This is a must know if you're looking to buy a BMW
😂
You don't own BMW, do you?
@@malchone1 I think it’s obvious 😂
@@malchone1 you probably think changing vanos solenoids and coils+sparkplugs every 60k miles in considered regular maintenance 💀💀
Not really, the motors are strong it’s just the other stuff
Just so you know, I installed my turbo on my e90 335i all because of your amazing content.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. Its great having you in the BMW community.
Say what you want; BMW engineer their engines really well with tight specs. Installing something less than perfect will cause problems. People say BMW is unreliable but they don’t know didly. Do the maintenance and they will run forever.
Finally a basic maintenance video for my bmw!!
Thank you for that Sunday morning bmw show, sad to find that the crank was garbage after you ran it, but thank you for calling it out, and going through it again, that type of issue is something that an inexperienced builder would never of understood and they would’ve had the same problem and lost complete confidence and in the end scrap the motor. Thank you for this content ❤ and proving you need OEM when you’re doing such technical work.
IMPORTANT! When using plastigauge to measure crank clearances you must make sure the crankshaft journals and the bearings are DRY (not lubricated). Otherwise, your measurements will not be accurate. Also, never spin the crank when dry.
For the pistons bearings ?
@@Foreignsgarage444 For the main bearings and for the rod bearings, yes.
Bmw engine has 6 cylinders...
Sorry Bro 😅
Nice work👍🏻
Love the in depth content, so unique to see on RUclips. Keep it up
Great cars again Musa! My father used to say; 'You have to make mistakes to reach the next level!'. And he was right! Thanks for the fabulous content guys, Dutch regards, Nico.
Thank you Nico, we will do diesel M57 assembly for your Dutch regards😉
Did you work for BMW at some point??
Nice build install vid... Lots of good information in this... I just did a rebuild on an N26 and have so far had nothing but trouble getting the VANOS system to run properly. I had glitter from a toasted oil pump (also chain guide issues) and replaced nearly every part and sensor, but due to product availability only ultrasonically cleaned the original VANOS cam actuators. Now I'm playing with weird crank case pressures and lots of VANOS faults. Glad to see you got your vehicle up and running... I really hope I don't have to pull the engine out again...
Weird crank case pressures and VANOS faults means it is mistimed
@@igotaction I hope it is that simple. I have it back apart (cam cover off) now and everything lines up with all the timing tools in place. The timing lock tool kit I purchased was the same one from the older Vehicular DIY video so it should be correct. (I probably even bought it through the affiliate link). I have new VANOS gears being delivered tomorrow and will try timing it all again this weekend.
The VANOS Adjustment unit can literally be in any orientation? It's just the Impulse sending wheel that needs to be clocked based on the timing lock tool? It's my understanding that it doesn't matter where the Adjustment unit is clocked as long as the Impulse sending wheels are correct.
I resolved it by replacing nearly every component related to the VANOS. I hate being that guy that shotguns a bunch of parts at a problem, but I didn't have to play around and the old parts had over 100k miles so it's not a bad "While you are in there" thing. I also had the intake pressure sensor and manifold pressure sensor plugs swapped causing another series of faults. Really lame that they are right next to each other and the connectors fit in both...fingers crossed it sticks with no faults and especially not the dreaded power train ones.
Where did you get a new crankshaft is there any oe that are good or did you have to go with oem
I'm curious why you didn't work with a machine shop to help with some of these crank issues. I rebuilt an N14 for a Mini Cooper and found that my main bearing clearances were too much, so I sent the block, crank and bearings to them and the engine is literally perfect without having to buy different OEM bearing sizes. I've put more than 5,000 miles on the rebuild with zero oil consumption and plenty of high RPM use with no problems.
Hey I need your opinion I want to get my n20 328i motor walnut blasted but some people say I shouldn’t because it may damage my engine but I want to get it done what do you think??
They don't have near the problem N54 had. Probably need a timing chain more.
Very instructive. Even on American engines new parts are often not to specification. New old stock is the only reliable source.
Sir, I've noticed you're N54 is missing 2 cylinders
Great video! I can’t imagine having to tear everything apart again after a fresh rebuild but now everyone else knows what to look out for with purchasing a replacement crank shaft. Nice work on the rebuild I’m looking forward to rebuilding my n20 with a bad rod knock!
