    How much money can I make as a programmer?
    A lot, well, depends.
    So let’s do this, some people are gonna watch this and get excited. Some are gonna be pissed. Some will say this guy’s full of shit. To the rest of you I say, what up?
    Look. Facts and facts. I don’t make them. I’m just telling you what’s happening. I’m gonna give you some numbers yo. By the all the numbers I’m giving here are US market only.
    The short answer is entry level developers college degree not required, but with some kind of training, maybe with ColorCode, can start from 40, 50, sometimes 60k. Experienced programmers can go up to 140, 150, 160.
    Career advancement after is up to you. We live in a capitalistic economy where you can essentially go up as far as you want. People have done it. But those numbers depend on A LOOOOT of things. So let me explain.
    According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A government agency. The average salary of all workers in the US in 2015 (I know it’s not from this year but it’s the last one they had ok?)... anyway, average of all workers’ income was $36,300. This is for all jobs in the US. You know what it was for Computer Programmers? $79,530. That’s more than double. This is big.
    www.bls.gov/oo...
    Job outlook was 17% faster than the average in the US, which means employment is growing fast and there’s gonna be a lotta jobs out there. Even more than today.
    Fine, those are just numbers and that’s just an average and I don’t care. Or they’re not from this year. Or bla bla bla. Here’s the bottom line.
    What I’m talking about here is the result of basic economics. Supply and demand. If you have something rare that a lot of people want, the value of that thing is gonna go up. Like gold, or diamonds or whatever. Because more people want it, than the number of that thing available. Why do you get minimum wage if you work at Starbucks? Because almost any adult has the skills necessary to make a cup of coffee. Except me apparently. Those skills are not rare or unique.
    What you get with software development during our time is you get a very unique skill that very few people have but you also get massive demand, meaning we need a lot of people who can code.
    And that’s why you can make more money as a programmer.
    You know I’ve talked a lot about the growth of software and how it’s become a universally acceptable tool to help us do our day to day stuff, from work to entertainment to dating and so on. It’s everywhere. So the demand keeps going up. Which means the demand for engineers goes up and up. Which means those jobs are gonna pay more and pay. It won’t be forever. But it is true for now.
    Salary average for Junior developer in the US is $59,296 according to glassdoor.
    www.glassdoor....
    I don’t think that’s 100% accurate based on what I’ve seen. But it’s not far from the truth.
    Unless something crazy unpredictable happens, I can tell you in big cities in the US, if you are really good at something specific, whether it’s JavaScript, mobile development, or even if you JUST wanna do styling with CSS,
    don’t look at me like that CSS architects, we cherish you, how’s IE10 doing? Hehe I like CSS
    with only a few years of experience you can make 6 figures, meaning over a 100k. But remember I said ‘really good at something specific’.
    Oh yeah Sina, of course, if you’re good at anything you can make money. True. But the difference is in how long it takes to get there. Take medical for example. To really specialize and become a super badass doctor you need to invest about a decade of your life, more or less + a pretty sizable amount of college money, debt, and lack of sleep from what I hear. Tremendous respect to my doctor friends, you guys are at a different level. But the reality is you can easily get a job in software development in a matter of months if you work hard and know your shit.
    Bottom line: If you do your homework and enjoy it, in only a few months you can make enough to support yourself and more. If you continue to grow and learn the latest technologies, and you can deliver quality code and you’re a cool person to work with, you will make more than you need within a few short years. All that, while you got your headphones on and listen to your music. Very few jobs allow us to do that and make this much. From there you can only go up. Not too many glass ceilings in technology, and in the world of programming that might even apply to women. And that’s a very good thing.
    From NY with love. Peace.

