  • Taylor Swift is one of the most successful music artists in the history of the music industry. But while I admire her success from an economic standpoint, her latest album doesn’t represent that same type of achievement.
To put it more frankly, it is incredibly lacklustre and downright average. Which puts into question how she is still able to achieve so much by producing so little? The insane fandom and attention she has received is a whole other ball game when it comes to understanding the psychology of a group of fans who are insanely obsessed with her, but that’s a whole other study in itself and one that I won’t go into here. Suffice it to say, the world of swifties is a world that makes me fear for humanity.
But I do want to discuss the musical side of things and give you my real-time listening feedback, thoughts, and opinions on this latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. From a musical point of view, it does not make sense why she is receiving so much hype and praise for music that just does not sound any good.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying Taylor Swift doesn’t have any talent, and for what it’s worth if you like her new music, then that’s fine by me. But in my view, her new songs are a far cry from that once youthful country singer who had so much to say with genuine soulful country music that sounded both melodic and invigorating until she evolved into this money-making machine of a pop princess with music that feels boring and uninspiring and devoid of anything interesting.

What is The Tortured Poets Department?
The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It was written and produced by Swift, Jack Antonoff, and Aaron Dessner, and released on April 19, 2024, via Republic Records. Swift announced the album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for her preceding work, Midnights (2022). The Tortured Poets Department was expanded into a double album upon release, subtitled The Anthology, featuring a surprise second volume of songs.
Swift conceived The Tortured Poets Department shortly after finishing work on Midnights and continued developing it during the Eras Tour (2023-2024), her ongoing sixth concert tour. She described The Tortured Poets Department as her "lifeline" album, conceived as a culmination of her imperative songwriting. It contains 31 songs across its two volumes, with the American rapper Post Malone featuring on the opening track and lead single, "Fortnight", and the English indie rock band Florence and the Machine on the track "Florida!!!".
A minimalist synth-pop and folk-pop effort with rock and country stylings, The Tortured Poets Department consists of largely midtempo songs driven by synthesizers and drum machines alongside organic instruments such as piano and guitar. Its subject matter focuses on Swift's psyche, exploring her outlook on her public and private lives using introspective storytelling. The lyrical content is characterized by themes of sorrow, self-awareness, melodrama, and humor. The album polarized critics: most reviews were positive and praised Swift's cathartic songwriting for its emotional resonance and wit, while the rest suggested a lack of lyrical profundity; some critics described the album's production as tasteful, while others found it uninventive.
Commercially, The Tortured Poets Department broke a string of records globally and topped the official charts in 13 countries. It gained the highest single-day streams for an album on the streaming platform Spotify. In the United States, the album sold 2.6 million album-equivalent units in its first week, the biggest sales week of her career and her record-extending seventh release to open with over a million units in the country. The Tortured Poets Department also became the fastest-selling album of the 2020s decade in the United Kingdom, and the first album to monopolize the top 10 positions of Australia's ARIA Singles Chart.
And if you’re still reading this - hello.

could you provide examples of where I "make fun of, put down or shame people for simply liking what they enjoy"? To my knowledge, the only time I ever imply something like this is by mentioning the world of swifties and the crazy obsession people have with her, which is more about the way music fans have tendencies to go too far when it comes to idolizing individuals to the point of having stalker/fanatic tendencies and reactions to someone's music. But I do also add that "I’m not saying Taylor Swift doesn’t have any talent and for what it’s worth, if you like her new music then that’s fine by me". So, if you enjoy Taylor Swift then that's genuinely okay and I have nothing against it. Moreover, I actually enjoyed her early work e.g., the album Fearless and also add that in the introduction. My intention wasn't to promote "extra hate for no reason" or to shame anyone who enjoyed her music. I am just stating my thoughts, opinions and feelings to how I reacted to her latest music. Nothing more.

more so from what I see in the comments, and online in general from ts haters. But yes, there was that little bit in the beginning where you say “the world of swifties makes me fearful for humanity” i consider myself a swiftie, but under no circumstances have I ever thought of stalking or idolizing her to an extreme etc. generalizing all swifties like that always rubs me the wrong way, and in my experience keeps me from expressing my joy I get from listening to her music because I don’t want people thinking im obsessed or an extreme fanatic with crazy tendencies… I think your review was great, it’s just the extreme haters that dog pile on and degrade the fan base for liking her music.

