Nick Macchiavelli the ones here do not use any zf transmission, instead they use a dual clutch transmission developed by fiat. These were terrible transmissions that were replaced by a tradiontional 6 speed but not even this fixed all of its problems.

I'd have to disagree, Joshua. Look at Edmunds.com, Cars.com, Kelly BB. By and large owners (consumers) report positive experiences with their 500L's. I would agree that the disparity between professional reviewers' opinions and actual owners' experiences shows a pretty big divide. I don't know what can explain that, but I will say that the car is charming and endearing if your mind is open to it. Perhaps professional reviewers get jaded by all the expensive machinery they get to test. Of course the 500L has its own unique look- pretty polarizing, I guess. Personally I didn't like it at first, but it has really grown on me (I can say the same about much of my favorite music!). A lot of reviewers seem to key on its appearance (in a negative way), and when they do it's almost certain the general tone of the review will be negative. The 500L isn't necessarily unique in this regard- I imagine most cars that are found to be ugly by reviewers tend to get negative review overall.
Anyway, we've had our 500L in eastern PA since early 2014. It now has about 34,000 miles, and we've had no problems to speak of (early on there were a few updates on the flashes for the transmission shift module, body control module, U Connect, and an airbag recall- all taken care of under warranty and with minimal hassle while the car was in for regular service). The dual dry clutch transmission has been great. US. owners who complained of poor reliability of early 500L's were most frequently due to a lack of understanding of how to operate this transmission- it is different from a traditional torque converter auto trans. If these owners were to have read and headed the owners manual, they most likely could have avoided some grief.
Ive been getting excellent fuel economy with our Elle, especially if I don't drive it aggressively (38-40 mpg in a mix of rural, city and interstate highway). I realize I'm a bit of an outlier in this regard, but I don't really hyper-mile it. I just try to be a little thoughtful in how I drive it. And, the Dual Dry Clutch transmission helps a bit here- said to be about 10% more fuel efficient than a traditional torque converter automatic (and that's about what you see in EPA rating differences between the 500L equipped with the DDCT and the 500L equipped with the Aisin 6-speed auto). I have no problem beating the EPA ratings by the way, which were 25 city/33 highway.
We've found our 500L to be spacious with very comfortable seating,It has great visibility, it rides great, and can be quite fun to drive for what it is. One thing I've noticed- I'm never not aware that I'm driving something a little different. So a car like that won't be everyone's cup of tea, to be sure. But if you're in the market for a big people hauler with a small foot print, you owe it to yourself to check the 500L out. The changes for 2018 make it that much better.

The dual clutch transmission in the US was replaced by a 6 speed Aisin Japanese made transmission starting with the 2015 model year. I have had both versions, the Aisin is a big improvement. The person claiming they still use the dual clutch has no knowledge of the car

@@dragonpearlz6316 I know exactly what you mean. I have a 2014 500L trekking and I love the different aspect from most cars about it.
