    Hi David,
    It is illegal to transport refilled DOT-39s. We have many resources on the subject:

    We produced a poster and video warning about the dangers of refilling these cylinders, as well as putting out a safety alert in 2014, notifying the general public about the safety hazard of refilling and transporting DOT 39s.

    I agree 100% the 20 pound tank is better. Having said that, You can buy brand new refillable propane 1 pound bottles, they are designed to be refilled. Safe and legal. Brand is Flame King. Pretty cool.

Is there some sort of hose connection to make 1 attachment at the big tank and a "splitter" or something to hook the two places the green tanks would go? Thanks.

    I have an Atwood 3 burner in pop-up that runs off tank that's plumbed to hook up. Question do I need a regulator on the adapter hose if I choose to use cook stove (portable) some place else? Thanks

    • @Wildersport
      @Wildersport  3 года назад

      Not familiar with the Atwood. But pop ups typically use one or two 20lb bbq tanks. You are effectively running off the same supply. So if the mfg used a regulator in the fuel line you should use one in an adapter hose.

      Are you talking about the silver tube on the right as you face the stove? That is the regulator that comes with the Coleman Propane stove. If you mean the black Hose, that is an old Coleman hose, the current model is amzn.to/3iN7Gou and features a plastic handwheel now making it more comfortable to use when cold.

      The metal pipe that comes out of the side of the stove that attaches to the hose is the regulator. I have a propane shower other than the Zodi that uses standard BBQ hoses and fittings and MUST use the hose with a regulator in it... I can connect a propane lantern via a distribution tree to the 20lb tank and no it does not require a regulator. It all depends on the appliance.

      The stove has a regulator. That is what that pipe with the knob on it is for, not just to make a connection to a bottle. And no filter needed. The Mr. Heater buddy heaters however DO need a filter.

Closer investigation you can see the where's that the hose has so in all actuality the hose that I bought from Walmart was bad. They told me they could not restock it or resell it so they were not going to replace it with the newer one and on top of that it wasn't even a product that they sold as far as the hose was the type of hose. So that's why it doesn't work it's because the hose I bought from Walmart somebody had returned it with thorough hose and Walmart restocked it for resale and with my luck I was a lucky person to buy a no good one pound to 20 lb propane conversion hose LOL life is good God is good amen 😎💯🤣

      William, Thank you for your feedback, however no I do not owe anyone refilling DOT39 cylinders any sort of apology. I made it rather clear that I was simplifying my statement in the video. Since you insist though please read on...
      Prior to making this video, I was tasked as part of my prior job role with creating safety presentations for our organization. Our group consisted of a variety of folks that enjoyed outdoor activities ranging from total newbies to folks that might have pretty much hiked the width and breadth of the continent over the decades and everything in between, so yes, Propane safety was a good topic. With the Mr. Heater adapters being found at our local Walmart it was a concern brought to my attention and so I did my research. Instead of trusting a 30 second Google search I investigated with the authoritative source. The United States Department of Transportation Public Affairs Office. Please feel free to reach out to the DOT and their public affairs office for further clarification if you need to. However I did indeed do my research. And yes to a very limited extent you are sort of correct. Yes it is legal to refill, but illegal to transport refilled 1lb propane canisters. I stand by my statement though as the most common use for 1lb cylinders is to be transported and used. Here is the body of email response I got from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

      @@Wildersport I can appreciate that DOT does not want these containers transported and that's creating a grey area by DOT on admission. I would not recommend transporting these devices per DOT, mainly because of wall thickness and the lack of a relief valve. They can be refilled for home use admittedly with some risk or one can purchase a certified 1 lb refillable canister from Flame King and transport them with the approval from DOT and that would be my recommendation.
