  • To Richard Winters body control is not the main thing -- it's the only thing. As he explains it more refinement and more precision requires body control. Richard illustrates how to get control of the head and neck, the shoulders, the ribcage and the hind end. Richard shows you how he starts with the head and neck and the exercises he does to get the horse soft in his hands. Then he moves on to Part 2, the shoulders. Shoulder control helps when loping circles and has other practical applications. Part 3 is control of the ribcage. Part 4 is control of the hind end. Having control of the hindquarters helps in turning on the forehand, flying lead changes, etc. Richard explains that having control of all four body parts results in harmony and is really a means to an end. Each part is needed before your horse can progress to higher-level moves. more at www.spalding-labs.com

I know this is an old video but this was the easiest way for me to learn how to do these maneuvers as a novice rider.

This guy, Richard Winters, has so much amazing and informative ways to help you and your horse. If I were to be able to train under anybody, it would be this guy. Such a helpful video. Thank you.

Those are some pretty good ideas. I knew some of it but especially the backwards circle is something I gotta try.

Again, not to be argumentative, but "collection" is not "getting control of the head and neck". That is the antithesis. Interesting how dropping a horse on the forehand, focusing on the head and neck has been called collection. It just isn't. True lightness doesn't come from the head. I get so perturbed when I hear the words, but they don't match what's happening in the horses body. Professional trainers needs to be more responsible for what they are teaching/saying. Competitive dressage has also lost the meaning of collection. Couldn't finish watching, sorry.

Terri Reuser you weren’t listening to what he said; should he dumb it down even further?

What’s wrong with what he was doing with the horse vs what he was saying, that you didn’t like?

Hmmm. You start off saying, "Again, not to be argumentative." This sounds like a habit.
So your beef is, what the word collection has morfed into. Go back and listen to the beginning of of the video. Really listen this time, and instead of knee jerk reacting to the talking point, hear his message. BTW, you may have a lot to be sorry for but most of us don't give a rat's arse that you couldn't finish watching!