    Learn salary negotiation tactics. It’s really important to your career.
    Starting wages for a junior engineer in Silicon Valley are about 100k. I’ve seen offers for senior engineers at 80k. That’s garbage and they’re going to have to settle for some over seas developer.
    Starting salary with no degree 100k. Some bootcamps (not college) average about 115k per student very famously Airbnb once paid a brand new engineer 260k. It’s a great story. Look it up.
    With a year of experience you should be close to 120k.
    With more the sky is the limit. At some companies experienced engineers are getting well over 300k.
    There is a trick to these salaries though.
    What are the stock options? They’re going to offer you stock. Most companies (the VAST majority) have stock that is worth nothing and never will be. At the few companies where it is worth a lot the value of stocks will make your effective salary jump!
    They know this, so you have to stay at a company for a number of years to actually get the option to buy the stocks at a given rate. It’s a gamble at most companies. If you’re at a place like Airbnb or google or meta that stock is only going up. So, it’s a solid option. It’s more complex.
    There is usually retirement matching. This is free money and can be another 5k bump.
    You can negotiate for more money for your commute or your home office. Lots of extra little things. Often these can come from different pools of money that company has. So, they may be unable to offer you more than 130k because of a project budget. But, giving you a 10k signing bonus may be fine because that comes out of a different budget.
    Often to get your worth you end up having to jump from company to company. You can get hired at 100k then do well and get that max percentage 5k bump. Great. Then they hire a new engineer with one year of experience (same as you now) and pay them 120k. Now you’re down 15k per year. This process keep going. Second year now you’re at about 111k. Hooray! But they hire a new engineer with 2 years of experience in at 135k (or whatever).
    This is why the average tech worker stays for 1-3 years.
    Per year my salary growth was 100k to 135k to 170k. This is while living in Silicon Valley. Salary is adjusted down for areas where it’s less expensive to live (which can actually put more money in your pocket each year, don’t be blinded by a big number).
    Salary isn’t everything. A good work culture and a great team mean a lot more than just getting a big paycheck. You want to feel appreciated on payday. You also want to be excited to turn on your machine and get to work every single day! 👍

      ColorCode I don’t know if you’ve heard of Roblox, but it’s basically a gaming platform that I’ve been using and playing on for the past 8 years. I got into game development and I’ve found myself getting better and better at programming. It uses the programming language Lua. The platform has its own wiki, which tells me how to do a specific task, like removing a player from the game.
      I wanted to know... what are the most commonly used programming languages in video game development? I want to be an employee at a game development company and program. I want to ensure that I can take care of myself.
      And I also want to know where to start with learning those languages? Would it be a textbook, RUclips videos or wiki articles?
      Thanks.

      @@gibbonbasher8171 I'm not a gamer or a game developer but I can talk to you as a software engineer. More importantly than the language is the foundation. So many people fall into specific frameworks and tools without getting a strong computer science background. (By the way this doesn't mean you have to study computer science for 4 years and drop 100k. You can learn the fundamentals yourself). So I would say if you get the basics right you can learn any language/framework to build games and you'll be highly sought after by employers.

    I have some questions what is the best programming language to start off with in a young age of 13 and is html, css and JavaScript a good idea? And when do people usually start freelancing? I know this comment is so late I’m just soooo dang confused with things and I just need some help thank you
    Edit: oh and how much of a difference it is to be a web dev and a game dev and is web dev for me a good idea?

    • @ColorCodeio

      It all depends on where your interest are. And I say that because you can basically learn anything you want online these days. So it's less about what's better, it's more about what's better for you and to you. If you don't know where your interests are I would recommend starting with web development as it touches on a wide range of skills and paradigms that will help you decide where to specialize in a few years.

    That's right.. So all the concern about visas and such and not having enough programmers... It defiantly brings thr averages down !

    • @ColorCodeio
      @ColorCodeio  7 лет назад

      Having more programmers available will bring down the average, just as it is with anything else. But there are potential changes proposed to the H1-b visa which will make it harder for programmers to come to the US which will oversaturate the industry even more than it is today.

  • @alvadagansta
    @alvadagansta 6 лет назад

    Country-wide averages are misleading. Take Google for example. T3 (not senior) makes 110k, 50k stock, and 15% annual bonus, totaling roughly 175k a year. T5 (senior) at Google makes a little more than twice that, around 360k a year. "But Google is the exception" no, not really. FB, Amazon, Apple, and Netflix all pay very similarly to Google. Other big names in the industry (Microsoft, Snap, Uber) all pay almost as much as Google. Sure, that's not the average, but if you're a good software developer, the pay ceiling is really, really high

    • @ColorCodeio
      @ColorCodeio  5 лет назад +2

      Depends on your lifestyle :) But mostly it depends on your location, experience and the type of work. In most places 103k is a pretty good salary and can afford you a comfortable life, where I am, in New York City, it's not that high. Also, if you have several years of experience you could make much much more depending on what you bring to the table. Again, it depends on a lot of things but overall it's a great start and you should strive to make even more.