Do n54 next!😂 please!😅
Your content is outstanding. We all learn that Big Rock Candy Mountain lesson (counterfeits).
I wish you'd soon go into your stand-alone efforts for the N family of engines.
To the best of my knowledge there is no N20/26 swap guide. The engine just begs to be swapped into just about anything.
Keep up the great work.
Keep watching we are N20 swapping a Nissan 240 right now
Do this again for n54
One of the best videos for sure… Excellent work
Where do you find the torque specs and other repair info? Looking for a good service manual
Tighten until you can't and then back it off a quarter turn.
I have been looking for a digital tq wrench with the degree meter could you share the name or link of the tq wrench you use? I cannot find one anywhere I was looking for one that goes to 270* but 180* will be fine
I see ECU is refrigerated by intake air like M-Benz but in a turbo perhaps is not a good idea at least in theory.
Congratulations once more
BimmerN53
great job, dude! I want to do same thing with N52 lol. I love the engine.
but wow chinese crankcase.. chinese copy everything.. maybe there is a chinese m3 lol
Hey musa I have a question for u I’m a bmw enthusiast like ur self and I wanna move over from Canada to USA I wanna see what’s the the best way and potentially learn how u did it is there anyway to reach you so we can talk.
Could you help me, I need to rebuild my engine, it's an N20B20 and I would like to know what kind of spare parts I need for the engine, I'm from Chile South America, there are no components here. I have to bring everything to the USA and I need guidance. There are many suppliers, I need connecting rod metals, crankshaft metals, rings, pistons, cylinder head gasket. Best regards
These look like quite a strong engine design. Not necessarily Mitsubishi 4G63, or Nissan FJ20 strong, but good nonetheless.
I have the BMW X1 it has the N20 in it. Just wondering about which way the factory OEM pistons go back in as far as any markings. I didn't take them out and he doesn't remember which way they go back in. But it has a QR code on the top of the piston no arrows. I'm thinking looking down at the engine and seeing the pistons already in the bore wouldn't the QR code be on the right side or?
A BMW ENGINE have SIX cilinders!!!...
Perfect video to listen to while I have my cup of coffee, I enjoyed building my n20 it was nice to get to chat and meet you in person a while back as well! May need some help with e92 335i n54 questions in the near future as well 😅
B series engines are technically BMW/TOYOTA no ?
amazing its give alot of more focus to put it together, not that easy as LEGOs but almost the same but just more precise
How about a trade for the exact BMW x3 2013 with 100k and timing failure.
I recently rebuilt my n20 engine and have no spark. No error codes or faults. Do you have any words or advice ?
I won't be a D eater ! but you guy's are awesome ! Lolololol aside from how serious things may get we are all just building BMW Motors Correct ? BMW folks be like... serious, no seriously ! but maybe not seriously...relax and build the Motor. Vehicular DIY your awesome bud ! thanks for keeping these N54's running properly everywhere !!!!
So we have a BMW M57 diesel build and then a Mercedes M278 build coming up
Outstanding engine build ! If it’s not made in Germany it won’t work in or on a Bmw .
Hello, could you tell me where to buy the complete package to repair the engine?
I spun a rod bearing on my N54. Was driving fine on a long distance drive. Soon as I heard a knock, I pulled over and turned the engine off. Had it towed home. Have you ever seen anyone replace the rod bearing and keep the original piston rod if the crank is able to be polished? If so, did it last them or spin the bearing again shortly after. The car has been stock the whole life of the vehicle. Has 160k miles. Sorry for the dumb question, I just don’t have another vehicle.
If you don't tear the engine down you will be just gambling.
Could you please tell me the correct orientation of the 17mm bed plate bolts? 5 are larger than the other 5 and I'm not quite sure how to reassemble it. Lol please help
did you install the brand new piston in any particular order or just random ?
Thank-you for the video I would like to know what break-in oil you used and for how long did you let it run Before replacing the oil again?
Driven 5w-30. I do 15 miles 20% throttle then total cool down then 15 miles 40% throttle then full cool down then 15 60% throttle then oil change then good to go
keep up the amazing work -
The link to timing kit comes with the oil pump drive as well ?
