My lack of knowledge about weather is what scares me most about getting started in this sport. Can’t say how much I appreciate these videos. So good at what you do! Looking to start school in March. If you find yourself passing through Midland TX I would extremely happy to buy you all the tacos and beer you can handle. I have a pretty good LZ on my property as well cough cough
I got into this sport to paramotor but after my first hour long free flight during training, it totally changed my perspective on the sport. I still intend to get a motor but I want to get as proficient in free flight as I can before adding it. Just returned from Valle de Bravo for the first time and would have loved to see this right before I went. I can't thank you enough for all the info you put out there. Makes me and others fly much safer!! Thanks Kyle!
Thank you so much for this! I just made my first free flight from regionals at Crestline in San Bernadino yesterday! So stoked to be in the air finally!!! (Shout out to flywithjordan paragliding! You're awesome!) This video really helps me with Xcskies!!! You rule Kyle'o! I hope to fly with you some day!
I appriciate the knowledge you drop in your videos....i dont know what "all dem fancy wurds meenz" but i do get the "gust" of it lol. ;) I've been waiting to get my paramotor videos fix and you all finally got new ones out :) looking foward to finishing my training!
Great work Kyle me n the missus really enjoyed this info :-) Thanks. Would be great to see some stuff on Mountain Flying/Mountain weather some day ;-) Much Love From NZ
I have really come to appreciate motor thermaling practice especially after a bunch of bombing out earning my P2 last year. Im chasing P3 hard this season. I look forward to seeing you up on the mountain again this year and watching those PG vlogs. - Cory
Hey Kyle...I love you sharing your weather intel with all your followers (me included) . As a meteorologist (NWS), It impresses me you've got the depth of knowledge that you do- it's GREAT!!! Here is a link to some of the specifications of the different models used by XCSkies (I use it before EVERY flight). www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/mmb/cguastini/meg/table.html You made me laugh when you called the HRRR the Hi-Rez Rapid Repeat. It's actually the Rapid REFRESH. A couple other insignificant corrections: It's runs 24X a day (only once an hour - not every 15 min). Plus, it is not a "convective thermal forecasting model". It does do that, but so do all the other models; they just use different schemes of physics. When looking for thermal generators, look for surfaces that would heat the most, surrounded by ground that would heat less. Black, bare, dry, rough ground heats more (think walking barefoot on that piece of ground). The cotton field is too light and reflects heat. BTW...have you set up point forecasts in your XCSkies profile? They are very helpful, and let you see a meteorgram (time/hight graph) of the wind speed and direction, thermal strength and timing, top of lift, thermal index (buoyancy to shear). etc.. It saves a load of time, and provides better visuals. And for everybody else, when you are looking at thermal strength (ft/min), you have to remember to subtract your sink rate to see if it's really strong enough to keep you up, or provide lift. Another Awesome drop Kyle O.
Now you know my secrets, lol. I've been comparing these models to the actual conditions for years. It's pretty amazing sometimes just how accurate the predictions are! Seen a few misses to, but mostly good to go.
I think any amount of hot air is a thermal, however, in zero to 3 mph winds, the thermals would be weak to none existant or with very little lift power, now if the winds were let say 8 to 10, I'm sure you would have got a great lift because there's an actual substance to heat up, AIR, and plenty of it, Thanks for the tutorial on xc skys. learned alot,
Great video! ! Don't forget that you need to subtract your wings average sink rate with the lift of the day. Wing Sink rate 1.5 and lift is 4. (lift minus wing sink) you're looking at 2.5 in flight lift/climbs. It's like when you say 0's on your vario are lift. It is because lift is 1.5 and your wing sink rate is 1.5 they balance out. That's probably why the day seams less then what you see on xc ski. Got to account your average wing sink rate. With motor you can probably add more sink haha fly safe my friend!
Spot on Kyle'O! Great stuff. Oh, forgot to say.....more like this. Love these vids....thermal chasing.....when you don't want them they are out to kill you. When you do want them...yeah who's Cupid now?! 😂
@@GamingAmbienceLive I've got a ton of free wx apps but none of them show lift/sheer or vertical speeds. I know you can calculate lapse rates but XC Skies seems to have a ton of info at your fingertips. More than I've seen anywhere else.
american models aren't precise anyway, European ones are more precise, thats how Europe correctly predicted the movement of the hurricane few years ago, and american models all failed to predict it correctly, so id take it with a grain of salt I would suggest talking to pilots or glider operators to see where they get their info from
Woohoo! Free flight! Good for you man, not sure how many motor guys cross over into free flight and thermalling - any of your buddies do it as well? Ever do straight up paragliding, no motor? That’s how I started. Went to Mexico a month ago where I finally learned to thermal.
Why is your XC Skies time off set to -5. Shouldnt it be -6 for Louisiana or am i missing something? Im in MST and mine is set to -7. Anyway, great video! I am new to paramotoring and appreciate all your videos and information. Thanks.
Good info. But when u was in that median and so close to the cars you are braver then i ever want to be. Dont want to be a distraction so ill stay out of the way for them. But good flight. sorry i dont ever complain or critique you so forgive me. Haha always enjoy your vids. Peace
Well, most gliders descend at about 300 fpm, so if it's only 400 up, your climb will be only 100fpm. High is relative to the day, anything 500 and up is doable with the proper skills.
In one of your past videos, I heard you say something about wanting the google satellite to fly over and take a photo of your name in the yard, well, that has not happened, but I did notice that the satellite that Apple gets their photos from did capture it. so if you have an Apple device, check out Apple Maps.
Information like this is indispensable to new pilots like myself. Please continue to produce high quality videos. Much love from Slovakia.

