THANK YOU for interviewing her. With all the misinformation going around with this Sting vs. Juice WRLD situation, SOMEBODY has to give the real expert take.
Facts. Also history has shown Sting doesn’t like to be sampled. If he finds someone sampled him, he’ll take most of if not all the royalties from the song.
Beautiful beautiful video!! I love sampling & came up on sampling! My take is this... The artist we sample, we sample OUT OF RESPECT!!! The reason we sample something is because we think it's so dope & inspiring from the original!! If we felt it was uninspired, it wouldn't get sampled!! It's not a diss to the original work, it's a praise, its show of RESPECT because we want to sample part of it! Big ups to the Golden Era of Hip Hop comeback!!
for real tho! sampling is straight up out of respect! althoughit seems like composers are possessive over their melodies, or emotions you could call it... it all makes sense really
@u2good2b4gotn All samples don't equate to a hit. It is an homage but the original creative must share the views or at least not feel compromised by the message of the new creative. The are receiving new life to their old record which the new artist wont share in so they should chill with the greed (Sting) on the new record and be a good partner or don't do business at all. But there are plenty of samples that didn't lead to a hit record even songs that were hit records it still takes savvy, skill, talent and taste and push to hope to make a record work sample or not. There are also plenty of folks like Heiroglyphics who wanted to get a clearance for samploing the song Angela from the tv show Taxi that got declined and they are skilled and talented writers. Shout out to KRS-One and Chuck D for attempting to give clearance to all future artist on that famed BET INterview. Shout out to TRent Reznor for making a sample album even if it did result in Old Town Road.
I swear if all the music distributors (distrokid, tunecore, etc) connected with labels and copyright owners for sample use this world would be much easier
Im so happy samples are getting a new transformed market with technology. I miss using samples but with copyright and DMCA so active now online it hasn't been worth it lately. Synths and Piano are cool but nothing beats the sound of a sampled song.
I buy all my samples on Itunes. A lot of my samples are obscure af. I can't find the tracks on Tracklib. What do I do? I don't want to be sued by Sting.
This is the best video I have seen in a while. Been on Tracklib since the beginning. Still getting my feet wet with it, but I love that the option is there to sample legally.
Finally! someone who has explained the details on how this sampling thing works. I feel good for old school artist who now are going to get their just due and credit for their great music. If only James brown, Michael Jackson and others was still here, they would have loved this organization. GREAT VIDEO!
The craziest part about this is maybe people don't understand Juice wrld is signed to a record label which has lawyers and Personnel to assist with things like this so how did this happen??? Scratch your head for a second and think about it
Tracklib is a great idea as of now, more time needs to pass. Unfortunately for me the things I enjoy to sample are nowhere on these platforms. I'll be estatic the day they are.
This tracklib website is dope. I just checked it out. Is that hers? That’s BRILLIANT. My law school dissertation was about royalties and recording artist agreements and I was an emcee at the time. To be honest, my talent had always been to predict trends in the music business. I must admit, it’s rare I encounter something that I didn’t see coming. I do not know how I missed this idea of semi-automated sample clearances. To me, when I got into production and advising other producers, my theory was do one of three things: 1) do what you can to avoid sampling especially on commercial releases without trapping everything. If that’s not possible, try 2) using a work for hire clause in the agreement with the client with more up front money to mitigate your liability exposure, transferring it to the client. Or 3) create an interpolation of the sample as used, which can either remove sound sample liability or licensing fees or both, or 4) front like it’s for promotional use only and take your chances, in which case don’t put my name anywhere and pay my legal fees in non consequential small bills only. 🤣 the reason I had that mindset was for some of the exact reasons stated: it can be extremely difficult to track down and then convince rights holders of original works. If it is obscure enough of a sample, tracking down the rights holder can prove prohibitively daunting. If it’s a more mainstream sample, it could be prohibitively expensive to clear the sample. If it’s extremely expensive to clear the sample, a producer might be wasting their time by even making the beat, or could end up with a price point for the track that renders it unsalable to their client base. The number of times I hear that a noted indie producer just foregoes all the legalities because they are artists and NOT lawyers, and the final record becomes relatively successful in the consumer market with zero clearances is about 🤔 95-99 percent. Often that’s when they hit me on messenger like “What do I do, Soultan?” But this way, the client or the producer themselves can go in knowing what is at stake and can stay in bounds without encountering a clearance nightmare that ultimately precludes the song from being released, or risking their royalties and incurring punitive damages that the overwhelming majority of parties to the endeavor can not afford without cry laughing.