Do you live near a military base? heard a mention of skilcraft & thought maybe another vet/service member lol
Yes if you look closely you will see a USS RONALD REAGAN t Shirt
Hood open = in service mode 😂
That's the most bmw shit I've heard today
finally a new video from my favorite RUclips channel.
there is plastic.....INSIDE the engine??????!!!!!!
I wish I had someone to help me rebuild my bmw 325 I 2006
And remember folks if it leaks oil it's got oil in it!
23:12 The goal is to not smash it, he says. But murphies law had other plans
build 2 that way you have one when the first breaks down
I have a N20 that needs to be rebuilt and how do I get in touch with you
I’m surprised you guys do not drop the engine through the bottom with the front subframe.
We can pull that in about two hours from the top right to the engine stand. I can do N63 in less
Greetings from South Africa, i own a repair shop specializing in BMW repairs, we have countless engine failures with these Chinese crankshafts and cost our shop lots of money in repairs due to defective crankshafts, stay away from Chinese products and rather try and find good used parts.
Musa wanted to try the experiment, the first N20 we did we did it my way. Great learning opportunity though.
Do you know any options for getting a crankshaft besides 900$ used ones? Or are all the oe bad?
Hi Musa,
Thank you so much for providng such useful contents. We are a professional steering wheel wrap manufacture and we wonder if you are interested in collaborating with us?
not sure going super expensive OEM bearings was needed as aftermarket can be even better. the issue was clearly just the junk chinese crank. also are you supposed to spin it bone dry like that? seemed smooth but these parts need oil i thought..
Thought so too. I've used aftermarket cranks and bearings with zero problems but made sure the oil pump and balance shaft was genuine
Hey what up buddy I have a 2015 bmw 528i n20 engine I have low compression on cylinder 1-3-4 90 psi cylinder 2 119 psi I did a cylinder leak down test and I can hear it coming out of crank case remove oil cap and yeah air coming out can these engine be hone ? Or if is out of timing would it give me low compression?
Out of timing can make low compression but you should be able to check the valves with a borescope. It would have to be sleeved which is stupid expensive
Where you get all bolts torque spec
Great content. Keep up the good work.
Did you guys plug that hole when you lock the timing for the oil pump? What if you don’t plug it?
Per bmw docs on the N20 it is needed to keep the oil from frothing which over time will cause bearing damage. The plastic plug is less than $2 so leaving it out is not worth the gamble.
Lights on the trunk are broken.
I’m a truck driver i make decent income but I can’t afford to leave my job and go to school to become an auto mechanic but it is my absolute dream to Be a BMW tech/mechanic. Any tips or advice please help.
Don't, being a tech you get treated like shit. Do it as a hobby
I just purchased a rebuilt N20 engine for my 328i. The shop claims all new parts but didn't say anything about OEM. How can I find out if I could possibly run into the same crankshaft issue you ran into with the Chinese part and oil flow issues?
How does the N20 compare to the newer version?
Edit B48A20T1 I believe from the newer 330i
Very very cool, What is the next project😁🤩
BMW M57 full engine assembly, Mercedes M278 engine assembly
quick question is it cheaper to rebuild an engine myself or to just buy a used one for about $5,000. I have an n20 328i and it has rod knock. would i need a whole differnt engine or just swap out whats damaged and rebuild. Also what is a rough estimate for a rebuild in general minus labor because i would be doing it with my brother
Chinese crankshaft. I would've never chanced that one but good lesson. Know you know
You my brother have by far the best content out there.
Precise
Excellent explanations
Absolutely no banana brain music or goofy side remarks.
I expect to see good things in the future for you!
Hey link in description for my man’s blue shirt there..😂
Amazon, great shirt right
Wait, the I've got a big Diesel shirt or the CVN-76 shirt??? Big Diesel is Amazon, CVN-76 is from the Ship's Store, I am a former TAO on USS RONALD REAGAN, you know missile keys and setting General Quarters over the 1MC.
Head gasket cleaning with chemical or scotch Brite should have done prior to any reassembly
Yeah, I think I'll pay someone to build my engine.
