    I will show you how to make maggots at home using only very simple tools like a drill, saw, some wood, rope, wire, and some rotting meat. I wasn't sure if our trophy hatchery rainbow trout pond fish from Lyndon would love maggots or not, but the results are surprising!
    Maggot Life Cycle
    The life cycle of a fly begins when a female lays an egg on a food medium like rotting meat. A female fly can lay up to 150 eggs at a time. Over a period of a few days, the female can make 5-6 batches of eggs. Eggs are deposited in compost, manure and other decomposing organic material. Eggs resemble very small grains of rice.
    After 23 hours, the eggs hatch into the first larvae stage known as a maggot. These are legless white insects. They are basically worms with a mouth piece. All they do is crawl around eating voraciously. During the maggot stage, they will molt several times, once at 27 hours and 22 hours, and finally into a pupae at 130 hours.
    After feeding, the maggot will find a place to pupate or cocoon into a brown hard shell. This protects the inactive fly. Over the course of three to six days (143 hours), the pupae develop legs and wings, ultimately emerging as full-grown house flies. Within two to three days, female house flies are capable of completing the life cycle and depositing eggs or mating with a female.

      Repurposing a clothes line would be 100% more efficient. In your defense you where part of the way there with the gondola rope. But a clothes line would be 100% more efficient, you can push, or pull the box where needed without needing to pull a rope from side to side manually!!!

    • @N0xKn1ght
      @N0xKn1ght 3 года назад

      My next concern is the water quality... you have rotting meat and fluids leaking into the water with nothing to really clean the water source I'm concerned the pound will become a cesspool. I mean there is a real threat of waste contamination from decaying, rotting animals and insects continually dropping for only 4 fish. There is no way that 4 fish are cleaning that water source. Possibly adding catfish or carp that are filter fish bottom feeders would help with future upkeep?

    My grandfather told me to hang a rope across the pond with an LED lightbulb hanging from the center and 2 plexiglass baffles. The insects see the light and drop into the water when they fly into the baffles. Also, check out the bojo fish light. I bought one for my father in law.

    I would've done it like a clothesline: a loop secured by pulleys on both trees. Then the box doesn't need to slide on a tube. It could be knotted to the clothes line directly. But this seems to work. There's so much good design presented in this video!

    • @Verschlimmbesserung
      @Verschlimmbesserung Год назад +1

      My thoughts as well. It would eliminate the need for that third rope and having two people pull it in the opposite direction. Plus the friction would be insignificant and the rope would last a long time.
      BTW, is the maggot feeder still in use?

    I think you were better off with the bucket, I think that chicken wire is going to let a lot of the fish fall through as it breaks down. The wider dimensions of the box also make it more prone to tipping. Put a PVC pipe on opposite sides and hang it from 2 ropes, this will keep it from tipping, put less stress on the rope, and prevent the thing from falling in the water if one rope fails.

  • @BBoyDrkNova

    I’m only 16 minutes in . But why not . Make the line that you’re pulling with , 1 big line that loops , and put a pulley with a crank handle on both ends .
    So you can just crank it one direction or the other without another person having to help you ?
    Sorry just a suggestion . Love the videos !

  • @NeliusBowhunter
    @NeliusBowhunter 3 года назад +2

    I suggest you put a plate on top of the wire mesh so that the smaller maggots do not fall straight into the water. Leave space all around so that the pre-pupae will fall when they start crawling for dry ground to burrow. That way you will have optimal fat maggots

    Scent free setup: 5 gallon bucket with lid. “T” fitting on lid leading down to bucket, drill holes on bottom of bucket. Add 3 or so inches of wood shavings add rotting protein over wood shavings and hang over pond or field for chickens. When the maggots start forming the will start trickling out of the bottom holes, but the wood shavings will block the scent and the t fitting will allow flies to lay eggs

    Man awesome!! Trout love maggots in the uk we catch lots on them! Your trout are most likely eating most of them as they fall through the water
    You should get a few catfish to compete with the trout on the bottom
    If you put it a bit higher up they’d splash more on the surface probably stimulate more surface feeding
    In the uk it was a old traditional method to just hang a rabbit high in a tree over the river. Writhing a few days hundreds of fish waiting there very easy to catch. Just two maggots on the hook dropped under the feeder bam every cast!

  • @thes1lentgamer70

    i would use a come along for the line across too get better tension and pullies and rope fore the retraction that way you can put more weight on it, as for reducing smells maybe put some gasket around the lid and some acrylic glass that extends to the water on all four sides.

    A friend of my dads used some old 50 gallon barrels he got along with some pallets to make a little raft. He used to use that to throw out roadkill for a similar setup to this. I was thinking if you got an opaque colored tub that was the same size as whatever raft you build you could keep it in the shade and covered to keep things going. If you built the raft to keep the pallet real close to the water you might be able to avoid some of the smell as well, though obviously you need some space for the flies to get in. Just throwing some different ideas not, not sure how well they would actually work though.

    If you re-build then two pulleys would of course be great so you can bring it in or out from one spot. You would also eliminate the tube and potential for eventually cutting through the rope.
    But, if you only do a minor revision, heat the tube ends up and flare them
