I will show you how to make maggots at home using only very simple tools like a drill, saw, some wood, rope, wire, and some rotting meat. I wasn't sure if our trophy hatchery rainbow trout pond fish from Lyndon would love maggots or not, but the results are surprising!
Maggot Life Cycle
The life cycle of a fly begins when a female lays an egg on a food medium like rotting meat. A female fly can lay up to 150 eggs at a time. Over a period of a few days, the female can make 5-6 batches of eggs. Eggs are deposited in compost, manure and other decomposing organic material. Eggs resemble very small grains of rice.
After 23 hours, the eggs hatch into the first larvae stage known as a maggot. These are legless white insects. They are basically worms with a mouth piece. All they do is crawl around eating voraciously. During the maggot stage, they will molt several times, once at 27 hours and 22 hours, and finally into a pupae at 130 hours.
After feeding, the maggot will find a place to pupate or cocoon into a brown hard shell. This protects the inactive fly. Over the course of three to six days (143 hours), the pupae develop legs and wings, ultimately emerging as full-grown house flies. Within two to three days, female house flies are capable of completing the life cycle and depositing eggs or mating with a female.

You should keep a breeder pig
WHAT TO HECK KINDA FLY GOING TO DELVOPE FROM THAT THING.🤯😮
Repurposing a clothes line would be 100% more efficient. In your defense you where part of the way there with the gondola rope. But a clothes line would be 100% more efficient, you can push, or pull the box where needed without needing to pull a rope from side to side manually!!!
My next concern is the water quality... you have rotting meat and fluids leaking into the water with nothing to really clean the water source I'm concerned the pound will become a cesspool. I mean there is a real threat of waste contamination from decaying, rotting animals and insects continually dropping for only 4 fish. There is no way that 4 fish are cleaning that water source. Possibly adding catfish or carp that are filter fish bottom feeders would help with future upkeep?
Never thought I would be looking at a “maggot feeder” on RUclips but here I am and it was pretty sick
My grandfather told me to hang a rope across the pond with an LED lightbulb hanging from the center and 2 plexiglass baffles. The insects see the light and drop into the water when they fly into the baffles. Also, check out the bojo fish light. I bought one for my father in law.
Smart tactic.
He did it bro he took your advice😂
I was going to suspend a light over a fan to blow the bugs into the water. Your "baffle" idea is much better as it is almost completely passive.
Do they have the lights that come with the stank? You taking all the fun out of it! I mean what are you supposed to do with that huge pile of road kill you been saving up?

Full Stop. And my wife said not to do this ever again, the chicken run smelled horrible for weeks. LOL
You lost me when you said your wife said something. She evidently don't cook and clean. It's your fault, weak men.
Use black soldier flies larva
What a brother Kevin is, he used like $800 in lumber to make that box for you lol. Tell him to make sure and write it off on his taxes.

Morning coffee & my favorite YT channel with a beard! All is right in the world.
Go Woodbeard, we're watching all videos all the way through because I think I know how much work is put into delivering this to us. And thank you again! And I also want you to know that I think you and Jeremy make an awesome team.
Damn dude, that's quite the compound you have going there!
I would've done it like a clothesline: a loop secured by pulleys on both trees. Then the box doesn't need to slide on a tube. It could be knotted to the clothes line directly. But this seems to work. There's so much good design presented in this video!
My thoughts as well. It would eliminate the need for that third rope and having two people pull it in the opposite direction. Plus the friction would be insignificant and the rope would last a long time.
BTW, is the maggot feeder still in use?
OMG I FINALLY FOUND THIS CHANNEL BACK I watch the the episodes some years back I’m so happy I found this back
Hello Thank you very much my dear freind beautiful 💓💓🍰🤗💌☕☕💓🥰👱♀️
I think you need to add in some minnows it'll be fun to see the trout's going after the minnows as they eat the maggots.
"It rained and the water is chocolate brown..." man what kinda chocolate you eating!? 😂
:)
homemade bush chocolate
Canadian bush milk chocolate
Honestly, these videos are really great to relax to on fridays
The progeny of flies. Somebody should name their band that
Full stop. And if I had a pond I would do this. Such a good idea.
