    Probably the most informative, accurate, concise tutorials I have ever seen on youtube. I mean you mentioned you couldn't get the camera to show what you were seeing and you didn't even attempt it with the camera shaking around and all the other annoying things you see in other videos. You drew a simple to understand diagram and it was well drawn at that! Great video. I bought a used vintage scope and the adjustment was WAY off. This will help immensely to understand my problem. Thanks.

      +Ryan Carroll Thank you very much Ryan. I have not been doing review and stuff on RUclips long and am learning. I catch flack the most over the length of some of the videos. I feel that I need to cover every aspect that I can. If folks are here to learn something, might as well cover as much as I can for them. In this particular video, I couldn't get the camera to look through the scope at all, so had to improvise. If you watch my reviews on the night vision or some other things, you will see the shaky, it is unavoidable sometimes and unlike Hicock45 or some of those other guys, I do not have fancy production equipment or a crew, pretty much just me, myself and I. Again, thanks for the compliment and have a great day brother.

    I just checked my scope with this method after using the old method and it was close. Windage was only a few clicks off but elevations was about 3/4 turn. It was kinda hard to get the right eye relief without total darkness in scope but it seems to work great. Thanks for sharing.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  7 лет назад

      I appreciate the kind words. Yes, you are dead on, getting right amount of light into the objective and the right eye relieve is a bit tricky. Sadly, it is hard to explain how to get it spot on every time because each scope is a little different. But, as you use the method, you will be able to adjust all of that pretty quickly just by what you see.

    I just bought a scope for my pellet rifle. I put it on and attempted to sight it in at 22-25 yards and ran out of down adjustment and it’s still shooting 6”-8” high. I just reset mine and I’m hoping this will help with the issue. Great video btw.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  2 года назад +1

      wow, that is a lot! not sure this will help but two things... first, there is a new version of this video out and so i would highly recommend you look that one up. in fact it should be linked in the description of this old video. second, with it being that much off, i would advise you check and double check the installation of the scope. it may not be seated in the rings properly, the rings or base may not be seated properly, etc. it does not take but things being off a hair as far as everything being flush and level to throw things way, way off. let us know if you get it sorted out with a follow up on what you found.

      Well I found the problem. Lol. I put another scope on and had the same problem. I got to looking at the gun (Crosman Shockwave .22) and it turns out the barrel somehow got bent upwards and was causing it to shoot high. I bent the barrel back as straight as I could and tried it again and boom on paper. Adjusted the scope and put three in the same hole at 27 yards. I just knew for sure it was the scope. SMH.

    The glass is a great idea!

  • @jiwilliamshouston
    @jiwilliamshouston 8 лет назад +1

    Thanks for showing this, I have a scope that is giving me fits and I couldn't determine if it was the rings, the scope mount or barrel mounting. When I zero the scope on a collimator I'm almost out of windage adjustment. I'm going to get a mirror and glass and try this to bring the scope back to center and see where that puts me. I understand that counting clicks between the stops might be a false reading. This is on a long range setup for an aftermarket 10/22 receiver and barrel with a Bushnell 5-15 3200 series scope.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  8 лет назад +1

      It could help by getting you to a more central starting point. Going long range on a .22 may require an elevated rail too. Counting clicks does work ok but as springs & gears wear it can get off kilter a bit.

  • @rlknight57
    @rlknight57 5 лет назад +1

    I have a Bushnell Sportview 4X32 I tried this on. I noticed because of parallax the relationship of the crosshairs can change quit a bit just by how I look through the scope.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  5 лет назад

      you have to be looking through dead center, for sure... not sure what you are saying here exactly but you should see two sets of crosshairs, even if they move the gap between them should remain the same... are you saying that is not the case?

    • @rlknight57
      @rlknight57 5 лет назад +1

      If you move your head up, down, or side to side I can make the double image I see of the reticles get closer to lining up or farther apart just as I would by turning the adjustment knobs. I understand I need to look dead center through the scope but how do I know when I am doing that?

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  5 лет назад +1

      @@rlknight57 that is a good question and other than just knowing, not sure i have an answer for that. i have never really experienced the particular issue you describe. have you tried adjusting the eyepiece to see if that makes the issue better or worse, maybe you are dealing with a focus issue of some sort. also, it is quite possible ones eyesight or prescription glasses could come into play as well. this is a weird one. sadly, this tip came from an old man in a gun shop and he has been dead and gone for years, so asking him isn't an option. that said, this video has always and continues to get a lot o comments so maybe someone else can chime in with advice.

