@@robertcartwright563 exactly …it’s great that he had them on. Save the extended long versions for the FM album oriented rock stations that started to come about at this time.
@@truebetold65 Thanks. First off, I remember that we were disappointed that Sullivan wasn't there personally to do their introduction. I remember that an off-stage announcer did the duties. Obviously the number was simply spliced into the actual show with Ed's intro. The audience (probably around 200), were enthusiastic and seated in folding chairs around this makeshift stage in the middle of the casino. I remember we moved on shortly after the Chamber's number because this wasn't like a normal show with one act after another introduced by Ed.
Hands down, one of the greatest psychedelic rock songs of all time. Sadly, this band is overlooked by most of the ranking lists for the past 50 plus years.
I am a child of the Era and know all the music of that Era, but I am shocked never heard of this band. The eleven minutes version of this song is mind blowing
The 1967 single was a Top 10 near-miss in America, spending five weeks at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1968. In Canada, the song reached No. 9. It is now considered one of the landmark rock songs of the psychedelic era. 😊
Great song and a great band. People had more talent back then. They really knew how to play instruments and sing. They didn't have to pre-record or alter the sound of their voices. This was real talent. You're awesome my cousins!!
this is the kind of song that once you hear it, it changes your whole perspective on music. I remember hearing it for the first time, and it's still great
Looking back at the Ed Sullivan show, its amazing how bands had to cram long songs into TWO MINUTES. At least we got to SEE amazing bands, but can you imagine the stress of having only 2 minutes to make your mark in the world?
For those that weren't around I saw these guys in concert four times in South Florida and each time they put on a great show. They truly are brothers from Mississippi.
I saw them in Washington, D.C. at the Ambassador Theater when this song was a gigantic hit. Though you won't see it in any tour archive, I assure you they were there. It must have been a quick pick up gig during their East Coast run...A quick look says they played D.A.R. Constitution Hall, but that's not where I saw them.
This is a good song. Everyone recognizes it. But I think the most remarkable thing about the song is the iconic studio version -- the production quality was excellent. It just had that vintage late sixties sound.
They play this song at my local Walgreens located on East Sunrise Blvd in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. It is played over the PA system in the store between the hours of 4 and 7 pm which is when they play music from the 60's. I guess they do it at all the other Walgreens stores as well. To say that it's an iconic song is an understatement. It takes me back to a time in which I hadn't even been born yet. It sounds crazy but it does. An amazing band from the 60's these Chamber Brothers.
1966 ~ Brother Marco and I played this when we were bored.. Mom used to yell at us to turn the damn RADIO down.... I don't know how we got this album we never had any money anyway... and so we survived our childhood.
The guy that played bass on the record played at our wedding! We knew the music store they used to come to in Brooklyn. All musicians & the mom made their first outfits!
I’m 75 and still love that song. I graduated high school the year of its original release. Young people rebelling and so intent on changing racial disharmony and bringing an end to the Vietnam war. A war in which over 58,000 young Americans died for absolutely nothing. One of the saddest times in American history
The crowd deserved the full version, a song that truly defined the era.
That's what I was thinking.

This was taped at the newly opened Circus Circus hotel in Las Vegas. I was with my parents watching this performance from the balcony.
That sounds awesome
I've always wondered where this was. You can see the slot machines at 01:54. Thanks for filling the blanks!
Was there a lot of people in the audience, what was the mood, and by the way you are a legend for just attending and your story.

The tone of his voice is otherworldly awesome. Perfect pitch with just enough gravel at the end. One of the best songs ever. Great singer great band.
Well said!
Massively underrated band
They call his voice whiskey salt. Janis Joplin had the female version of whiskey salt. JUST AWESOME!!!!
Rest in peace, Joe Chambers…
I saw them open for Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix at the Singer Bowl in NY in Aug. 1968. What a f'n concert!!!
right on !!
lucky :-)
Sweet: hopefully you still have the ticket stub
BEYOND epic ...(bowing to you now, as I am not worthy)

It is NOT possible to have "more cow bell." Iconic song.

You said it! They were just so exciting,in a way on the SLYville level from the shows I saw!

I know; it's crazy.
I guess the drummer was a Brother of a different mother😊
Yes, and the line ‘my soul’s been psychedelisized was censored by that old fogey Ed Solomon. 😢
These guys were on another level.. freaking epic. One of the best songs of the era.
one of the greatest songs of all time.
One of the greatest song endings of all time. A criminally underrated drummer that can keep time with the brothers..
Truly timeless.
I totally agree.

Best use of a cow bell ever great tune
This song burned the radio down. Fire.
Saw these guys live in 1974 ... awesome concert.

Still blows me away.
Who is still rocking to this jam in 2024 ?
HomeFront (2011)!
Try to imagine Ed Sullivan allowing the long version....
Ed Sullivan was the Man! He debuted so MANY groups for the first time, like the Beatles, the Stones, etc etc

One of the true anthems of the 1960's. Check out lead singer Lester Chambers when he sings and repeats the line "I have no home." Really moving.
These are the COOL CATS of our generation. Listen to them sing 'PEOPLE GET READY'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There version of People get Ready on this album is unsurpassed in my opinion! Great Album and an excellent Band!
I’ve always liked So Tired, a slow bluesy tune. The Brothers natural harmony blends perfectly to reflect the sad, weary mood of the song.
Absolutely agree!
Time Has Come Today is a great song off a great album.
I like their cover of In the Midnight Hour, Romeo and Juliet written by Lester Chambers, the guy on the cowbell.