Grass idea for fishing management in pond 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🐛🐛
This is like an IRL Minecraft automation feeder how to tutorial, thanks RUclips algorithm, 10/10
Your channel brings me so much joy
Man dude you should count it and enter it into the Guinness book of world records but I think you said maggots more than anybody on the planet LOL love your guys' show
Full stop, these feeders looked awesome‼️‼️
Full stop, glad your doing more maggot work. Been using feeders fourty plus years. Brookies seem to really fatten up for the fall spawn.
I love listening to Chris ramble on and on. The ingenuity and everything else is just a great bonus.
Thanks for all you do. Good luck with the Canadian government. America isn't all that great either.
I'll be watching your videos no matter what. Also, I'm trying to convince the fiance to let me get some Woodobo.
the maggot video i’ve been waiting for 😂
hi Chris, that was pretty smart thing to do!! be safe, thank you, bill
Those flies were crazy fullstop. 😊👍
Full stop, no other way to do it. Idk what it is but these are my favorite videos you post. Something oddly satisfying about the maggot traps 🤣
Some Little Rascals stuff going on here👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Imagine being a trout and watching some crazy dude with a beard hang a gondola full of rotting carp over you to feed you maggots. Priceless.
I first wondered why you'd put a cadaver above the pond until I realized that there will be a lot of flies and their offspring ready to be eaten by the fish. This is genius. I love it and I would do something similar if I ever have the chance to do something this exciting!
UNDERWATER fish footage is always amazing !!
Canadian Jam Knot 🪢👌😁
Awesome man
I need to do this
Great dry heave 😂
Full stop
use a trucker's hitch to easily adjust the line! it also gives ya a pulley advantage
Great video as always maggots remind me of rice I can’t do it LOL 😂
The trout are truly enjoying the maggots.
Yes! I was waiting exactly for this. Love the feed/biomass conversion videos
It would be awesome to see you tinkering with making fish protein entirely from vegetable waste. With beetles or worms or cockroaches.
I think you were better off with the bucket, I think that chicken wire is going to let a lot of the fish fall through as it breaks down. The wider dimensions of the box also make it more prone to tipping. Put a PVC pipe on opposite sides and hang it from 2 ropes, this will keep it from tipping, put less stress on the rope, and prevent the thing from falling in the water if one rope fails.
I’m only 16 minutes in . But why not . Make the line that you’re pulling with , 1 big line that loops , and put a pulley with a crank handle on both ends .
So you can just crank it one direction or the other without another person having to help you ?
Sorry just a suggestion . Love the videos !
I suggest you put a plate on top of the wire mesh so that the smaller maggots do not fall straight into the water. Leave space all around so that the pre-pupae will fall when they start crawling for dry ground to burrow. That way you will have optimal fat maggots
That would help a bit. I put a cam underwater, and let it run for 2 hours...some pretty good sized ones dropping at a regular rate!
I would have went with 2 pullies, so you can operate from one side.
Close line pulleys, one longer rope and double the strength.
Gonna have some big old frogs too! Frog legs are delicious, go good with trout.
I hope Kevin is getting paid for this. You are one demanding man! hehe.
How you doing Kevin?
I'm going to be 100% honest, I was skeptical, but holy crap man, this works awesomely! Smart work.
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya 🙏
Scent free setup: 5 gallon bucket with lid. “T” fitting on lid leading down to bucket, drill holes on bottom of bucket. Add 3 or so inches of wood shavings add rotting protein over wood shavings and hang over pond or field for chickens. When the maggots start forming the will start trickling out of the bottom holes, but the wood shavings will block the scent and the t fitting will allow flies to lay eggs
If it helps, you could also use a clothesline with the pulleys. Just an other idea. Love your videos!
Full Stop friend. I love the channel and the content. And the family. Great people.
Wow Babe in the Bearded City
Man awesome!! Trout love maggots in the uk we catch lots on them! Your trout are most likely eating most of them as they fall through the water
You should get a few catfish to compete with the trout on the bottom
If you put it a bit higher up they’d splash more on the surface probably stimulate more surface feeding
In the uk it was a old traditional method to just hang a rabbit high in a tree over the river. Writhing a few days hundreds of fish waiting there very easy to catch. Just two maggots on the hook dropped under the feeder bam every cast!
i would use a come along for the line across too get better tension and pullies and rope fore the retraction that way you can put more weight on it, as for reducing smells maybe put some gasket around the lid and some acrylic glass that extends to the water on all four sides.
Full stop! Awesome contraption.
Dude that underwater maggot scene with the camera going above the maggot feeder and that "No Exit" sign almost looked like out of a horror movie :D
Full stop.