      I heard some guys discuss truing up a scope once but you were the first to show how to do it . So yes sir , I did pick up something I liked ,subscribed, & hit bell . Once in a while you might read something that may be a help . Been taking them apart and trying to get back working for about 57 years . Be back to see watch you'er doing .

    I bought a scope used that has 18 mils of elevation adjustments. I put it on my rifle and after I zeroed it I only have 5 mils left. So I bought a 20 MOA base and now I have about 10.5 mils of elevation. Do you think if I use this method it could help me get more elevation out of my scope?

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  7 лет назад

      No, this only re centers the adjustments it will not give you any extra. How much elevation does the scope have in total? Something just does not sound right there.

    To keep it short, I bought a brand new rifle, put a scope I already had on it, scopes in great condition, went to range, could not get scope sight in, bore sighted an all, it seemed I couldn’t get anymore leftward adjustments do you think I should give this a go?

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  6 лет назад

      this really won't fix an issue where this lack of adjustment. how much adjustment you have is determined by the specs on the scope that said, this will get you back to a true mechanical zero and may allow you to easier determine the issue, be it rings, mount, scope or even a firearm issue like a boogered up crown.

    I just bought this scope. I used your mirror method to factory center the scope. I found that the mirrored image of the crosshairs are upside down from the actual etched crosshairs. Is this a factory defect or what am I doing wrong?

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  7 лет назад

      Oh, WOW! I have never ran into that before, very interesting. I am sure it has to do with how the glass is set up in the scope. What brand and model scope is it? I will take a look and see.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  7 лет назад

      Luke, after reading about the specs on that scope, I am all but positive it has to do with the way it is constructed on the side. The manual talks about "The scope includes a Spherical Structure to control the interaction between the inner and outer tubes of the scope, which provides long lasting reliability in these interaction and ensures the reticle would not rotate when adjusting. This smart design makes the scope shockproof and provides more precise windage and elevation adjustment." That is likely the culprit here.

    Regarding the glass used to add diffused light; what glass did you use? Are there any types that would effect the process like light distortion?
    Enjoyed the video.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  4 года назад

      so, there is a reason there is a new version of this... i wished more would click the end screens, links, or read the thumbnail, the updated version contains a lot more information than this old version. that said, the glass is really only used to allow enough light into the scope for this process to work. scopes need light, right, so just sitting the objective on a mirror gets you nothing but black. i believe the glass i used here was just from cheap picture frames, nothing fancy.

    My scope will not center. The cross hairs move but they will not line up. They adjusters are at their limit but they are still not lining up. Does this mean the scope is bad ? You say there are other methods but you do not list them

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  8 лет назад

      do you have it set to lowest power? objective set to infinity? is it a first focal plane scope? the other method is to count total clicks, then adjust 1/2 way. it is possible your scope is off somehow, lower quality scopes do not typically return to zero very well.

    • @howieskully594
      @howieskully594 8 лет назад +1

      I believe it is no good. I went to the manufacturer channel to make sure i was adjusting it correctly and found 2 other guys had the exact same problem. Manufacturer confirmed with them the scopes were bad and they both returned their scopes for refunds. On phone now with scope dealer.

  • @ezridr1234
    @ezridr1234 8 лет назад +1

    I've discovered a slight problem here. Not with the method described in this video but rather the scopes themselves.
    I was aware of this method before coming here but decided to search this method out in hopes I'd learn something new i wasn't already aware of, and low and behold badaboom! i did.
    I learned something new from the post below talking about turning the power down and parallax to infinity.
    While setting the parallax i noticed my shadow reticle is moving around substantially, and I'm talking a LOT of movement.
    Anyone else see this problem, or does this mean i have a bad misaligned scope? Am i doing something wrong? can't see how but none the less i figure the click counts can't possibly be equally correct using this method if the shadow retical is shifting all over the place by simply turning the focus dial around?
    Anybody have some input on this problem, does it even matter?
    suggestions etc?
    My shadow reticle begins low right but as i spin the parallax dial eventually my reticle is too left almost lined up with the actual retical. So that being said there's no way this method will work for me. So I'm going to run thru the counting method and then this method to see how much of any difference i come up with. Maybe setting everything back to the lowest and or max reaches will eliminate this issue, idk.
    Thanks.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  8 лет назад

      Once reset with power down and parallax to infinity, there should not be an issue. If it is not a first focal plane scope, then some deviation is normal when making these adjustments.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  8 лет назад

      You do make a good point on "counting clicks". This is simply a way to get "close". If you are going to put it on another rifle then re zero to that rifle anyway, being at complete zero is not necessarily a huge thing. But, this is quick and it can keep you from being way, way off paper.

