Not they he. Unlike today where there are dozens of animators that work on each shot there were only 2 animators for kong a main and assistant, Wilis O’Brien was the main animator and almost all the animation in this scene and in the movie was done by him, also the main Kong puppet was designed to be emotive since the armature actually had a wires placed under the foam lips so kong snarl and have a wide range of expressions same with kong’s eyelids and brow
I wouldn't even say "for 1933". The effects in this *are* better than modern films.. Did you know that the Empire State Building was still 70% empty for a while after it's completion? Then in March 1933, King Kong comes out, creates what is now known as the "blockbuster" movie because people stood in long lines for hours all the way around the entire block that their theater was on just so they could see the movie, and the Empire State Bldg received exponentially more applications for leasing office space as a result of the increased exposure this movie brought to it. Therefore, had King Kong never left Skull Island in the film, the Empire State Bldg would have been a huge financial debacle that set back Manhattan commerce and real estate for decades. Furthermore, some of the office space leased inside the ESB after 1933 were companies with military contracts that would go on to develop key items that helped the Allies win WW2. Who knows where we would be today, as an entire nation, had King Kong never made his fateful climb to the pinnacle of the Manhattan skyline in 1933?
It actually took much longer than 1933 to fill the building because it was planned and construction begun BEFORE the stock market crash of October 1929 and construction continued into the beginning of the Great Depression. Andrew Lewis this film cost about $670,000 (only $13,000,000 in 2019) which is pretty low for a blockbuster like Kong. The Greatest Film of All Time imo
@Luis Sinha It's even sadder in this film. The remake was so over dramatic with Kong's death. This one's sadder.

Yes. Considering that King Kong turns 90 this year, the special effects were revolutionary for 1933. Movies were still a developing technology, and no one had combined live-action and stop-motion before. The scene with the bug pit was storyboarded but never filmed.

Watching this just after the 2005 remake was amazing! They're so similar, yet completely different. Happy to add this to my movie list
I wonder how much the budget was for this and how long it took them to animate Kong. This still stands today as some of the greatest effects of the time I reckon.
Andrew Lewis this film cost about $670,000 (only $13,000,000 in 2019) which is pretty low for a blockbuster like Kong. The Greatest Film of All Time imo
@connextro please rethink your life
They basically used props from a cancelled Dinosaurs movie which reduced the budget.
Still one of the greatest movies ever made. And easily the most influential.
The shooting was one thing, but King Kong hitting the ledge on the building at 1:51 is ROUGH.
Yikes
Yeah it rivaled the propeller guy from “Titanic” 😱
They forced an extra to wear a gorilla suit then threw him off a 5 story ledge to get that shot.

Just like GTA IV.
Did anyone else kinda feel bad for Kong when he died because I did 😵😭😂

Help My life Me.
first time i was this when i was a kid i was whining LMAO
YES i keeped watching and replaying the part like 25x
@Luis Sinha It's even sadder in this film. Seeing as Kong's more helpless and was not very smart in this version, you feel a lot more sorry for him being taken from his environment and being shot down like this then the newer one. The remake was so over dramatic with Kong's death. This one's sadder.
Whos here after the Godzilla vs kong trailer
Lol me
Everyone.
Glad we have today movies
Me
The original King Kong is a Masterpiece. For a film made in 1933 which was 90 years ago, the special effects that were used for King Kong are amazing via Stop-Motion animation.
The fact that this was made almost 100 years ago still blows my mind
Love this movie, How the camera angles made Kong battle dinosaurs, attacking the village, interacting with the warriors, the citizens, the viewpoint from the pilots with Kong trying to grab them.
90 years later and this still scares and fascinates us.
One of my favorite films of all time. Such a masterpiece
One of the most iconic finales to ever put to a motion picture. Just saying.
Imagine showing Godzilla vs King Kong 2021 to people from 1933
they ll be shocked and horrified lol but probably amazed
@@wondergirl1586 they'd believe its real

The difference between this scene and the 2005 version is just amazing. Just goes to show how far movies have developed
This is more believable.

@@thebearandblueberryshow6617
Yes. The way Kong moves in the 2005 film and the physics defying performance is far less believable, even though technically he looks more real.
The 1933 fall was a bit more dark since he kept hitting the side of the building
@@cali4eddie That's true but they managed to make the 2005 version of Kong's death scene way more emotional
This speaks more emotions than current live action remakes!
Especially The Lion King 2019
1933 people: Woah this is the best realistic King Kong ever!!
2021 people: The King Kong is fake and unrealistic.

I've always thought this version of Kong is the cutest.
It is, but Ann doesn’t care for Kong.
This is a movie that is both highly beloved yet still under appreciated
From poorly exploited and dying to planes to challenging Godzilla, defeating MechaGodzilla and finding home in the Hollow Earth. Came a long way!!
Simply one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed.
Happy 90th Anniversary to this amazing film!!!
This scene really makes me think that we are the beasts and Kong was just a lost animal who is being tortured, anyone else??
Yeah 100%. Kong wasn't the monster, he was taken out of his habitat brutally into a world that he didn't understand.
Kong did nothing wrong, animals are animals
Humans have always been the monsters in this world. Always have been.

This is one of the Greatest Films in History
I first saw this as a kid on pbs in the mid 90s and it floored me. Now I see this film has no equal. What they were able to accomplish, not just 50 years after the beginning of sound in pictures, but three, my god they nailed it right from the start. To try and outdo what King Kong did then art needs a new medium. It’s On the short of the greatest films ever made. Sadly I see many today laugh at it.
I see a lot of people saying that this scene is ugly and strange but remember, this movie was released in 1933, they didn't even think about computers at the time and cinema was something new, the effects were all improvised and done in stop-motion (which takes a LOT of time), a scene like this is almost a miracle
Yes. Considering that King Kong turns 90 this year, the special effects were revolutionary for 1933. Movies were still a developing technology, and no one had combined live-action and stop-motion before. The scene with the bug pit was storyboarded but never filmed.
Peter Jackson & Ray Harryhausen?
You know this is still decent for an 87 year old movie
1:51-1:54 I know it’s supposed to be tragic but the way Kong’s body hit the other layers of the building was pretty funny
TokuNerd & More yeah, even during its time I thought it looked pretty silly but what’d you expect?
Lol I thought it was sadder and scarier, like overkill, getting beat up more as he falls :0
She ragdoll or something?
Beautiful effects for a 1933 movie.
Some scenes are put in a film to look cool, others are emotional, and some define the common media as we know it. This is one of them.
87 years old and still great.
And the nomination for the best picture goes to... King Kong (1933)... oh no there was a mistake the award for best picture is MOONLIGHT
Alfie Henderson nice reference my Boi.
