The group formed in 2000, and Adam Rupp (the beatboxer) was one of the two people, with his brother Chris, who started the group, in Minnesota. Over the years the membership changed, with Rob Lundquist, the bearded tenor, joining next, and Tim Foust, the low bass coming after. Austin Brown, the high tenor lead in this song, joined the group a few years later, and Chris Rupp, one of the founders of the group, left to pursue a solo career and picked Adam Chance to be his replacement. Adam Rupp and Rob Lundquist both live in Minnesota, while Tim Foust and Austin Brown are from Nashville. Adam Chance is from LA. But Tim is originally from Texas, Austin is from Georgia, and Chance is from Alabama.
Sorry to say but it is a rumour that Chris Rupp picked Chance as his replacement. Chris did an interview with reactor QoFy in August and said that he was not involved in the recruitment of Chance. They won the NBC show the Sing Off in 2013 the year after Pentatonix won (another incredible “a cappella’ group). They do sing country but they sing all genres of music. Tim, the bass, has a 5 octave range so he can sing bass all the way up to tenor. They can all sing and their beatboxer is amazing doing drums, harmonica, bugs and all kinds of sounds. Chance (back row with vest) was doing the “mouth harp” which sounds like a didgeridoo but isn’t. The beatboxer, Adam, can do a didgeridoo however. Try the Boyz II Men hit End of the Road by them…it’s so good. Also listen to Adam Rupp Drum Solo on you tube. He’s amazing.

They are the only known country vocal band, but also do a lot of R&B and pop covers as well. They also have a number of originals as well. They have a huge fan base known as Home Fries, and have nearly 150 videos and close to 400 million RUclips views. Since most band rely on instruments, they may have just one or two singers, but all of these guys can sing, beatbox, and make musical instrument sounds that gives their product a full and rich experience. I worked with Rob Lundquist's (no hat) Dad... They met in Mankato, Minnesota in 2013. They are a full on a cappella group and all of the instrument sounds you heard, are vocally made.

The versions recorded in the 60's during the folk music craze aren't at all like the current version, melodically. Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary... all recorded versions. While they're lyrically recognizable as the same song, they aren't, melodically. You're right, the Dan Tyminski version from O Brother Where Art Thou, with George Clooney lip syncing, is where this version seems to have settled out.

From what I gather Peter and the group turned to their Patreon fans and had them record themselves singing the song then send them in to be edited together. It's an old US folk song, which 1st appeared in s song book in 1913. The 1st recording was in 1927 which text + title are the ones which Home Free covered. Other artists were the Stanley Brothers in the 50's and later Bob Dylan, Joan Baez amongst others. The lyrics describes the hardships endured during the depression in the 1920's. During this period a lot of men were forced to leave their homesteads + farms to find work in the industrialized north of the USA. Since these people were poor they had no cars & the only possibility to get north was to hitch on a freight train. These people were also called Hobo's.

The Didgeridoo sound that you mentioned is actually being done by the use of a mouth harp. At the very end they actually show Adam Chance "Chance" for a few seconds making the sound. Most of the other "Beat Boxing" sounds are made by Adam Rupp "Adam" who is the back right for all the group shots. Then they pick up Austin Brown from GA. Chris decided he wanted a solo career so then they got Adam Chance ( who they just call Chance).
Home free was originally from a singing competition which they won. At least where they started gaining fame.They do a bunch of covers from a bunch of different genres but are mainly country. And yes they don't use instruments beyond their voices. You should do their "American Pie" cover ft Don McLean the guy who originally sang it 50 years ago. Amazing group. Before going full time they actually sang around Minnesota doing county fairs and such. But after winning the competition and getting the recording contract and winning the $100,000 then they went full time.

Since most band rely on instruments, they may have just one or two singers, but all of these guys can sing, beatbox, and make musical instrument sounds that gives their product a full and rich experience. Although there are other A Capella bands, there is no one like what Home Free does. Hope you do more HF. There is not one performance you won't like with them.

