The Qibla (direction of prayer) was changed because the heart of Prophet Muhammad PBUH was inclined towards Makkah and he liked looking towards its direction after he migrated to Madinah. Allah mentions about this in the second chapter of the Quran that He has heard the prayer of his Prophet PBUH and the ruling was decreed to change the direction of the prayer. There is also a Masjid which is famous for having two qiblas. It is called Masjid al-Qiblatayn. It is situated in Madinah.

Initially Prophet Muhammad (s) used to pray facing towards Al-Aqsa masjid [Temple Mount] for a few years, but later Allah, in His divine wisdom, commanded Prophet Muhammad (s) and the Muslims to change their Qibla towards Kaaba [Makkah]. And all this is mentioned in Quran. By the way, Kaaba is the first/ oldest Qibla built by first Prophet Adam, and later after few thousands of years, it was rebuilt by Prophet ibraheem at the same place [Makkah].

13:34 Actually the exact reason was, the Mecca was a holy place to the Arabs that time. In the early days of Islam, by Allah's command, he prayed facing the Al-Aqsa Mosque. But Muhammad's wish and desire was to pray facing the Kaaba. So when he was in Makkah he used to stand parallel in prayer as if facing the Kaaba and Masjid Aqsa. But when the Muslims migrated to Madinah , there was no more opportunity to place the Kaaba in Al-Aqsa while praying. Because Madinah was located north of Makkah. Jerusalem is located north of Madinah. As a result, there was no opportunity for Muhammad to turn towards Mecca during the prayer. Kaaba is also the first man-made house in the history of the world. [3] Muhammad was very upset because of this. He always felt that he could not honor this first house of God built by Abraham. Because of this feeling, he did not pray to Allah to change the Qiblah. But when it was difficult not being able to pray facing Mecca, he would look at the sky. Prophet Muhammad(pbug) was praying approximately 15,16 months towards Jerusaleem (Tomb of rock or Shaam). It was before the revelation of Chapter -Al Baqarah (Quran) and with this revolution Allah Rabbul Al Amin guided Rasoolullah to face towards Mekkah's Qibla , As in Surah Baqara Allah guided Abraheem and his son Ismail To worship in that particular place wher Ibraheem was guided to place A Heavenly stone , and to be the center of worship. And In Revelation Surah Baqara Rasoolullah was guided by Almighty about this thing. After that The Direction Was Changed. Allah is The All knowing. The only worthy of Worship and praise. As far as I know, only in Makkah are non-Muslims not allowed entry to Al Aqsa Mosque. However, all holy places are not restricted in our past traditions. The Islamic capital of Madina itself was visited by many officials who were non-Muslims in the 7th century to meet the Caliphs.

Actually the exact reason was, the Mecca was a holy place to the Arabs that time.
In the early days of Islam, by Allah's command, he prayed facing the Al-Aqsa Mosque. But Muhammad's wish and desire was to pray facing the Kaaba. So when he was in Makkah he used to stand parallel in prayer as if facing the Kaaba and Masjid Aqsa. But when the Muslims migrated to Madinah , there was no more opportunity to place the Kaaba in Al-Aqsa while praying. Because Madinah was located north of Makkah. Jerusalem is located north of Madinah. As a result, there was no opportunity for Muhammad to turn towards Mecca during the prayer. Kaaba is also the first man-made house in the history of the world. [3]
Muhammad was very upset because of this. He always felt that he could not honor this first house of God built by Abraham.
Because of this feeling, he did not pray to Allah to change the Qiblah. But when it was difficult not being able to pray facing Mecca, he would look at the sky.
As a result, the year after the Hijrah in Madinah, Allah revealed the verse to Muhammad ordering the change of Qibla. [

The direction for praying namaz changed from Jerusalem to Mecca because before the last prophet of Islam Muhammad (SM) pbuh , Muslim used to follow the teachings of Ibrahim(AS) pbuh and His teaching were encrypted in the holy book before Quran where Muslims Qibla or direction was Jerusalem stated , but after the last prophecy of Islam teachings got updated to Quran where the direction of Muslim prayers was stated which is Mecca.💯

Actually we believe that Khana e Kabaa was the first place built for human beings to pray and later Prophet Ibrahim n his son Prophet Ismael rebuild kabaa. Arabs are considered to be the children of Ismael and they lived in Makka n used to considered kaba their holy place. but later they started idol worship so when Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) started preaching Islam, he used to pray in the direction of Jerusalem because it was the land of prophets and holiest place. But later Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) was ordered by Allah to turn his face towards kabaa to pray. In Quran, it was told to Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) to turn his face to kaaba and also mentioned that kaaba was the place first created for mankind for worship. Also, this changing of qibbla symbolized that previously, jews were considered to lead people to Allah, but changing the direction of qibba now symbolized that this responsibities have taken away from jews and given to muslims.
Also I need to mention here, that no where in Quran is mentioned that non- muslims can't come inside a masjid. This is only for Makkah and Madina. If they have not allowed to enter masjid ul aqsa, this is their wrong believe and a Pakistani muslim i can only be sorry for that. But I welcome to please visit Pakistan, we will take u inside any masjid u wish to visit.

Meanwhile, due to corrupting of Deen by the Jews and Christians, they started to pray towards Jerusalem. Since, Muhammad was a leader of that sequel so in the beginning he also prayed towards Jerusalem but after receiving revelation from Allah, returned back to Kabaa.

(2:143) Thus We have made you [true Muslims - real believers of Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a just (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) be a witness over you. And We made the Qiblah (prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which you used to face, only to test those who followed the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) from those who would turn on their heels (i.e. disobey the Messenger). Indeed it was great (heavy) except for those whom Allah guided. And Allah would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem). Truly, Allah is full of Kindness, the Most Merciful towards mankind.

Prophet Muhammad(pbug) was praying approximately 15,16 months towards Jerusaleem (Tomb of rock or Shaam). It was before the revelation of Chapter -Al Baqarah (Quran) and with this revolution Allah Rabbul Al Amin guided Rasoolullah to face towards Mekkah's Qibla , As in Surah Baqara Allah guided Abraheem and his son Ismail To worship in that particular place wher Ibraheem was guided to place A Heavenly stone , and to be the center of worship. And In Revelation Surah Baqara Rasoolullah was guided by Almighty about this thing. After that The Direction Was Changed. Allah is The All knowing. The only worthy of Worship and praise. And Rasoolullah is the messengerof One True God. (PBUH)

As far as I know, only in Makkah are non-Muslims not allowed entry to Al Aqsa Mosque. However, all holy places are not restricted in our past traditions. The Islamic capital of Madina itself was visited by many officials who were non-Muslims in the 7th century to meet the Caliphs.

Temple mount is a place where Abraham talked with God and scrificed a sheep. That area is also a place where Jesus used to pray and taught his teaching to his disciples.