@@tim_music9679 the fan base doesn't get dogged on, "swifties" get dogged on. Someone who enjoys an artist for their art should be and is left alone, people who subscribe to a group who idolize someone or something for extreme reasons, to the point they'll antagonize "outsiders", get dogged on. Taylor Swift fans probably enjoy her music for shared empathic lyrics or for her, what music academics might call, sugary-sweet, poppy music. Swifties enjoy her, in every way conceivable, creepy or not. Swifties are a group of very like-minded people with very specific tastes in music and idols. Swifties are not an ethnic group of different minded individuals, they're not a overall music "style" with different interpretations, we don't "generalize" swifties because there is no individualism to be generalized. They pressure Taylor Swift fans to be Swifties and antagonize everyone else. If you would still like to say you are part of that group without sharing their sensibilities, then at the very least understand no criticism is directed towards you or anyone else like you, and any dogging or making-fun-of is directed towards the widely-accepted definition of "Swifty". And lastly, any dogging about Taylor Swift having bad music is just a part of the age-old argument of who's music is better and not actually a serious topic unless discussed by experts.
      Sincerely,

This album is a masterpiece. Very heartfelt, vulnerable, clever and genuine which is what you always get with a Taylor album. You either like that or you don't but her music is definitely not bad or mediocre. I understand Taylor not being every ones taste but to say she is generic music is just plain wrong. I do not and never will understand where this critique comes from unless you are someone that has only heard her singles (which are all bops btw, I love all of her singles.)

Music tastes are subjective so while I may speak in a sense that I have this "objective opinion that triumphs everyone else's and this is what it is etc.", I mention in the introduction that "I’m not saying Taylor Swift doesn’t have any talent and for what it’s worth, if you like her new music then that’s fine by me." which implies that sentiment. To me personally, I much much prefer her early work and just listening to the album Fearless is so different not just when it comes to a country guitar musical feel but the way the lyrics written are also catchier and in my eyes, they speak more appropriately to where she was in that time of her life, her age and her experiences.
With TTPD, it's like all of the country soul has been stripped away and replaced with generic pop beats with lyrics that match. But again, this is just how I feel and if the songs speak to you or are something that you really enjoy, then all the merrier. Please don't let my opinions ruin that experience for you and I'm sure there are songs from other artists you don't enjoy but that I would etc.

I appreciate your analysis and agree. So many incensed Swifties in your comments! Jeez
This album from the lyrics to the music is immature. It seems like a first draft to me that needed a year of refinement before release. She is better than this.
I also wish I could hear some happy tracks. This whole album is negative. And the lyrics feel contrived, in contrast to All Too Well, for instance, which was such a cohesive song that really moved me and took you from the beginning of the relationship to the end in one song and really made you feel the love and loss. Or Back to December which is also so tender and takes personal responsibility.
From this album I really enjoy Fortnight, Down Bad, and But Daddy I Love Him for the catchiness but not the lyrics, (and there are some lyrics in random other songs such as “old habits die screaming” that I like despite the song they’re in.) The rest I will quickly forget and move on from.

The worth of your opinion is non existent if you go into an album with the mindset that you're going to hate it, you also hate the artist so what even is the point? There's a difference between criticism and hate, this feels more like hate. The comment section is filled with hateful comments insulting taylor, her music and the people that listen to it. A reviewer shouldn't act like the world revolves around them, your preferences aren't the only ones that matter and you shouldn't insult people just because they like something that you don't. This video was probably made after one listen, you don't make a "review" after one listen.

    • @motioninart
      @motioninart  2 месяца назад +4

How do you know I hate the artist? For what it's worth, I mention how I enjoyed her early work which to me, felt like it had more country soul that was both melodic and catchy with lyrics that felt more appropriate (or that spoke to me more so). While I am disappointed with her evolution into this massive mainstream pop princess that to me, is a far cry from her origins as a country artist, I also can't hate her success and mention how I admire what she's been able to achieve. It might not be a music taste for me but that's fine if it is for others. I'll also add that I'm not a hater of the pop music industry altogether and I love hearing catchy songs in general. If it's a good song, it's a good song regardless of the genre or who has produced it.
But I'll also admit, there was a part of me that wasn't looking forward to hearing this new album and after hearing a couple songs before properly listening to it all, it only cemented that idea even further. However, as I continued listening, I did actually find myself enjoying some parts of songs for example, as I talk about while listening to "Down Bad" which actually has some interesting and nice flourishes to it. It's probably one of my "favourite" songs from this album and definitely one of the better ones from it. I also enjoyed the song "loml" for its simplicity and beautiful piano melody that wasn't this general synthwave pop. "Clara Bow" also has a great guitar riff and it was produced by Aaron Dessner from The National which is a surprising collaboration that I enjoyed more so compared to other songs on this album.
Whether this is a complete review or not is up to semantics and interpretation. In some senses, you can obviously listen to a song for the first time and give your initial feedback as a review to a friend etc. You can listen to it again and again some more and then do the same. In either way, I omitted the word review from the introduction or title and mentioned that this is a video where I "give you my real-time listening feedback, thoughts and opinions on this latest album". I've tried to do my best to provide a "review" in real-time while listening to the songs but my opinions could (and probably will) be refined more so over time to form a more complete/thorough/detailed review.
Moreover, could you accept such a review if it went against your belief on what you felt for the music? For me, I don't think you have to necessarily agree with every critic because at the end of the day, if you enjoyed the music and if you enjoyed what it made you feel, then who is someone else to dictate how you should feel?