This style of music is known as Bluegrass and got started in the 1930's, and it came to prominence after world war 2. It's roots go back to folk music from rural southern states and the isolated communities in the Appalachian mountains.
I worked with Rob Lundquist's (no hat) Dad... They met in Mankato, Minnesota in 2013. They are a full on a cappella group and all of the instrument sounds you heard, are vocally made.
Their first performance was in 2000! All Mankato boys at that time. Later these southern boys joined in

I’m guessing the version you mean is the cover by Dan Tyminski, part of Union Station, from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. The song is from 1913, so no one these days has heard the “original” song. The first recording was around 1928.

Not only that, but the original doesn't sound anything like the current version. Nor does the 1928 Emry Arthur version. Nor the 1950s Stanley Brothers version, though you can tell it's getting there. The versions recorded in the 60's during the folk music craze aren't at all like the current version, melodically. Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary... all recorded versions. While they're lyrically recognizable as the same song, they aren't, melodically.
You're right, the Dan Tyminski version from O Brother Where Art Thou, with George Clooney lip syncing, is where this version seems to have settled out.
All the music is done with their voices too. The harmonica isn't actually a harmonica. He's using his mouth and nasal passage to make that sound. They're freaking amazing.

The main singer of this song, Austin Brown was performing on a cruise ship when the then band came on to perform. He was invited to join them and never looked back.
You mentioned them as a choir...to truly hear them as a choir look up the U2 cover I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by Peter Hollens feat. Home Free. From what I gather Peter and the group turned to their Patreon fans and had them record themselves singing the song then send them in to be edited together. This was during quarantine and the 6 guys were all at their homes, separated from each other...well, the resulting video is hard to describe, you just have to experience that beautiful bit of heaven for yourself.

It's an old US folk song, which 1st appeared in s song book in 1913. The 1st recording was in 1927 which text + title are the ones which Home Free covered. Other artists were the Stanley Brothers in the 50's and later Bob Dylan, Joan Baez amongst others. The lyrics describes the hardships endured during the depression in the 1920's. During this period a lot of men were forced to leave their homesteads + farms to find work in the industrialized north of the USA. Since these people were poor they had no cars & the only possibility to get north was to hitch on a freight train. These people were also called Hobo's.

The Didgeridoo sound that you mentioned is actually being done by the use of a mouth harp. At the very end they actually show Adam Chance "Chance" for a few seconds making the sound. Most of the other "Beat Boxing" sounds are made by Adam Rupp "Adam" who is the back right for all the group shots. The other members do help with other sounds, like Rob singing the "dum dum doo" part through most of the song.

This is one of very few songs which they use a looper station on when performing it live(and you can tell the beatboxer has a blast running it 😂) I really hope you check out the Home Free rabbit hole 😊 I hope you have fun! You can’t go wrong with any of their songs, they’re amazing. If you’d like a quick guide, you have:
Austin Brown: high tenor - the guy who started the lyrics first, long, curly, reddish hair - he’s from Tifton, Georgia and they met him when they were both performers on a cruise ship! (He was a theatrical singer, impressed them, and they eventually asked him to join - except with his Georgia accent back 😋 They feature his theatrical singing in Bring Him Home from Les Mis live on stage)
Rob Lunquist: second tenor - the guy on the side who also had the lead, long beard and glasses - he’s from Minnesota, and is the second-longest involved current member(I think he was local which is why they met him)
Tim Foust: bass - shoulder length brown hair, although he cut it recently, but I think his voice makes him identifiable enough - he’s from southeast Texas, and they met him through networking, the group went through a lot of really good basses, but couldn’t keep one, and Tim was singing for different a cappella groups(he also released a solo album after joining Home Free, some of the songs of which Home Fire has re-recorded)
Adam Rupp: beatboxer - easy enough to spot, but has blondish hair long or short - he’s from Mankato, Minnesota and cofounded the group with his brother Chris Rupp when they were in college. He has a degree in trumpet performance which helps with his beatboxing technique, and he’s called the “freak of nature” because his beatboxing is just so incredible-which is funny to find in a country group, but he is literally one of the best.
Adam Chance(called Chance): current baritone - short dark hair and short dark beard - he replaced Chris Rupp when he left(on good terms to pursue other music) and he used to sing bass for an a capella group called Streetcorner Symphony which was on the same season of The Sing-Off that Home Free won. That’s how they met(and there was a tour afterwards so the became friends) and he joined a few years later. Now when Tim sings lead they’re able to let him take bass without killing their baritone 😂 (if you want to know where he’s from, he’s from Alabama - also, Tim and Austin live in Nashville now, Adam and Rob live in Minnesota, and Chance lives in LA)
And Chris Rupp: past baritone - you’ll see him in older videos, bald or wearing a cowboy hat - he cofounded the group, but it was really his labor of love.
Once they got their lineup straight (after several different high tenors and basses) their group really took off and they solidified their sound. They then won The Sing-Off and began producing music videos and albums, and they’ve been incredibly successful ever since. They don’t have any shortage of awesome songs, but some to start with include “End Of The Road”, “The Butts Medley”, “Ring of Fire” ft. Avi Kaplan(the bass of Pentatonix)
They’re pretty unique in their country a capella style, when they won The Sing-Off(the same show that Pentatonix won), but they also extend to other genres : ) - Plus have an incredible sense of comedy that’s well worth a look.

