco to drive of all time was P&O Line, and there it was today. In my 40s and 50s, I had many days out with Clive who unfortunately passed away in February of this year, in his 80s. His 3 daughters as car as I know are all passed firemen and are still volunteers on the Blurbell

    Really hope the line reaches Honeybourne...mainlin connection is always a bonus for attracting more visitors, as with East Grinstead Matlock and Duffield. Sublime GWR architecture..those wrought iron benches...that signal, the lamp.. Lovely video, thank you.

      Yes, me too! Opens up the possibility of direct racecourse day specials via The Cotswold Line once more - far better than via Cheltenham Spa Station and busses from there getting stuck in traffic.

    Hi Ron, thanks for a really enjoyable video. You always capture the little things that are so characteristic of the past. The clocks, the GWR scripts on the bench ends and the many signs now long gone elsewhere. And the locomotive was so beautiful. A real credit to those who look after it. And to you for filming the detail so closely. Through your videos we can see and hear the magic of the past but you have an advantage over us when you film. You can smell the steam engine. And that brings the past to life.

    A magnificent fir tree drive up to the superbly rebuilt Broadway station, which should surely qualify for an architectural award. The attention to detail is astonishing and must have absorbed many hours of dedicated, voluntary labour - and a considerable amount of finance. Let's hope that the posters announcing trips to Stratford and beyond, will, one day, be for real. Very enjoyable video. Thank you.

    Hi Ron. What an incredible amount of time and talent went into that restoration...it's good to know that such skills are still around. Definitely a "must-do" if I ever make it over again. Still recovering from my participation as an unwilling projectile, I've had to travel to Boston for four days with the rowing team for a regatta. The weather is superb and there's a lot to see here. Of course the only real drawback is not having you-know-who to play with...yes, I know I complain, but I guess I miss it. Have a good week and we'll see you on Friday.

    The Merchant Navy Class Locomotive was beautiful. I am exceptionally partial to that green color. For the most part, our American Steamers were more brutish in their plain black, unpolished skins.

    Good morning, wonderful video on such a beautiful day too. Fantastic to see the absolutely outstanding work the GWSR volunteers achieved in completing an almost perfect replica of the original station. The attention to detail in your video was first class, thank you so much for sharing your talent and experience including a nice cup of tea & cake.
    I seem to remember that shortly after Broadway station reopened that you did a video map reference and walk along the disused track to Honeybourne, that would be such a boost for the GWSR to have a mainline connection, like the Bluebell, the Watercress to name but a few. A thoroughly enjoyable video, really brightened my day.

    Morning Ron,
    The restored station demonstrated the original practicality of the station design, so many licks of brown paint and a nice touch to incorporate a few railway antiques to give it that genuine feel. I concur with the comments and memories of your other commenters. The interview with the driver John on your part was a stroke of genius. I never knew that stopping a steam train in the right place was such an art and must have justified the higher pay train drivers received. It just goes to prove that everybody has something interesting to say and hear.

    Mornin’ Ron,
    A lovely video, really enjoy getting up close to see the linkages coming out of the signal box and on the engines too.
    They have done a truly amazing job on the rebuild, it almost looks too new!! Some skilled brickwork on show.
    I liked the livery on the DMU, it reminded me of Daisy from the Rev W. Awdry’s books but Daisy didn’t have the curved V on the front.
    Well done to John for coming on, I can imagine its quite a skill stopping in the right place. Interesting to hear that he was driving in Poland on the Wolsztyn, as far as I can see its still running mainline services there.
    We’ve been in the clouds these last few days, some rain at long last and even some snow higher up, although I can’t see it from down here at the moment.

