I'm not into noise music I don't like it. But as a metalhead I understand the people who make and listen to this type of music. A lot of people say that metal is just noise and trash but only a metalhead can understand how great the genre is. Metal musicians are passionate about their music and it takes a lot of talent. It's very hard for some people to digest it. I think noise music artists are very passionate about their work regardless of what other people think about their music. They're doing something they love.

It's also not my taste, but I think there's a bit of draw from a tinkery, nerdy type fascination. As he mentioned, a lot of this started as more a demonstration of different sounds that could be made with advancing technology. Even if it doesn't tickle your creative side, it can get you thinking about what could've made this sound or what it reminds you of in daily life. My favorite musicians use both structured, established (good-sounding) sounds along with great use of dissonance. Psychedelic rock, Metal, and EDM are good genres for this. I wouldn't consider pop songs using a simple DGC chord progression to be much more creative than any noise music. On the same note, I would consider noise music lacking recognizable appeal to many people. You get a good Pink Floyd song that rips your brain cells in one moment, and then resolves it with some sexy tones pulling at your heart strings, now that's real music, encapsulating concepts of harshness and beauty of real life and how they interact.

You're totally right, it makes sense now, I never think of it that way until you point it out. Listening to music felt really bland a few weeks ago for me. It's really weird and frustrating because listening to music is what eases my mind everyday, it become some sort of ritual for me. I was really frustrated.
But at that point, I remember I was creating a noise music playlist on Spotify, but I never actually listened to it, like I was making that playlist out of curiosity and was thinking maybe I'll listen to it later, and when I reached that point where every music felt really bland to me that it doesn't have this emotional impact like it used to, I chose to listen to them and it felt... Oddly refreshing. Listening to them feel like it exactly hit the right spot and it felt really cathartic.
It's not something that you'll listen to every day but damn I'm glad I discovered this genre.

They recently collaborated with The Rita, a very known harsh noise artist, on the track “la mala ordina” from their newest album. They were actually on Amoeba to talk about what they listen to. And the two producers check out experimental and noise music in their collection. ruclips.net/video/6vSfzip9qpY/видео.html . Also, thanks for the name correction.

After I watched your video I experimented with some noise music whild I did my daily chores on a free day. After a while it really became a weird kind of pleasantness. When I showered I had a distant memory from my childhood, something that I did not like to remember.
While I dried myself (and the lound noise already became like loud ambient to me) I decided to write one sentence about the memory.
The noise cleared my thoughts in a unique way and I was able to get new perspectives on a problem that I thought I already dealt with.
It was like there was some empty space in my head that my thoughts could use to observe themselves, not unlike in some psycedelic states. I filled the page without an effort and was surprised that I had so many hidden emotions about this event I've never dealt with.
This happened about two months ago and it kick-started a new phase where I discover new things about myself and heal from these past experiences. For real, it did something for me that I've never would have expected.
Anyways, are there noise artists that are more bass oriented? Lower and darker sounds that imply violence or monumental forces.. Is there something like that?

Well...when Lou made that work, many assumed it was a big F.U. to RCA for mishandling the promo for the previous release, "Sally Can't Dance". But when he arrived in Japan not long after MMM's release while on tour, he noted that the Japanese fans were BLASTING the album at him most places he went. In short, they "got it", as did others who noted the sonic connection back thru the Velvet Underground to La Monte Young's ensemble, the Theatre of Eternal Music. That was where Lou had first encountered John Cale, in fact, and Young's fascination with long and LOUD sustained tones was also a core principle for Lou Reed's work from his pre-Velvets period all the way through to late works like "Hudson River Wind Meditations". But MMM is very much the "missing link" that connects noise and (original) industrial music's to the classical avant-garde, and opened the door for all sorts of brutal sonic investigations starting in the mid/late 1970's. Neat stuff!

Lester Bangs did a great interview with Lou Reed regarding MMM that I believe was originally published in CREEM although it may have published elsewhere. Of course Lou and Lester are at thier acrimonious best as usual, the interview is cultural gold as Lou defends MMM and Lester and Lou go at each other verbally. IAE, the history of MMM is in that interview. It was ultimately released on the Red Seal label, a separate division of Lous' label because they didn't want thier name on it. AND- they put a disclaimer sticker on the front basically telling the buyer that they'd hate it so don't say we didn't tell you so. This interview can be found in the book Psychotic Reactions and Carburator Dung by Lester Bangs, I don't know if it is available on the Net. It's worth finding!

Listened to it a second time (the remastered version) and I think it's starting to grow on me. As Pad said, it's more like a musical palette cleanser if anything. Although Pulse Demon is probably the most well-known album in the harsh noise genre, it is probably not a great place to start if you're totally new to this kind of music. I'd say it is good to start with some noise-ambient albums like Love is a Stream by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma or Merzbeat or Merzbuddha by Merzbow of course. And if you're into black metal and stuff like this power electronics is a good entry point, my recommendation would be Summer in my Veins by I Am a Lake of Burning Orchids.

