      This is so fucking smart!! I can't stand when people who play yugioh say magic is just as expensive! That is so false, so many people play precon commander deck or slightly modified commander decks. Theres also great commander decks for like 70 to 100 dollars, if you really really want to get into it. Yugioh, you have to play the best decks which are around 700 to 1000 dollars

    Quitting YGO was a hard pill to swallow because I’ve been playing this game for over 10 years and I’ve made so many friends over the years, but with most of my friends moving state wide, the price to compete increasingly getting higher, the recent drama with most of the top tier players essentially gate keeping budget players, and the nearest YGO locals being over an hour away I couldn’t do it anymore. I also have been miserable for 2 years just trying to keep up on a budget and slamming my head against the wall just isn’t fun for me. I like to compete, play the best decks, and top events and you just can’t consistently do that on a budget. Pokémon’s has been a breathe of fresh air and has gotten me actually excited to play a card game. I don’t know if I’ll be back to YugIoh because if the situation in Europe is any indication, I don’t see things getting better.

    • @Animexdraco
      @Animexdraco 2 месяца назад +1

      The situation in Europe is really questioning. Lacks of big event, some product not sold in Europe... Coupled with the difficulty to find locals now, or the price in some country (Like in France Rarity collection box was 150€ and a booster 10€) or everything you've already say... And It's not like I can say "Hey let's play alternative format" because if I have already a hard time to find locals or players to play the card game in the current format, I will not be able to find anybody to play an alternative format

    Honestly, I think Master Duel should've been mentioned here. Yes, Snake-Eye is still the best deck currently there, but the fact that a free to play account can easily get enough crafting materials and gems to make the deck and even multiple other decks for fun is more than enough to satisfy the Yugioh itch for me, not to mention I don't have to drive 45 minutes to go to my closest locals!

    What are your thoughts on the fact that the insane prices being caused intentionally by Konami bumping the rarity of top cards like Snake-Eyes Poplar and Bonfire from Super Rare to Ultra when porting them from OCG to TCG. Seems to me like the only reason the games are separate is to squeeze more money from TCG players by having the cards come out later and making the good cards rarer.

    • @wren5413
      @wren5413 2 месяца назад +3

      The issue isnt really the rarity bumps. The issue is the set structure as a whole. In the Ocg, a card’s first printing is usually in multiple rarities, while in the Tcg they only get 1 rarity. Its really bad business practice

    • @calebdotexe
      @calebdotexe  2 месяца назад +3

      I do think some cards get bumped, likely to make more. But the solution really is having varying rarities similarly to both the OCG, and many other successful TCGs. Which ironically would be making them more money if they followed that structure.

    • @geek593
      @geek593 2 месяца назад +1

      @@wren5413 Adding to this, OCG doesn't need as many reprints because they attempt to hit demand of slightly less than demand for a card on its first release while letting those multiple treatments shuffle out as the money cards. The TCG's system of every good playable being in an extremely underprinted slot with a wide pool of other cards in that slot causes the S:P issue where demand eclipses the supply so hard we have a single card costing more than most other game's full competitive decks. TCG purposefully limits supply to get the FOMO buy and then reprints into the ground to keep the product cadence as fast as possible.

    At my old spot I went to, when formats started to look rough, we would dip our toes into draft nights for magic. not only was it a low time investment, it also still helped with supporting the store. Locals all around had a really tough time last year. It wouldn't help in the long run to just stop going until the next ban list. If you entered local tournaments on a regular basis, put that money in their pocket with another game or format in the meantime.
    Hell buy some packs and chill instead. You can try to dip you and your friends toes into something like draft. Or like you mentioned, bring up the idea of playing a low investment format like Edison.

    Quitting Yugioh for me was kickstarted by finishing college and no longer having locals and college folk who played the card game. It was also kickstarted by that time being the year of the FTK.
    Quitting was passive and it came up from going after a different hobby and doing less and less online with Yugioh. Ultimately it wasn’t until several years later that I offloaded most of my Yugioh stuff to friends who still played the game. If I visit them, we still play using a random ass pool of cards.
    There was a period of time where I didn’t play a tcg at all, but since 2021 I got into Pokémon tcg more competitively, learned One Piece, and learned Flesh and Blood. I keep an Emporio Ivanovo deck in OP just in case, but only just learned FaB so I haven’t built anything for that yet.

