- ABQ BioPark Zoo, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a facility of the Albuquerque Biological Park. Founded in 1927, the 64-acre (26 ha) zoo was originally known as the Rio Grande Zoo. Sections of the zoo include an Africa exhibit area, an Australia exhibit area, the "Cat Walk" and a herpetology area. An endangered species carousel was added in 2016. A narrow-gauge railroad connects the zoo to the other facilities of the Albuquerque Biological Park. Walking distance through the zoo is 2.27 miles (3.65 km).
The Albuquerque Biological Park is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Exhibits
Flamingo Crossing
A moated island located at the beginning of the zoo that holds the zoo's flock of Caribbean flamingos. The island is lush with bamboo vegetation.
Reptile House
The reptile house was remodeled in 2012. With the renovations the building houses mostly reptiles. The exhibit houses many species of snakes, tortoises and lizards.
Raptor Roost
Several large aviaries house Andean condors, golden eagles, great horned owls and Steller's sea eagles.
Mexican Wolf Exhibit
This exhibit holds the zoo's pack of Mexican wolves, the most endangered species of wolf in the United States.
Inukshuk Bay
This large exhibit offers many views of the zoo's polar bears. One can see them through underwater viewing windows or walk to the top of the exhibit and watch the bears lounge, feed, and slide down the waterfall.
Catwalk
Grottos in this exhibit hold the zoo's big cats among other animals.
Amphibians: Life on a Limb
With the renovation of the Reptile House in 2012, the zoo opened up Amphibians: Life on a Limb, replacing the original Gator Swamp,
Asia
This exhibit was originally home to just several elephant yards and two barns for the zoo's Asian elephant herd of two males and four females. The area was expanded in 2023, adding flex exhibits for the zoo's orangutans, siamangs, tigers and snow leopards.
Africa
Six acres of land holding 17 separate exhibits and 23 species of mammals and birds.
Ape Walk
This trail houses the zoo's apes, including siamangs, and western lowland gorillas.
Birds of the Americas
Five species of birds from North and South America are mixed in this aviary: burrowing owls, Gambel's quails, greater roadrunners, hyacinth macaws and sun conures.
Penguin Chill
In July 2019, the highly anticipated penguin chill exhibit opened. The multi-million dollar exhibit was funded through a city tax bond. The exhibit features gentoo penguins, macaroni penguins, and king penguins, and is the first of its kind in the Southwest. The 14,550 sq ft (1,352 m2) building includes a 75,589 US gal (286,140 L; 62,941 imp gal) main tank, above-ground and underwater guest viewing areas.
Birds of the Islands
Opened in 2020, the zoo opened the Birds of the Islands exhibit on the location of the former parrot habitat. This exhibit is part of the Zoo's Americas Trail. Adjacent to the aviaries is an exhibit for Aldabra giant tortoises.

I live in ABQ and its cool to see this video. I was here recently as well
That was such an impressive zoo, I really enjoyed my time there
Hi Tom, The layout of this zoo is incredible, I especially love the Asian section
The layout makes it very easy to get to everything without constantly having to backtrack. The new area is fantastic, I'm sure the animals absolutely love their new habitat
it would be great to make a playlist about ABQ
can't wait for the phase 2 of the Australia exhibit to be complete, ABQ Biopark has the distinction of having the only Tasmanian Wombat in the country, it is currently behind the scenes though while they build the new habitats for it and the other australian species.
If the Asian expansion turned out so good then the Australian section will be awesome too
Aquarium Check
Botanical garden check
zoo check
part 2 next week
Almost here
@@TomsRoadTrippin yes almost
Part 2
That'll be available next Thursday
Yes
Also they used to have Bactrian Camels but they had to leave to due to the Asia expansion
The Asian expansion was so worth it
@@TomsRoadTrippinI second that
They also used to have Binturongs but not anymore
Now they need to redesign the cat walk area next
@@TomsRoadTrippinthe Binturongs were in the Catwalk
@@TreySarver-p5x that whole area is so outdated
Did you know that they used to have Seals and Sea Lions but transferred them to the National Aquarium and demolished the exhibit to make way for the Australia construction
Yeah they certainly are doing a lot of renovations
@@TomsRoadTrippin or Rhinovations if you will
You should check out the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma Washington
I'll go during my Northwest roadtrip
Utica Zoo has a bald eagle that can fly quite well .
It's not always the wings, something is preventing the bird from being able to live on it's own
Also before the Penguin Chill exhibit that used to be the Tropical America building
The penguin are a great addition to this zoo
@@TomsRoadTrippinI'll say
I've been to this Zoo before
This is a fantastic zoo, I absolutely loved the overall design of this place
@@TomsRoadTrippin so do I
7:07 that’s a water monitor btw
Did you mean the statue?
@@TomsRoadTrippin no, the real lizard before it. You can tell by its tail
@@Jgimple oh the one that was down in the water, only it's tail viewable?
Did you hear that they used to have Lions there too but they sent them to the Abilene Zoo and the Polar Bear exhibit ended up expanding into the former Lion enclosure
I did notice the extra polar bear Rea looked like it once housed another animal
@@TomsRoadTrippinoh yes, Singapore zoo also used to have a polar bear named inuka, sadly he passed away in 2018 from health complications and old age
That's always sad when a well loved zoo animal passes away
@@TomsRoadTrippin yeah I agree 😞, now his exhibition has turned into a animal playground (the raccoon dogs and wolverines inside the old frozen tundra exhibit also have been moved out a few months later)
@@progamer_yt9063 the zoo may be getting the old habitat ready for a new animal