Crazy that some folks believe the falt earth stuff in 2020. Love your videos and also the fact that you didnt call out any stupidity on that subject.

Great video man! Old hang glider pilot turn newbie ppg pilot...this great info for new and old pilots. Would love more of these.

Enjoyed the tutorial on XC Skies.
Awesome video. Thanks for the lesson that day!
Thanks for the lesson Kyle O! Always learning from you buddy!
I've watched your channel so long I almost understood what you were talking about. :-)

Man I got the fever bad!
Grats on your 6000th !! keep those up! they are so informative and fun!
Kyle, Killer INTRO Music. ^i^ Love the Skies.
This is an amazing video man, thanks.

Good stuff right here. I’ve had the XC skies subscription but never really knew how to use if for free flight.

Thumbs up as always Kyle. I think it's good to be able to harvest thermal energy and think like a bird:)
Happy new year.

Hope you guys had a great day at Spring Hill! Ask n u shall receive!!! Thanks for the next installment!!
Many of those really low days can have a very narrow altitude of soarable conditions. It might have been soarable higher.
Been Jonesing for some content man!!
This might be a bit silly idea, but has anyone ever tried taking a thermal cam with them and seeing what parts of the ground are warmer than others?
Thank you!
Ok I guess I gotta have XC Skies subscription now.....
there are multiple other such services for free without any subscriptions, one such example is Ventusky

Super educational- Thanks Kyle!
Very informative. Looks like you tend to turn right when catching thermals, why is that?
Motor torque makes it easier, I go both ways when no motor.

I've done both for 5 seasons now, but typically only make videos while motoring. Planning on freeflight vlogging this year.
@@kyleoglee YES! More free flight please!
No thumbs downer man on this one!
Hey Kyle. Did you catch any of that truck's wake as you came back up between the bridges? 17:30
I didn't.

Ur allowed to fly around that low? I’m amazed!! (I fly gliders).
Looks like a handy tool... shame it has sweet FA data for Australia! Doh!!

Someone showed me this about a month ago. I use Google stuff for most of my internet pursuits.
No Friday night live stream this week, was hoping it would become a regular thing? Informative video though.
My personal schedule is highly variable. It's tough to schedule things like that, but there will be more live coming.