The quick and dirty run-down of the formation: the beatboxer, Adam, and his brother Chris formed the group in Minneapolis with Rob, the husky, dark bearded fellow. Chris is no longer with the group. He left to start a solo career. They recruited Tim Foust, the bass. He's originally from Texas. They had performed some of the same gigs and knew each other. They found Austin, the slender, hat-wearing guy in the middle, while he was a singer on a cruise ship. He's from Georgia. Chance, the guy who was making the mouth harp sound, what you thought was a didgeridoo, replaced Chris as the group's baritone. Chance is from Alabama.
I'm sure some of that isn't 100% accurate, but it's close enough. The point is that they all met in the ways musicians normally meet: either by auditioning for a job the way an actor does, or by not so random chance while performing.
Home Free won The Sing Off the year after Pentatonix did. VoicePlay came in second to Home Free. Those are the 3 biggest a cappella groups going.
The Rupp brothers formed the group in 2000 with their friend Matt Atwood. Rob joined in 2008.

The 1913 recording was by Dick Burnett in Kentucky, this was the first time it was recorded. The Stanley Brothers version was done in the 1950s. The song itself is probably two or three hundred years old.

She was spot on! I'm pretty sure some of them are from the northern Midwest. Until recently, I had never seen Home Free use any instruments, but there's a guitar in a very recent video. Every sound in this video is from their voices.
In my opinion, the top three acapella groups now are Home Free, Voice Play, and Pentatonix. You’ll be extremely surprised at all of them! They are all great! You really should react to all of them! That sound (similar to a didgeridoo) is actually the sound of a Jews Harp or Jaw Harp. Check out more of them. You will be blown away. This is a cover. There is a movie with George Clooney called Oh Brother Where Art Thou. This song is from that movie. To really appreciate their vocals try their video of How Great Thou Art. They are an acapella group. They tour and record and it's just their voices.

Adam and his brother Chris Rupp formed the group in the Twin Cities. They have had others join the group since then, but pick up Rob from Mankato, MN. Next came Tim ( he’s the bass) from TX. Then they pick up Austin Brown from GA. Chris decided he wanted a solo career so then they got Adam Chance ( who they just call Chance).
Home free was originally from a singing competition which they won. At least where they started gaining fame.They do a bunch of covers from a bunch of different genres but are mainly country. And yes they don't use instruments beyond their voices. You should do their "American Pie" cover ft Don McLean the guy who originally sang it 50 years ago. Amazing group. Before going full time they actually sang around Minnesota doing county fairs and such. But after winning the competition and getting the recording contract and winning the $100,000 then they went full time.
Austin, who sang most of the lead, is from Georgia. Tim, the bass is from Texas. There's genuine Southern sound in there.