    As a Digimon player who loves the game and did leave yugioh for it and have never looked back, I feel compelled to point out the comment at 8:35 that the game is getting more accessible with time is flat out wrong.
    More and more key pieces of legacy support and staples that are mandatory 4 ofs in their specific deck are getting locked behind box toppers (a pack you get 1 of per box that contains 1 of 6 potential cards). In the past half year there has been 4 decks that I simply cannot play at the best because I have been priced out of them due to a lack of access to these promos at an affordable price.
    Secret Rares are also becoming way more commonly a required 4 of in decks, to the point that the latest Starter Deck has one it's best cards locked away as a secret rare in the following set after the starter deck comes out.
    I love the game, but it is becoming harder and harder every set to not feel priced out of a deck you really want to play, would highly recommend just playing the game on our DB equivalent, Project Drasil, or finding a group that doesn't mind proxying promos

    • @calebdotexe
      @calebdotexe  2 месяца назад

      I'd heard of box toppers being a good thing as it prevents those cards from being even rarer printings (and truth be told scrolling through box toppers none seem that expensive compared to yugioh).
      It's sad to hear secrets are becoming more required as when I got into the game last year the first thing I was told was that wasn't the case for the most part.

    • @maxwelljefferson117
      @maxwelljefferson117 2 месяца назад

      @@calebdotexe yes they aren't as expensive as something like S:P, but as someone who got into the game because I lack a lot of dispersible income, a mandatory 4 of at $25 a copy to play a casual rogue is really hard to justify.
      Also I don't know who told you box toppers mean lower rarity because a standard Box topper is the highest rarity in the game. They come at a one time 16% chance per box, whereas Secret Rares have a roughly ~36% chance per box and you have 2 chances at them because they can also occupy an alt art slot.
      In my personal experience, I have never met a DCG player who calls box toppers anything but one of the worst parts of the game. Especially if you live in a region where distribution is lower. In Canada where I live for example, it is borderline impossible to find any box toppers without a comical price markup or excessive shipping cost

    I've left yugioh a few years ago and changed to MTG. While yes, Wizards has been treating the playerbase poorly, the fact that the game has and actovely supports a bunch of other formats, including a casual format such as commander really pulled me heavily into the game and maintains me invested. I've been saying for a while now that yugioh desperately needs not only other, more affordable and casual focused formats, but it needs official support from konami for those, not limited to them just saying those formats exist and then forgetting that entirely.

    Just because Yu-Gi-Oh! isn't being as greedy or stingy as MtG doesn't mean we should give it a pass. We fans deserve better than this. Just look at the Pokemon TCG. That game, afaik, treats the fans with respect.

    Edison is a great option but also still on my own fence about jumping to elestrals
    either way i have had the most fun in this game lately looking back at older formats, reading into what they did and making videos about their histories has been exciting! it really is at the point that yugioh is just not for me and many other people who cant afford picking up another 1000$ deck every 3 months just to see it get reprinted into the ground or banned because of this. even the new support for older archetype just feel like the FTK or are trying to floodgate you out the game and after a while you just... give up.

It’s like we’re going from a Tier 0 to Tier 0 meta now, where the imbalance in power between decks is very deliberate. I feel like Kaz was the only thing keeping Konami on check, and with him gone, they’re gonna go in on cashing in on the game as much as they can.

I would also really like to mention that even in a tier 0 format rogue decks can very much compete at high level events, cheaper decks like raidraptor, branded or purrely very much still see success, even if they obviously aren't as good as snake-eye, there's competitive budget alternatives even if you don't want to play anti-meta.

    I think that getting into new card games in paper can be helped out a lot by having a good online client to learn on. I've been having a lot of fun with MTG in particular recently: I went from a complete newbie to playing a lot of arena and going 1-1-1 at a pre-release event, all because I had a safe place to fuck up and learn how the stack works without embarrassing myself in person.
    Really wish these other games had the same type of resources a la Master Duel, Arena etc.