As a Pulse Demon cover t-shirt wearer, I really appreciate this video. Thank you for spreading this mature perspective on noise music. Although even this video, as conclusive and well-worded as it is, won't be enough to convince a lot of the conservative-minded folk who think of noise music and its fans as trying really hard to be as edgy as possible. And I won't be able to convince you that the latter sentence wasn't purposely made as long as it possibly could be. Every time I try to talk about my noise music experience, I get called an obnoxious tryhard or an edgelord. I'll do it again, though. I'll do it here. Here I go. Ready?
In a nuttshell, as I like to say, "fight noise with noise". I fight the noise in my head with noise in my ears. Most of the time, I listen to noise music just to get rid of whatever complicated toxic shit I'm feeling and/or thinking of. As Pad said, it isolates you from everything. Which might sound awful if your life's great and you just want to be present and enjoy it. I, however, when overwhelmed with anxiety, just want to get rid of my spiralling thoughts with some spiralling noise loops. I want to take all my stressors and just push them away with a universe-wide wall of noise. Fucking delete everything but me. At least for a little while.

I really went into this as a noise fan and artist expecting this to be a horrible video scratching the historical surface and berating the music but I'm pleasantly very surprised. You really encaptured in a 15 minute video what it is that makes it so enjoyable to me personally. It straps the conventions of music away and boils it down to its very definition, recorded sound. You make your own meaning of it in your listening and it's different from everyone else's. Yes there is good and very bad noise music out there but there are some pieces, like Merzbow's Venereology and Hybrid Noisebloom, my favorites of his personally, that can really suck you out of your own head and bring you a real, primal kind of relaxation that other, more traditional kinds of music can't exactly replicate. I know I'm commenting on an old video here but this was very well done and I appreciate a video with this many views being a good and non-hateful introduction to a style that means a lot to me personally.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Merzbow twice-once at (the now gone/demolished, but not forgotten) Lounge Ax in Octobre of 1996 and then again just a few years ago at the Empty Bottle. I have listened to and seen many bands in the Industrial, Noise, Experimental, Metal of all shapes and sizes and many have been quite loud or heavy...but nothing prepared me for what I faced with Merzbow. Earplugs were handed out at both shows, but I never used them. From the first tones, I was in sheer sonic BLISS-and the comments I've seen about Pulse Demon and noise music in general being like a mental eraser or psychick reset-are correct. There were no thoughts, no words....I had a huge garish grin on my face and my EYES were watering (like crying almost, in sheer joy). Then as I felt weightless, my bones and organs resonating along with the MOST INTENSE SOUNDS I'd ever experienced-I realized that I was LAUGHING like a fucking maniac! (Not that anyone could've heard me of course.) I looked around the room and others had similar reactions. A few left, with confused and terrified expressions on their faces (perhaps they were fans of the opening band, who had no idea who Masami Akita/Merzow were). Those 2 shows, along with a few others (MBV, TG, Einstürzende Neubauten, Skinny Puppy) will always be the pinnacle of my concert-going experience!!! If you you ever get the chance to see Bloodyminded live, especially in their native Chicago, don't miss it!

While it's true that most recorded music sounds best through a large PA system some generes (noise included) are very much about the room for me. I don't listen much to Merzbow records but have been to around 10 concerts over the years. It's so much better when the sound is absolute all around you to the point that the room becomes the noise your body is fully integrated into the movements of the rumbles. If you can't feel the music with your whole body it's often something wrong.

And what i feel is a great part of the noise music history that you forgot to mention is Musique Concrète, a french avant-garde genre that started in the 1940's pioneered by Pierre Schaeffer wich was basically the continuity of Luigi Russolo
    's musical work.
It's mostly music made with electronic device and / or unusual use of tape recorder. Like for exemple record a voice and then playing it back by pulling the tape by hand at various speed, or degrading the tape on purpose to get different sounds.
Also a bit later there was american Contemporary Music's artist like John Cage and Steve Reich taking inspiration from Music Concrete, Futurism, Traditional African Music and Musique Moderne (Satie, Gershwin, Bartók, Debussy...) to create revolutionary music blending live instrument, samples/recording and electronic devices. For exemple Steve Reich's Pendulum Music is played by swinging 4 hanged mic over amps and letting them feedback.
So while Japanoise is a very prolific scene, saying nothing pivotal or influencial happened between Russolo and Merzbow is basically like saying nothing pivotal or influencial happened in rock between Chuck Berry and Nirvana, not entirely false but a bit reductive. :p

I went on my own because my friend bottled it, and as the gig went on I found myself absolutely lost in the noise, it was cathartic and relaxing and overwhelming and theraputic, unlike any other live show I've ever been to. I struggle to listen to a lost of noise/ PE etc on record, at least for an extended period of time, because it's really in the live environment that this stuff makes real sense.

