  • Fixing Icom IC706 series radios has been part of every radio techs history I'm sure and working, they are a pleasure to operate. This one had milliwatts output and DSP had been zapped, but the two events may not be linked. All sorted with a few old frazzled parts thrown in the bin and new bits fitted. A great QSO with Dave VK5MRD and Andrew VK4RE on 40m at around 8pm at night was even more satisfying. Fixing the IC706Mk2G is a lot of fun, but transmitting to a few good mates and getting a test report is just more fun, especially when I date back some 20 yrars with Dave VK5MRD. Great results from hours of pushing this is output hard, it's the only real way to make sure the problem is solved and its not going to reoccure. My wife would say this sounds like an excuse to play radio😁😁😁. is she right??? maybe???cheers brenton vk3cm jdw229 pls subscribe and also feel free to join us on Facebook at Aussie Radio Pickers or vk ham sales and service anytime...

The ICOM 706 is one of the best ham radios ever made. I have 2. One I used as my mobile radio for about 10 years and the 2nd radio I switched from my base rig to my boat rig [32 foot Regal power boat floated on Lake Michigan-Chicago] also for about 10 years. The 706 is currently my main VHF/UHF and 6M base station rig. Another attribute of this radio is I always got/get good audio reports using the stock handheld microphone. 73, Martin in Chicago.

My home based is an Icom IC718. It does the job nicely. No mods & the covers have never been off. I also have 3 Yaesu radios. One is a VX6R, one FT7900R, and the FT891 with an ATAS120 antenna. All work very well.

My first ever Icom radio was the the IC-706, no mark no G version. I liked it but was missing some of the features that came out with the MarkIIG. 73 Joe

I've read that the icom ic-706 II (mark 2, non g) was the best of the 3 versions. No 440 but they are less problematic.
