    If I had heard this beautiful flute music 13 years ago, I would have bought a flute then and started learning to play it. By now I might be at least half that good. I just bought my first flute in December, 2022. Since I am 83 I probably won't make it, but I can still enjoy the journey and enjoy beautiful presentations like this one. 🥰

      @@peacauveI was trying to play "Colors of the Wind" by using the printed music and really struggling. Then one day I took my flute with me and my poodle to the dog park. I discovered I could play the song better without the written music and several other songs. I could never do this with other instruments. It's like the flute is more a part of us. 🥰

    I don't know if you're still reading comments, Mr. August, but watching this video caused me to contact Geoffrey Ellis and purchase this flute because I've never heard a more beautiful song in my life, and I'm 58. It's my first rim blown flute, so being long, it's not the most easy one to learn on. I've had it a week now and can hit most notes in 3 octaves, but it never goes perfectly. I'm still experimenting with breath pressure, lip position, flute angle,and inward pressure into my chin. So now, after messing around a bit (with MUCH experimentation), I am even more impressed with your skills. You change octaves seamlessly, running up and down scales and changing octaves mid scale as if it's a piano, and it most certainly is not.
    This is just to say I am in awe of your skill and creativity and to thank you for convincing me to try this beautiful instrument. There's quite a learning curve, but it's also very gratifying. And when those notes go together correctly, it is an amazing sound. THANK YOU, SIR!

    I just wanted to tell you how much this music has inspired and influenced me. I love playing music and can play quite a few different instruments at varying skill levels, but for whatever reasons, the flute was not an instrument I ever gave any thought to. My dearest friend began playing Native American flutes after attending a powwow. His enthusiasm sparked a small interest within me, but it was not until I discovered THIS video that I began what has become something of a love affair and obsession with rim-blown flutes, particularly the replica "Anasazi" (i.e. pre-historic Pueblo flutes found in a cave) and the Arabian Ney. There is something about the vibration of the sound made by that big Pueblo flute that hits me like no other sound ever has. It's also perhaps the most challenging instrument I've ever attempted. It took me a LONG time to figure out the basic embouchure to make my own Anasazi flute say anything at all, and I still can't quite make it sing like you do. But the journey has been amazing and it might not have started at all if not for you. Thanks for the inspiration!

      @@mishterpreshident I should also tell you to be careful that your tuning does not go flat as you play notes near the register shift (the octave). It is a common problem that people do not tighten their embouchure as they play higher notes, resulting in them being flat. The best thing you can do is play long, straight tones. Not for length's sake, but to learn to control the tone, or bring it back if you lose it (we are always losing it), and checking your tuning too.

    • @mishterpreshident
      @mishterpreshident Год назад +1

      @@scottaugust I've been working on the long notes as you suggested. It's been very useful to focus on one note for a time, making tiny adjustments to embouchure to either clean up the tone or raise it to the correct pitch. I also started using a tuner. Mapped out all the fingerings to their proper note, and then I practice with the tuner on. I watch the needle when I change notes, then hold that note and adjust embouchure until I've raised the needle to center. I lose it a lot. It's funny, I can play beautifully for a few seconds or minutes, then lose the sweet-spot entirely and spend several seconds trying to reacquire it. So easy to lose but so amazing when it's right! Thanks again Scott.

    • @scottaugust
      @scottaugust  Год назад +1

      @@mishterpreshident A big part of long tones is trying to bring back the tone when you lose it. Like balancing on a bike, we are always loosing the balance/tone, but we learn to bring it back...eventually so quickly that we are not even aware of it..

      Hey Scott, have you ever used any flute (or other instrument) tuned in Solfeggio tones or with a 432 hz tuning (instead of 440 hz)? 432 hz is supposed to be the natural healing frequency of Mother Earth. 440 hz was used to offset overtone feed back in earlier recordings and broadcasts (pre-WWII), and is considered by some as an abomination and the cause of all discord in the present world.

      I don't know enough about middle eastern music to say for sure, but I doubt it. This flute will basically play in a major pentatonic, and except for a minor 3rd does not play chromatic notes. For example, it can't play a Phrygian dominant scale. The Xiao would be a much better choice. Thanks for listening.