Also there’s a great podcast called “Noisecast” that you’d might want to check out for good recommendations and insights to the scene and it’s history hosted by two veteran artists, Greh Holger who works under the name ‘Hivemind’ (and tons of other aliases), and Mike Connelly (also of tons of projects.)

To me pure harsh noise is mostly enjoyable live, in that setting I consider it kind of as a piece of performance art. However, if there´s something more to it, like some kind of rhythmic pulse or simple melodic tendencies in the background, I can very much enjoy listening to it like I would to any other kind of music. I find it to be the hardest, roughest, yet enjoyable sound known. More honestly raw and brutal than any other extreme genre.
When I try to explain it to someone who doesn´t understand, I ike to compare it to other types of art. I mean, people watch brutal horror movies, and that doesn't make for an all pleasant feeling. But still there's something in there that makes people like it... Also you can make the comparison with food. Some like very spicy/hot food, and that isn't an altogether nice feeling for the mouth, yet still they keep wanting that experience.
That being said, _of course_ noise music isn't for everyone. And that´s fine! Just like the hottest of the hottest curry isn't for everyone, or the most brutal horror movies imagined cant't ever be enjoyed by the vast majority either. You're not less of a music fan if you're not enjoying it. Me trying to explain it isn't an attempt of persuasion, it's just an attempt of making my personal taste more comprehensible.

I'm one of those people who isn't a fan of Noise or Experimental Music. I mostly like music that have a rhythm and a beat. I see people saying they don't like Kpop, Rap, or Pop. I respect people who like it. But it's kind of odd I don't see anyone making threads why they don't like it.

So, I am so, SO glad I found this video and gave Pulse Demon a try, I'm 20 minutes in and it is such a trip. Everything you said about this genre rings so true, even with just this little step into it. It's such a weird but oddly calming thing to relax to. I started by just trying to pick apart how each screaming, wailing, clanging and distorting sound could have been sampled or made, until my brain finally gave up several minutes and just let the noise swarm over it. It's like the album is grabbing you by the collar of your shirt, dragging you right up to its blank face and making you stare into its abyss until you finally just give up and ask "alright, what are you trying to tell me?" But there's no answer, it just IS. It's like a clamoring, clanging monstrosity of shrieking machinery and noise, a behemoth that scoops you up with skyscraper-long hands made of creaking, shrieking, crackling and warping mechanisms, dragging you deep inside of it until all you can see and hear is clamor, darkness, and noise. Such a fucking trip, honestly, thanks for the recommend, never would've expected to enjoy this genre.

About noise being use to relax: our brain is working all the time to give shape to the sensations arround us. We never hear pure sound or see pure light. Just put yourself in this situation: you are in your bed and you listen some random noise in the streets. You don't listen just to the sound, you listen something, your brain think: that is the sound of a car. Then, you listen a car. Our brain is doing all that work everytime.
But with noise music our brain can stop, there is nothing there to be shape. As the pitchfork quote said: it is pure sound. I listened Venereology a few times and I had the same experience that the youtuber comment in the video and it was a good experience.

Great video! Love how off the cuff this is. Here's some recs if you're looking for more!
Yellow Swans - Going Places: Probably the most accessible noise album I've ever heard. It somehow manages to be both harsh and absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a way to ease themselves into the genre!
Aaron Dilloway - Modern Jester: One of the most fascinating artists in the genre, an absolute legend in the world of tape music. This album is seriously creepy and mind-bending. Try listening to this with the lights off.
The Body & Full of Hell - One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache: Noise mixed with powerviolence, this is probably one of the most apt album titles out there. You'll seriously ache after you listen to this complete monster of an album. The body and full of hell compliment each other so seamlessly here, both bands feel like they become one.
Prurient - Frozen Niagara Falls: It would be disingenuous to say this is purely a noise affair. This album is LOADED with so many different styles and genres, but generally throughout the whole thing it feels alot like industrial and noise. This massive double album has so much to offer, and its diversity definitely allows for an easier listen for many new to this genre.
Merzbow - Hybrid Noisebloom: Probs my fav merzbow release so far! It's somehow psychedelic and its atmosphere is completely all enveloping and I really can't get enough of its sound. It's great!
But ya, there u go. Def check out that yellow swans album it's fucking amazing.

Merzbow used actual instruments and has compositions he can repeat. 99% of today’s “noise artists” are playing static through a filter and calling it music. Try and replicate a Merzbow track, you can’t. It’s art.

In terms of Merzbow’s output in the West, I liked the sci-fi abstract vibe gone with for Pulse Demon more than the aggressive death metal vibe of Venereology (though both are great listens). To me the beauty of Merzbow is less about aggression, and more about egoless chaos and abstraction. It is very meditative music once you get used to it.