The act of critiquing someone in terms of anything they do is usually viewed in a negative light and for good reason - most people just judge but do not produce anything themselves or they judge too harshly, negatively without acknowledging anything good in life and moreover, what is the point of going out of your way to say negative things about anything if it's something that you clearly don't like but could be something others enjoy.
All things considered, the aim of what I see criticism as is to 1) discover and find anything new that is worthwhile and 2) to provide an opinion on whether something is good or bad. If you view my channel, I talk alot about some great bodies of work and even in this review, I mention some surprisingly good aspects about songs e.g., "Down Bad". But if someone sees something as bad and explains why they think so, particularly if they contrast it with something good (e.g., I mention Taylor's early works compared to her latest music), then there is still value in hearing out an opinion regardless. It may speak to you or it may speak to others who share the same view. It may challenge your pre-existing beliefs or change them or even reinforce them. Either way, it sparks an interesting discussion and debate that could be useful and entertaining.
I don't disagree that whatever the case, the "everybody's a critic, nobody's an artist" sentiment still prevails. But conversely, has there never been anything that you have found to be bad and that others have felt good but which you shared your opinion of with a friend etc.? Genuinely curious

I can understand how this album wouldn’t be for everyone but if you listen to the comments she’s made about the album, this was a cathartic piece of work that she needed to make for HERSELF. She was happy people loved it (which a lot of swifties do) but I don’t think she made this album for the pop mainstream and media, etc. She needed to write this like people journal and write poems when they’re hurt in order to process and heal. And I think to some people it could seem boring musically but the lyrics are BEAUTIFUL. Especially when you take the time to really listen and uncover the story behind it and what she’s actually talking about. It’s actually a beautifully written, heart-wrenching album about loss and heartache in all its forms. Which anyone would have to be in the right mindset to listen to and appreciate. Just like sometimes you’re in the mood to watch a comedy or sometimes a murder mystery or sometimes a sad love story movie. That doesn’t mean it’s bad just because you weren’t in the right mindset to receive it well. And you have to look at Taylor as an artist in her entirety. Look how much she has had to recreate herself and has done so successfully all do to her own talent, story telling and musical prowess. That in of itself is unlike anyone has been able to do before. So who cares if this album isn’t your taste. It’s art. And art comes in many forms. You don’t have to love it but I think to negatively critique anyone’s art is coming from a very ego-driven state of somehow believing this opinion of yours really matters. Because you say it’s boring, than it is. Art is subjective. I think this somehow makes yourself feel better about yourself and cool and more important and that’s why you put videos out like this. If you don’t like it, just don’t listen to it. Period. Be a cheerleader of art instead and say “you know what Taylor is super talented but this isn’t my cup of tea at the very moment.” And that’s it. Nothing else needs to be said. Anything more is just tearing someone and their art down. All For clickbait and views.

My opening lines state "Taylor Swift is one of the most successful music artists in the history of the entire music industry. But while I admire her success from an economic standpoint, her latest album is a body of work that doesn’t represent that same type of achievement." - which is in an effort to mention and acknowledge how I respect her achievements and contributions from an economic standpoint. She is literally one of the best selling artists of all time and I state that in the introduction.
How do you know that this kind of music is not my type nor that I am the demographic? I add that I enjoyed her early work and the album Fearless is something that I actually really enjoy because of the country soul and catchy melody that is there. For what it's worth, songs about past relationships and ex-partners or romantic songs is something I can enjoy when they are done well. In this particular instance, I haven't enjoyed her take on it but if that's something others do, then that's fine by me. Either way it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things because I'm just a voice on the internet while she is a voice to so many more and in a good way (which is why I admire her success). Both of us can co-exist no?

