Thank you! I had the same issue after my wheel fell off due to a missing linch pin. Replaced it and the wheels didn't engage (gear free spinning). If I hadn't watched this, I never would have found the woodruff key that fell on the ground! I was able to get it back together and working again!
Smart thinking putting everything back according to the manual because if something goes wrong if you put it together any other way without the customer agreeing to this difference, you likely would need to cover costs for reworking what you previously had done. Additionally, you would need to check travel left and right of the friction disc to ensure it would not hit anything above ie: changed washer location, addition of hose clamps or wire. Arthur Boucher When looking at a diagram for this model, it shows both washers near the gear! So it goes Gear, 2 washers, spacer. Although it would make sense for the washers to be on either side of the spacer, this isn't what was in the manual! Perhaps, if the washers we're on either side, maybe that chromoly tube wouldn't have pushed up underneath the plastic spacer... Could be a design flaw, or perhaps the manual diagram is wrong!
I would still use a hose clamp on the new ones. I would make a spacer out of brass. Use a piece of pipe and cut in half . put the 2 halves together with a hose clamp.

It should roll regardless of which gear it's in, as the friction wheel engaging the plate is the only thing that should stop the wheels when not running
I had a similar issue, but my drive worked, but the EZ-steer power steering levers did not. When I depressed the power steering lever, I was not able to depress it. After emptying the 30" snowblower of gas and oil and tipping it on its front end, I then tilted the snowblower to one side. I worked that power steering lever to a point where it went in and used a zip tie to hold the power steering lever in. I then went to rotate the wheel and could not. I sprayed some PB blaster in the seams between the chrome olley tube and the spacer and manually worked the wheel until it was able to spin with the effort of one finger. I did the same thing to the other side. Seems every 4 years, I have to do this. (Snowblower is only 12 years old) Would you recommend I remove that entire axle, remove the chrome olly tube, and grease that entire shaft with wheel bearing grease so this doesn't happen again? Or is the spacing of the chrome olly tube that sits over the shaft have spacing so tight that it does not allow for any grease to be added? (Wish they put some sort of grease fitting on this thing..) P.S. I love the attention to detail in all your videos!!
I have a 2005 30" troy bilt. Looks exactly the same as this. I was snow blowing yesterday about 20 degrees outside and my drive stopped working after I was out there for about an hour. I adjusted the friction wheel and it helped but minimally. I found that my right side "brake" wasn't working correctly, when I would pull the finger trigger to disengage the wheel, the wheel would actually spin faster. The other wheel was doing nothing. I took everything apart and put it back together and found nothing broken. I jerked it around a few times and now it finally works normal again. My question is that cup gear on the axle shaft has 4 gears inside of it, could that have been the problem? Does that need to be greased?
Nevermind I found the gear that the Dogg is on bearings self destructed. Looks like you can't just buy that gear and cup setup. You have to buy the whole axel assembly.
@@michaelcline5410 I was able to tap out the worn internal bushing on the innermost sproket and replace it. The Centre gear (biggest) has internal splines that grip the splines on the shaft.Both were worn and I was able to make a loop of 5/16" wide Brass shim stock and then with a piece of pipe tap the gear back over the shaft splines. Works.
I know this video is old but it should be washer-spacer-washer, that washer will keep that spacer from riding on to the chrome tube, not trying to be a jerk, working on a cub cadet right now which has the same setup and from the factory it washer-spacer-washer.
fatbatcam 1 I was going to, but he smoked the belts during a heavy snowfall we had. (I thought they'd last another season) So I had to refilm that part, it was unexpected and will delay the vid til next weekend!

Just take your time, I would recommend taking pictures with a cell phone or camera if you have one. That way you can look at the pictures and use them as a reference when reassembling everything. Take your time, and do it piece by piece. Nope mine had the planetary seized on the left wheel, What a pain in the butt to take off, Hammer and chisel job, i should have replaced the planetary but the assembly was $360 so spent some time to free it up and put marine grease on everything,

Those spacers should be removed yearly and grease the shaft where they go.
a black wire tie would hold them in place and keep them from falling off

Just put some washers in the space and don't buy the oem worthless parts. Do it all the time works