Thank you so much @CurtissKingTV for this interview. As a sample based producer myself, this information was greatly needed and appreciated. I’ll definitely be reaching out to secure her services. #LongLiveSampling
How does sample clearing work when sampling from an independent artist or musician that’s solo that doesn’t belong to a label vs one that belongs to a major label? What type of contract should you draw up with them and what’s a fair split?
Excuse Me Miss Boss. When I heard you said 1990 it hit me cuz that's when I was birth. Music was already on the earth for a long time past my time. Surpass your time and your grandparents your grandfather's * include mines. Although everything you have been saying I respect it and I'm truly proud that you're getting be open about what you feel.
Awesome interview! Curtiss, as far as that unique sound you were referring to is FEELING. Most music production (early 90's and beyond) was strongly driven by life experiences and emotions. Discernibly today, more artists are seeking the gimmick/get rich off this art approach resulting in the difference between era's.
First off good morning To you And your family I appreciate all that you are doing for this community this video Was 100 % I just have 1 questions I didn't hear you guys explained who's job is it to clear the sample The artist or the producer a lot of times it's a deal breaker you know that espically when budgets Are tight or right at the max Thanks for your sacrafice and devotion to this art form look forward to hearing your reply stay well You and your family
have you already licensed a beat officially via tracklib? will they approve my beat before i get the license so that i'm 100% save or can everyone buy a license without any approval of the actual beat but if something is against the terms (they are not even clear to me) the license is useless? i'm waiting since a week for an answer from tracklib
Trackmasters were the first ones to sample the Sting song on Nas “The Message” in 96. It was more cheaper from what I’ve heard. After The Message, lots of artists used the sample so many times over the years that the price went up so high to clear it.
This is a very good video very intuitive I have checked out track lip after watching your video unfortunately it's not exactly what it's cracked up to be I tried to get a song cleared that was sampled. But they did not have that song in their Library I search for other songs they did not have them either. So after a whole bunch of footwork we discovered that Universal Chapel on the publishing for the song and was able to figure out a negotiation about using the licensing. Great video though, these video should be inspiration to up-and-coming artists and producers alike.
Yo Curtiss king was up? You are the main man, so much useful information to be taken from your video's it's unreal. #producerlife #samplelife #londonlife #firebeats #south_eazy_beatz #curtisskingtv
I was surprised to find out when she said that sampling actually brings back certain types of music. No lie, I didn’t know who Lana Del Rey was until I heard the “Summer Time Sadness” EDM remix done by Cedric Gervais and to be honest, I like the remix better than the actual song lol. But the actual is cool too. Sampling does help out both parties if done right.
DO I NEED TO CLEAR WITH MASTER HOLDER IF IM NOT USING THE ORIGINAL RECORDING. SAY IM ONLY USING LYRICS AND PART OF THE MELODY AND RECORDING IN MY OWN VOICE.
Hi I'm interested in finding out when she says 5% on Marshall's Album so for one single sample they demand 5% of entire Album Sales what If sample is used only on a song that will be released as a single what happens then? And let's say for example a song was sampled like Tupac Changes but da beat is slightly different to Da Original the way it is so do you owe The Tupac Foundation and The Way it is Guy??? Please someone explain to me
The whole Frankie Lymon case from the Diana Ross Remake... this is great I'm a rapper how would I go about buying rights but getting them mixed by a producer...Wat would u say those splits should look like
Does anyone know how to sample voice recordings from commercials legally? A great example would be "Taking What's not Yours" by TV Girl. She uses a commercial and a presidential conference.
if you chop a sample like for example the sing about me by kendrick lamar, do you need to clear the sample? sorry im pretty new to this music industry part
@CurtissKingTV Man it was cool of you to do this but to me it would have had more value. Had you discussed how the a deal is worked and variation of deal structures and points. Can it be done as back end only? How to start the conversation , keep the conversation going and how to close the deal?
THANK YOU for interviewing her. With all the misinformation going around with this Sting vs. Juice WRLD situation, SOMEBODY has to give the real expert take.
Real talk!!
Hell yeah , pain and curtis always been droppin gems of info!
totally agreed.
Rip Juice Wrld
Facts. Also history has shown Sting doesn’t like to be sampled. If he finds someone sampled him, he’ll take most of if not all the royalties from the song.
Someone give this man an award! He got the sample clearance queen droppin gems! Amazing interview and Perfect timing!