    Good evening Ron and, as always, thank you for today's offering. I can't imagine what a daunting task it must be to start off with a piece of waste ground and build a station on it. Even more frustrating when you think that there was one there previously and, given some forward thinking, could have saved a lot of time and effort had it been saved. The new station, although very authentic, needs a few seasons now to weather and really look the part. It did make the hairs on my neck stand up a bit when I saw one of our beautiful Southern Region rebuilt Merchant Navy Pacifics on GWR metals. Still, they had nothing to compare to it really so they had to turn to the best 😆😅. Broadway station was on the ex GWR line from Honeybourne to Cheltenham Malvern Road, the line being authorised by act of parliament in 1899. The GWR intended the line to be a rival to the Midland's main line from Birmingham to Cheltenham Lansdown station via the famous Lickey incline. The GWR line was built in sections between 1904 and 1906, with the first section to Broadway being opened on 1st August 1904. Many stations on the line, including Broadway, were built to the standard GWR design where the station roof and platform canopy formed a single structure. The station was built of red brick which was unusual as some of the other stations along the line were built of Cotswold stone. Another curious feature of Broadway station is that it did not have a front door. Passengers had to reach the platform by a side gate at the end of the building. This feature has not been included in the new station building. The station closed to passengers on 7th March 1960 and to freight on 1st June 1964. There is so much more I could write about this interesting station, such as layout, freight and passenger facilities, detail of signal box etc but, as I'm going away to see my family for a week tomorrow, I had better start getting some packing and preparation done!!     Good morning Ron. You have to admit that the Merchant Navy class are wonderful locomotives. They come from my area of the country, so I might be a little biased. Those engines would have once travelled through Andover and Salisbury, hauling trains for the South West of England, via Exeter and Barnstaple. Happy memories.
    Walking around Broadway station was very nostalgic, with all the authentic items on display. That sort of thing is so important on a heritage railway. I noticed two members of staff in the booking office. They either knew you were coming, or were expecting large numbers of passengers to arrive. You had a nice chat with that driver, John. He must have seen some changes, as you and I have in our lifetime .

    I was there a few weeks ago, starting from Winchcombe. An added highlight was catching a Routemaster bus into Broadway. Not sure it would have got under that bridge, had the driver forgotten to turn right into the station!

    Good evening Ron.
    It is incredible what the GWSR volunteers have achieved here in such a relatively short time.
    There were building on the other platform at Broadway Station when I was last there a few weeks ago. Things are happening there quite quickly. By the look of it, you'd think this was the original GWR buildings, and not built in the late 2010s. Amazing attention to detail and quality of workmanship.
    The GWSR Heritage Railway is one of the very few that are financially solvent, and not burdened with debt. I think the connection to The Cotswold Line is very much doable in the future. It could then open up the possibility of direct specials onto GWSR metals from other places, like London and the South East, as well as race day specials from London & The Midlands/North - rather than the current de-train and decant onto bus nonsense at Cheltenham Spa Station, as it the current arrangement.
    At the other end of the line, Racecourse Station is walkable from Cheltenham Spa railway station, but the last 1/4 mile needs some work as it is near the busy Evesham road and it has a narrow pavement. There is a bus that get you near there too (Pittville).
    I am very excited by their plans and what they have already achieved on The Stanway Viaduct repairs.

    Hi Ron. A bit behind this week. What a lovely job they made of the rebuilding ,so nice to see. Luckily the pine trees were not removed The GWR really like their pines. I wonder what was the reason ? Poor Syd has a poorly tail. Seems he has overdone the wagging !! Stay safe Pete

    Good evening Ron. I hope everyone in your worldwide family is doing well. What a delight awaited us all this morning. It was lovely to see Broadway station on a beautiful day. It really is perfect there. Unfortunately it’s just a little bit out of reach for the elder sister from here. If only it was linked in to Cheltenham still. So nice to see both the steam train and the DMU come into the station. Was there time for coffee and cake in between trains? You get a splendid view of everything along the route with the DMU chuntering along. How did we progress from those to 158s? The GWR is a long line with reaching Broadway and I hope they can continue to afford the coal to run their super steam locos. No travels this week as the elderly back is playing up. I wonder what comes next Friday. Have a good week everyone. 🚂🚃🚄

    The problem with extending to Honeybourne is financial. The bridges are in a poor state so buying the trackbed would mean a large financial commitment. It would be great to have a mainline connection but Honeybourne is a bit out of the way. A real shame that they can't make a connection at the Cheltenham end, but the original alignment is not feasible.