I'll do diy work up to a point. The turbos & inlets was enough of a hassle. Not to mention rear-end overhaul with all the alignment problems I dealt with later 😅
hi. I have a bmw f30 328i. I'm getting error codes. P0012, p0015, P0172
any idea what parts needs to be changed?
Timing chain probably bearings, where you at we can give you up to $3k for the car.
@@igotaction thanks for the reply. I'm also getting codes 130308, 120408, 133B04, 133E10, 130108.
is it possible the valve tronic motor not working
@@zunaids4036 they don't fail often but the timing chains do, you are probably out of time, that is first thing to check
@@igotaction thanks. I'm in South Africa. you won't be able to buy my car. thanks for the offer.
I noticed at 17 minutes in you removed the locking oil pump tool. Is it that you don't use it to torque the intake and exhaust gears and just use the timing kit to lock the camshafts and the front gear wheel along with the TDC lock and oil pump lock or do you also lock the flywheel as well? I am at this point currently so just wanna be sure.
Love your channel
What chassis is this for ? I just got a Beamer 😭
N20 was F series chassis with 28i so 228, 328, 428, 528, x3 28i etc.
good afternoon......the Crankshaft for the N20 engine can be rectified
Do you have the link to that gasket remover?
Mercedes part # 010-989-90-71 or you can look up Loctite SF7200
Wished you spent more time showing the valvtronic thats a bit of a difficult task
What engine is this?
What torque wrench are you using?
Icon that is mine, $360
Great content 👍
I've quite enjoyed your channel over the last few years. Especially your n54 content
I've built a few engines myself and I've always used Mahle bearings and Hastings rings. Never had a problem. I understand that they don't always make Euro stuff but just my insights!
Kindly
I love RUclips ❤
first time BMW owner love your content!!!! thank you!!!
How do you break in the engine after such a rebuild with new bottom end
Where is this located?
Where is what located?
send this to your friend who neglect their car and turned it into a non-runner 🤣
Also what happened to the Nissan 240 w/ N20?
WHERE CAN I BUY THE BEARINGS, I NEED X2 YELLOW/RED, X2 VIOL/BLUE FOR THE CONN RODS, AND CRANKSHAFT LOWER X4 BLUES, AND 1 LOWER YELLOW? I already have upper crankshaft bearings THANKS so much!
The dealer
How much did you pay for all the parts?
Where can I get that tool to put the pistons in the block?
Where is the best place is to buy a rebuild kit?
Please talk a bit more about the plastic timing guides. They are the main cause of failures in these and other BMW engines. I see you are using plastic guides again but they look like a different plastic. Are these much more durable than the OEM ones? Wouldnt it be better to use steel guides? Yes they might be noisier at first but last more than 100k miles no? What are the options available. Thanks.
These were the new redesigned guides from BMW. They sold them in a kit for a while that was dirt cheap like $120 for EVERYTHING.
What makes the white measurement marks on the crankshaft? Did you add special grease to the bearings?
Plastic guage for measuring bearing oil clearance
I just rebuilt my n26 engine. It was my first engine. It drove great for 20 miles and now I have tons of metal flakes in the oil I flush the oil 5 times. I am Getting a ticking sound like it’s in The oil pan. Is it possible that my oil pump / balance shaft is eating its self?
It probably ran a bearing, your balance shaft usually starts with a whining sound that is often mistaken for turbocharger or alternator bearing noise.
It was the oil pump balance shaft assembly. I dropped the pan and replaced with a good used assembly. Ticking sound is gone. No more metal in the engine. Already driven about 2000 miles.
Did you make sure the stickers were pulled of the timing chain guides? I have seen a balance shaft destroyed when the sticker falls off and gets sucked into the pick up tube
16:27 17:20 not the plastic timing chain 😭😭😭
only channel I turn off my adblocker for
How many hp that gives the car ??
Where can someone find a spec sheet for this?
Great video. Not sure i have the space in my garage. But it didn't seem like you had to use a lot of customized tools. WOuld it be possible to rebuild a damaged N20 that had jumped time or are all those engines toast?
Yes it is probably rebuildable however the valves minimum have damage. The pistons, cylinders and head could also be damaged.