@u2good2b4gotn getting rights to use is not an easy thing, nor possible for some people are certain stages
Yo Sin, I could not have said it better. One Love

Im so happy samples are getting a new transformed market with technology. I miss using samples but with copyright and DMCA so active now online it hasn't been worth it lately. Synths and Piano are cool but nothing beats the sound of a sampled song.
this is amazing no need to worry about getiin samples cleared now
I buy all my samples on Itunes. A lot of my samples are obscure af. I can't find the tracks on Tracklib. What do I do? I don't want to be sued by Sting.
This is great man, you make a great interviewer.
The best BEST video for producers and artists!!!!!!
This is the best video I have seen in a while. Been on Tracklib since the beginning. Still getting my feet wet with it, but I love that the option is there to sample legally.

*This woman is the real deal I seen her on an interview with Wendy day, if you're not using her you're losing*
Finally! someone who has explained the details on how this sampling thing works. I feel good for old school artist who now are going to get their just due and credit for their great music. this is such a blessing! im glad you had the contacts to make this happen
Damn, Juicewrld could've used this video 😭😂😂
Lol
😭😭😂😂😂

Wasn't his fault it's the company's responsibility to make sure everything is cleared!
Smh
KNOWLEDGE IS KING ✌FAM
knxwledge
She makes an excellent point. 5% of a big track is better than nothing. More songs get cleared than NOT.
thank you for this, amazing interview
Tracklib is a great idea as of now, more time needs to pass. Unfortunately for me the things I enjoy to sample are nowhere on these platforms. I'll be estatic the day they are.
Such a timely video, thank you man!
This is funny because I cited Deborah in one of my college essays haha! But dope video 🤘🏽
This should've been on United Masters Webinar/Convention. Thanks for the knowledge and her interview. Thanks..

Oh damn, I sampled Anita Baker's Angel for a Natasha Beddingfield track I did. Better take it out
Thanks for always sharing information🙏🏿

🔥🔥🔥 is the mood!
Very informative, I appreciate the positives always. I feel better about sampling now, it’s to start digging in the creates.
Hell yeah. Right on Curtiss 👑!!!
Thanks for sharing & inspiring us. This is amazing contest.
If I sample a part of a stand up comedy video on RUclips and put it on the intro to my song... how should I go about getting that cleared for release?
Awesome interview! Curtiss, as far as that unique sound you were referring to is FEELING. Most music production (early 90's and beyond) was strongly driven by life experiences and emotions. Mostly due to the internet. Anybody can "do it" now. And most just do it for the image, not the real drive.
This is such useful information, and i love watching you evolve CK✌
Never can get enough of this topic
Thank you Curtiss!!👏🏾👏🏾💯
Man just nothing but gems thank you too much knowledge
This was a powerful presentation!
Can a clip from sitcom be cleared with tracklib incorporated into music??
Amazing work here brother!
Amazing interview! This is huge for me being a big sample based producer. Thank you for this video/interview 🙏

this is awesome. what about sampling from film and tv?
Great interview. Great information.
Heading to the vinyl store!
Nas Used the same sample as juice world back in the 90s!
SABOTAAGEBEATZ the message 🔥
Also, Carl Thomas used it in his single, Emotional.
Tory Lanez used it as well the only thing about them and Juice Wrld is that they actually paid to have the sample cleared

Thats crazy, this is exactly what i was looking for. Keep it up G 💯🙏
Great video CK, very helpful!
What she described at about 5:15 is in fact a contract as per the Uniform Commercial Code.
Great video. Thanks for the info.
Thank you
Needed this one preciate it mane. Sample time!
Shout out for the video!
Shoutout MSXII audio and drum brokers they have a bunch of sample packs, that sound like 70s and 80s samples that you can use in your production.
Great interview

Educational and informative. Thank you!!

Great info bro.🔥🔥🔥
Great video thanks! What if the sample is taken from a track that the record label declares as public domain?
Does tracklib have various subscription levels??
