A beautiful border balad. Filmed at Scott's view near Melrose. Borders folklore says that when Sir walter Scott's funeral cortiege reached this point, the leading horse stopped of it's own accord as if in final tribute to its master. The Corries have done this well written ballad justice. A beautiful rendition!

One of Ronnie Browne's best solos with The Corries. The combolins give it an additional magic touch, and his whistling is sublime!

Growing up in England in the 90s I listened tot he same music as my mates; mainly indie guitar and rave music. But...I still loved the music I heard at home from my Aberdonian parents...especially the Corries. My mates used to sneer when I'd play this, but I didn't care. When most of those other bands we listened to are already long forgotton, I'm still listening to and loving the Corries.

Why weep ye by the tide, lady
Why weep ye by the tide?
I'll wed ye to my youngest son
And you will be his bride
And you will be his bride, lady
    Sae comely to be seen
And aye she let the tears doon fa'
    For Jock o' Hazeldean.
Now let this willfu' grief be done
And dry ya cheek sae pale
Young Frank is chief of Errington
    And laird o' Langley-dale
His step is first in peaceful ha'
    His sword in battle keen
But aye she let the tears doon fa'
    For Jock o' Hazeldean.
A chain of gold you shall not lack
Nor braid to bind your hair
Nor mettled hound, nor managed hawk
    Nor palfrey fresh and fair.
And you, the foremost o' them a'll
    Will ride our forrest queen
But aye she let the tears doon fa'
    For Jock o' Hazeldean.
The church was deck'd at morningtide
    The tapers glimmer'd fair
The priest and bridegroom wait the bride
And dame and knight are there
They sought her baith by bower and ha'
    The lady was nae seen
She's o'er the border and awa'
    Wi' Jock o' Hazeldean.

There is enough to do I am sure that even if you didn't stay in Scotland, you could find some way to help. Our clan organization here in the states is reclaiming old clan lands around Loch Long and Loch Lohmond and creating a highland cultural center so that students can study how life was when the clans were still functioning. Take care my friend.

I come from Highland stock but I am a Scots-American. I would gladly come to Scotland and help her however I could to gain her independence. Patriotism is not dead in Scotland, it has merely laid dormant and simply needs to be awakened again to revive the desire and the fight. Don't fret, we Scots across the water look to the day Scotland will be independant and are willing to pitch in to help it happen. Alba Gu Brath!

One can be as proud of their Scottish ancestry as any other part of who they are. Some may even choose to embrace it more. The point is that in their veins is blood that is Scottish. As to the issue of independence, I have relatives and friends who live in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness and I can tell you that independence is on their minds with the exception of the elders who regard it with some trepedation because of the unknown that comes with such a move.

Actually this melody is much older than Sir Walter Scott's poem and previously had its own lyrics. He took his poem from the original multitude of verses and abridged it into it's better known form as heard here.

  • @ZeitgeistWI
    @ZeitgeistWI 17 лет назад +12

I know that many are bitter about the "united kingdom" and Scotland's place in the grand scheme but the wonderful thing about history is that it can help us to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. All Scots, even those across the pond here in America, need to pitch in and work together to realize an independant Scotland. It can be done and it will be done. Thank you friend for your comment.

An independent Scotland in the EU is a contradiction in term and isn't real independence. The SNP aren't even real nationalists to begin with, they are pseudo nationalists at best with a cmarxist sgends. They've simply hijacked the term to.push their globalist nonsense, CRT crap onto young children, delegated bames with a victim complex to rubbish indiginious Scots . But basically trying to push for things which benefit their own ethnic groups.
So yes, I too would like an independent Scotland, but one which is away from both the SNP and the EU.

A reply to the reply. Please don't misunderstand the preservation of culture and the preservation for future generations as "romantic bullshit" or that all anyone thinks of when thinking of Scotland is the Corries, kilts and clans. Many look at the entirety of history and see that there is much there to be proud of. Mixed ancestry at this point is pretty much a given as Scots who moved abroad probably married into other cultures so that is a mute point. That doesn't make you any less Scottish.