You keep replying this but she isn't a country artist anymore. She's just an artist and likes to float around genres. Why is that bad? And when did it become a standard that all music has to be groundbreaking to be worth anything? That's a very pretentious take on art and isn't something to be celebrated or perpetuated. If you don't like the album fine, but move on. Other people are allowed to enjoy things you don't and artists should be allowed to release whatever they want without it being 5 stars. Personally, I think it's a great thing that this album isn't filtered or edited. To me, it shows that Taylor Swift for once doesn't care about getting a Grammy or being perfect. I found it very concerning that she admitted in her documentary that external validation, praise, and getting people to clap was all she lived for. She was in actual tears reputation didn't get nominated for anything, and while that can be disappointing, it shouldn't be the end of the world. Her reaction made it apparent it felt like the end of the world to her, and that's not what making art should be. This album being unflitered and messy shows character growth in that aspect.

There isn't a single artist whose mainstream songs don't talk about love or break-ups.
Taylor has a lot of songs that aren't about girlfriends and boyfriends
"Wise men once read fake news
      And they believed it
      Jackals raised their hackles
      You couldn't conceive it
      You were sleeping soundly
When they dragged you from your bed
And I tried to warn you about them"

You say this album sounds stale. This video sounds stale. You sound like you're just taking to someone who isn't there? I'm pretty sure I've watched your stuff before and I've never felt this bored listening to you talk. Is everything okay? Personally, I think she sounds like she's trying to be deeper than she is and is really annoying for her lyrics to be so obviously specific and about specific people. Can't relate to any of it.

Listening to this album put me to sleep
In all seriousness though, this is a new format I’m experimenting with compared to my previous videos. In an effort to release more content regularly, I’ve opted in for a conversational “off the fly” approach but I appreciate your constructive feedback cause it sounds like I may have overdone it with the casual nature and need to work on the energy levels. Everything is okay personally though but thank you for checking and letting me know. Moreover, I agree with your last statement about her latest work cause in a nutshell that’s how I feel. Except I would say she isn’t too specific and what I hate is how general and bland everything is. I would actually like more detail instead of this soppy melodramatic romance drama.

I find the need to relate to song lyrics in order to enjoy them rather creepy. Why do you need to live the same life experiences as a singer to enjoy a song ????
I've never been in a toxic relationship and I've never suffered or cried because of a heartbreak yet I've sung along hundreds of break-up songs because they were nice to listen to.

@@altsam9 if you find that the case, I wonder what you think of all her fans (the swifties) who enjoy listening to her music because of relatable experiences. Experiences that Taylor herself has talked about as to why she writes music but refuses to provide names of ex-boyfriends so that fans listening could picture themselves with their own history of an ex-boyfriend etc. Genuinely curious.
Maybe by relate to songs you're implying that there is a wish to be placed into her shoes directly to live out those same experiences and to have the need to physically be in her body/mind like Being John Malkovich, and thus the creepy nature of that. That is not at all what I was going for when I said relate and perhaps even the word relate isn't the correct term here.
Relate in that, while I might not be able to have the same experience as an artist (person etc.), there should at least be enough storytelling techniques (figurative imagery, details, analogies, similes) that could paint the picture for me so that it then places me in that situation and in turn, could hold some lessons/aspects that are not to dissimilar to something I would have gone through in life. In my view, if you can connect with an artist through their lyrics, then such a feeling of relating to them isn't creepy and is actually incredibly meaningful and speaks to the whole power of music/movies/art. But even if you cannot relate at all, you should still somehow be able to see their point of view or an interesting experience shared that makes you enjoy their work regardless of whether it is something you went through. It can still speak to you even if it's not something you directly experienced.
Does that make sense or have I missed your point completely?

It feels like she's still 15. Sidenote: I wonder what her parents think about her relationship history and the world of swifties.

it's a common phrase - she's not literally running to her daddy.
it's a song. it's a reference to the little mermaid. obviously she exaggerates experiences in her songs

It's a Little Mermaid reference and the song is about people that judge her for who she chooses to date. People that hate on Taylor really do out themselves tbh. Not that bright.

      @motioninart  2 месяца назад

@@Ninaajdin is it though? as @becksnnc mentioned, I took it as a song "about people that judge her for who she chooses to date" or in this particular case, about some guy specifically.
