  • Cross country skiing, Norway’s national sport, and where better place to nordic ski than arguably Norway’s best cross country skiing location: Sjusjøen.
Also known as Nordic skiing, sometimes ski touring, or simply XC skiing, this sport is growing increasingly popular thanks to the combination of exercise, technique, and often stunning scenery.
360km of trails makes Sjusjøen a top Nordic skiing destination, with people travelling from all over Norway, and even the world, to ski here. Are the boys becoming the new johannes klæbo? Will they maybe Even meet Øystein Pettersen?
Sjusjøen is the location for several cross country skiing races throughout the ski season, including the famous Birkebeinerrennet which runs through Sjusjøen.
Cross country skiing, or langrennsski as it’s known in Norwegian, actually has two quite distinct styles, classic and skating (klassisk and skøyte in Norwegian respectively). The equipment, and more importantly technique, are quite different in each. Most XC skiing beginners start with classic, and then move onto skating which is usually considered more challenging.
Many professionals come to Sjusjøen to train, including Petter Northug, Johannes Klæbo, Marit Bjørgen, Øystein Pettersen, many of whom have won Olympic medals and represent the best of the best at the sport. And not to forget Therese Johaug.
Nordic skiing can be a serious workout and many consider skiers to have some of the highest VO2 max levels of any support. However, it’s also a popular activity with recreational skiers who simply enjoy heading out for a leisurely trip.
Should we make a episode with Therese Johaug?

I went to Sjusjøen for the first time last year after several years cross country skiing in Alpine regions. It was fantastic, I need to get back there. We stayed in Lillehammer and it was easy to catch the bus up to Sjusjøen for a day’s skiing finishing with a ski back to the outskirts of Lillehammer.

      @@Becomenorwegian
The thing is that skate skiers tend to disturb the classic tracks, especially on the traditional standard-width trails, where the middle section isn’t broad enough to allow for skating without sticking part of the ski into and across the classic track. This partially ruins the classic track and causes small piles of snow to fall into the track, making it more difficult to keep up a smooth classic stride.
I have just returned from Beitostølen, where many of the tracks have a broad enough middle section to allow for skate skiing, but skaters didn’t seem to keep to those. At one point a track had just been groomed-the grooming machine came towards us-and we were looking forward to pristine tracks after it had passed us. However, in front of us were three skate skiers, and they basically almost canceled the efforts of the grooming machine minutes after.
But hey, I’m Danish. Maybe this isn’t a thing among Norwegians … 🙃
