  • When employment opportunities in Chicago’s manufacturing industry dried up, Robert Lyles turned to the justice system.
Now retired, Lyles told The Marshall Project about his time as a correctional officer and as assistant director of the Cook County Jail. In this installment of We Are Witnesses: Chicago, Lyles talks about how he adapted to working in a violent environment and the tools he uses to cope with work-related stress.

22 years (3 years federal 19 years county jail) you are absolutely right no one cares. Least of all your own agency BOP/Sheriff's Office. The people who care the least are the Command Staff.

In the bop you could have staff assaults and the inmates are out after lunch

I just searched PTSD for Corrections officers. I served 20 years in a max jail. I find these videos that came up insulting and NEVER! even came close to grasping the profession. Our what we walked thru everyday. I'm insulted that there is still to this day nothing and no one representing C.O.'s! This video is short and to the point. The others always want to bring in military work or past trauma... ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? 20 Plus years walking a jail/prison is more trauma than 99% of any American will see, feel, or experience! All these CO PSTD videos I saw today miss the damn mark as how I felt/live and my homies...Fuck,..Life on the inside is dirty, ugly, and your higher ups seem to work harder to undermine you then then the inmates do! I can tell Robert Lyles is a CO I would have been close friends with.

Have you by any chance come across anything decent online worth checking out for support?

Yea, I never really liked working under the command of this director. I never trusted him! I think many others would say the same. I'll leave it there...
