The way to tell the difference from the M-1 and M-3 is the cab windows. The M-1 slides up and down while the M-3 slides back and forth.. The M1 horn is a Leslie S44, The M-3 Uses the Leslie S2M and the M-7 uses The Leslie RS2M..
The other noticeable differences between the two are that M-1s have banners on the side that used to display the destination, but are still there, M-3s do not have them, while M-3s have vents on the center window that is part of the HVAC system where the M-1s do not have these vents.
M3s were much more scarce than the M1s, meaning you wouldn't see them as often. Also, LIRR would always mix M3s into sets with M1s, meaning the chances of one on the lead would be even smaller.
I love the m-1 and m-3 railcar and their horns
Sounds more like a steam whistle
Flat wheels were common on this car type (GOOD QUALITY FOR A 1991 VIDEO) +1 LIKE
catching a M3 with a M1 horn is very rare! I caught one only 1 time.

@@Mimi-ci3fk thats cursed

@Gold Gamer I see it when I go to school

If only you got the nyc redbirds with this cam i would like that
M1s had Leslie S44s. The M3s mainly have Leslie S2Ms, while the M7 has the newer Leslie RS2M.
And now the M9s have a Nathan K2H horn

I love the M1 it's my favorite railcar on mta lirr
I started a drawing tribute to the M1 in its original configuration ( no headlights overhead)
the m1 would be pretty rare if it was still here
i love the m1 horn
Those trains came out in the early 90s long time ago win they was new.
The M3s here we're built between 1984-1986. So those trains weren't really new when those videos were taken.
The M1s were made in 1968-1971 for LIRR and 1971-1973 for Penn central which it’s Metro North
You made this when I was not born
How come M1 are no longer in service

Joe's World of Train's and Plane's You didn’t answer my question. Why are M1s not in service anymore
Joe's World of Train's and Plane's They could’ve still kept it. I like old stuff
@@train259 you are dumb
They had aged in nearly 50 years, and it was time to call it off service for better equipment

Your a young person....Those headlights were added many years later.....this must be prior to 1995
Cold Spring Harbor train station?
The Metropolitans will be LIRR's favorite past time. If you don't believe me then wait, and see.
Nice meet. Looks like CHS
Love m1 and m3s
Mark are those M-1s at the 2:40 point? I think they are due to the type of horn I'm hearing. What kind of horns do the M-1, M-3, and M-7 have?
M1s have Leslie S44s M3s have Leslie S2Ms and M7s had Leslie RS2Ms
Love the M1 horns!!!
Best horns
They should mix in some M3's with M7's lol. that'd be interesting but i dont think its possible to do so.

@@train259 oh. Welp
Soon the M3s will be retired and replaced by Kawasaki M9s already in service
There is no such thing as m1
They are probably a m1 but I think there are only m3 m7 and m9 because i never seen a m1 in my life that is why I disagree
Oh btw the m3 are actually retiring in May of 2019