    • @ezridr1234
      @ezridr1234 8 лет назад +1

      CloverTac CloverTac Define first local plane for me? if possible in here.
      And yes it's going on another rifle, reason i need to square it back up is because i had it mounted on an air rifle temporally trying to rule out another scope or the rifle itself being bad.
      i had to use risers to mount it to that gun and because of how they fell, the scope was way out of square. at one point i had to dial it right till she bottomed out. i fixed that problem to the minimum by loosening and tightening the mounting bolts. gave me just enough room to get the reticle off that side to be able to shoot the thing.
      Anyhow, my Damm scope on my colt AR crapped out on me couple weeks ago so I'm moving this one over to it temporarily until my new order shows up. The top turret popped the ball and spring, pissed me off giving what i paid for that one.
      Oh btw, i wasn't able to use this method on it turns out. just couldn't trust it. The scope ended up being 300clicks on the horizontal plane and 150 vertical. this equated out to about 4.5 turns of the dial, after applying the mirror the horizontal was only 1-1/4 turns in as suppossed to 2-1/4.
      So anywho,,
      thanks for the reply and happy shooting! Keep it safe.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  8 лет назад

      I am sure you can find much more detailed info on first focal plane scopes either here or with a quick Google search. It can be an involved topic. The short version would be this...... First, FFP scopes are fairly new and they are more expensive. With your traditional plane scopes, the reticle sits towards the rear of the optic and as a result does not change when the scope is adjusted. Therefore, that reticle is only accurate on one particular setting. With a FFP, the reticle sits on the first focal plane, so all subsequent adjustments affect the reticle so that it remains accurate throughout all adjustments.

      CloverTac yeah i felt stupid after asking that one. spoiled by texting to much i guess. So yeah i looked it up and checked it all out. makes sense to me, I've just never seen that pointed out when shopping for scopes in stores and whatnot. • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  6 лет назад

      this will not help you, it sounds like you have reached maximum elevation. this can be for several reasons, cheaper scopes typically do not offer nearly as much adjustment as the more expensive ones. there could be a manufacturing issue with the scope. the scope could not be sitting level in the ring or on the mounts. and, finally, you are just trying to zero at such a range you are going to require a elevated MOA rail or mount. what scope are you using? what rings? what mount? what rifle? and at what distance do you want a zero?

    • @appalachiangunman9589
      @appalachiangunman9589 6 лет назад

      You may benefit from a larger main tube size if you don’t already have the biggest size, if you have a 1” tube you may do better with a 30mm tube. If you want to keep your same scope you may try using a lower mount/ring setup if possible, and as the gentleman before me commented you could try an elevated rail to give you some extra MOA value.

    One reason why I want to it's cuz I got a f****** antique Marlin model 400a made in Japan scope that's a complete mystery on who the hell the company wasn't made it and I can't find no info on it despite hours and hours of searching and I can't get a zero then so I want to take it back to Mechanical zero to be able to 0 perfectly again because I was able to before and I took the whole damn thing apart and cleaned it and I know I got the lenses in back correctly I just don't have the windage in the elevation set correctly and for being a more likely a cheap o scope from the 70s that came on the model 60 I have now and I pulled it off and put a 3 - 9 by 32 millimeter and just wanted to get this 4 by 32 millimeter scope re zero in cuz I'm thinking about going back to it

      that is a very good question! this was a trick i was told about by an old timer, so likely he had zero experience with red dot style optics. i have never tried it but would venture to say no because of the composition and mechanics of that type of optic... but may try it just to see and would say why not give it a whirl yourself.

    • @CloverTac
      @CloverTac  7 лет назад

      The whole trick to this is getting the right alignment through the scope and allowing right right amount of light through the objective. It is tricky because the eye relieve and amount of light an objective brings in is different depending on the brand, make and model of scope. As for why you want to reset, a good reason could be if you are transferring to another rifle. If you reset it to mechanical zero prior to mounting, then you will not be off paper near as much as the other way around. In turn you spend less time and waste less ammo getting sighted in.