Great great episode Chris.. much better feeder than before.. hopefully you will get nice fat fish..
Full stop. Very cool maggot feeder!
feel like ive been waiting a year and a half for this video. not a bad little system you got and its all free fish food....definitely way more nutritious than pretty much any feed you could buy too
I wish I had 1 percent of this mans DIY acumen
Big love from Dubai
I like the pen you built for the Kanadian kops.
Great video. Full stop!
Great job man! Awesome video too! Time to add some more fish. Full stop
Full Stop! Nice job on the feeder.
You can put bowstring wax or regular candle wax on the main rope to help it last longer. It will also make it slide smoother and probably protect it from the friction.
Best maggot feeder video I’ve seen! Actually I’ve never heard of this till now
You should make a trapp to catch the flyes and send them in the water.
Good job Yankee
Have you heard about using black soldier flies as a food source? Less messy, very sanitary, easy to use, and no smell. Black soldier farming is the way to go. You can buy a black soldier fly feeder or make your own. People use the larva for chicken, duck, and fish feed. Black soldier fly larva is high in protein, fat, and calcium. Love the video.
This was awesome. full stop. love the underwater footage
love stuff like this I dont know how hot it gets there in the summer so you may need to dig your pound a bit deeper so they have cooler water in the hotter months and id look into getting some water filtering plants and a windmill for recirculating the water and keep it clean but the returning water should be dropped back in from height or forced in under pressure to create more oxygen trout like clean moving water you could section off your pound to run some other fast growing fish your idea to feed them live food is a ripper I dont know about other peoples but I can always taste farmed fish feed on pellets hope to see updates good luck
Great idea! Just a suggestion: If you put 2 pulleys on the trees and loop the rope you can just pull any amount of weight easily from one side or the cable with a zipline harness on it. Great for keeping your bait fish healthy i bet.
Wow I really will watch anything RUclips recommends me
Full stop! Greetings from across the pond. ;)
good job my friend thank you for sharing video
A friend of my dads used some old 50 gallon barrels he got along with some pallets to make a little raft. He used to use that to throw out roadkill for a similar setup to this. I was thinking if you got an opaque colored tub that was the same size as whatever raft you build you could keep it in the shade and covered to keep things going. If you built the raft to keep the pallet real close to the water you might be able to avoid some of the smell as well, though obviously you need some space for the flies to get in. Just throwing some different ideas not, not sure how well they would actually work though.
Full stop . Great job, super cool.
Full stop for the win !
If you re-build then two pulleys would of course be great so you can bring it in or out from one spot. You would also eliminate the tube and potential for eventually cutting through the rope.
But, if you only do a minor revision, heat the tube ends up and flare them
for sure there is a steam nearby you can use that to provide permanent clear water in your fishpond..just use a long hose install it from the steam all the way down to your pond
Nice one keep it up beardsman🔥🔥
Full stop Chris! ❤️ stay safe and be well
With how the mesh on the bottom is you could use a tarp and completly seal off the top.
this guy went god mode on the terrarium community lol
Locking good gondola 😊😊😊😊love from India good udobo Spice
Full Stop, great video as always!
It's also a good way just make the ropes a little longer so your gondola goes to the bottom and drags the mud and other debris out but you can dig your pond deeper everyday you could pull a scoop through let things settle drag it again and then move your beginning or end area a foot in either direction and do it again old-school dredging
I don’t have a pond or anything near it.. But this is epic! One day, I will build my own maggot feeder for my backyard pond (future pond)
Good times right there!
Oh PLEASE name the pigs Kevin Bacon and Chris P Bacon!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Haha...i was thinking the exact same names...fits perfect..
Full stop. Good DIY 👍
Ingenious Sir
That's a pretty cool feeder setup, full stop!
Full stop. Great video!
It’s always fascinating to watch your videos. Loved it.
Good morning brother from Syracuse NY USA
Bacon and scrapple is perfect names
I met a guy at work who told me years ago he made one out of a five-gallon bucket for his chickens. He told me he stuffed the top of the bucket over the roadkill with hay. I assume timothy or alfalfa. He said the hay kept the smell down. I've never made one for my birds, but now I think I'll have to give it a go.
That is a great idea!!! Love the vids man👍👍👍
fullstop. This is cool!
I was having a boring day till I had this notification
I did that years ago. Works very well.
