Every AMD FX RUclips comment section boils down to two types of comments. It's either a fondness for them, "I remember my first computer used an FX cpu and it lasted me 10 years; such a great CPU!" or "I'm still rocking my 8350 still going strong!". The other comments are like, "OMG AMD FX CPU'S ARE TRASH!!!!!" or essentially "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!!!!!" posts. 😄

Going from a 7770 to an RX580 is a huge jump and a really nice pairing with your 8320. I probably would have tried to max the RAM out to 32GB if your motherboard supported it but 16GB should still be serviceable. The 1TB SSD is a great upgrade too. About 7 years ago I put together two computers, one for my father in law and one for my nephew, that are both rocking an 8320e for basic browsing and office work. I got a hell of a deal at Microcenter and paid $90 for the 8320e and it came with a free motherboard so the value that it provided was just insane at the time. These will probably last another 10 years barring hardware failure.

The picture quality was much better than I expected any 1080p to be. He was flooded! The colors popped so well...and doom ran at over 100 fps on the over clocked 6300 and 570 combo

@@Toxic2T for editing and newer games yes, the 6100 should outperform the 4300 because of the extra 2 cores. And the 6350 is a newer architecture (Piledriver vs Bulldozer), so it has a slight increase in clocks and performance. This makes it an "ideal" upgrade, and I say that with quotes because the best upgrade would be the 8350, but it has almost thrice the price, at least on Aliexpress. In fact, I would argue it's better to get a 6300, slightly slower but also cheaper and with less TDP (95w vs 125w), this is useful to avoid playing roulette with the motherboard's VRMs, some state they support 125w CPUs but they actually don't.

HOWEVER it's clear to me how stupid I was to upgrade to the Core i7 4790K despite the massive single-core performance uplift I got in 2015 from the upgrade. The FX 8350 has aged remarkably well for be such a honestly kinda middling CPU over the years. It somehow chugs along and if I had stuck with it probably proved its value. Posted this comment elsewhere, and will just copy paste it here, as it reflects my extensive experience with the FX line:
I had been using a FX 8350 extensively since 2017. From 2017-2019 in a primary gaming pc with a GTX 1080, and after that, in a secondary build, first with a RX 470, and later with a GTX 970, then a 1660 Super. Since I collect hardware I actually have a decent chunk of FX/AM3+ stuff on hand, along with AM2/AM2+, LGA 775, LGA 1151 etc. Over the past year I had been going back and testing titles released from 2017 to now on the FX 8350. I have some of the results posted on videos on my channel from this testing. First, because it should be stated. People tend to confuse this chip as being meant to contend with the i7 on the market at its launch. It wasn't. It was released in the same price bracket as the i5. Two, its launch was during the heyday of Windows 7 and 8. Neither of which were able to fully utilize the cpu properly. Better utilization did not happen until late into Windows 7 life, and during Windows 10.
Third, the FX cpu line was released during a time when games were preferring single core optimization. Many games did not utilize more than two to three cores at once. You combine this with it being during a time when even the OS did not favor the cpu, and you end up with issues. Regardless of this, it actually did run games quite well. It wasn't like you were ever suffering from extremely low frame rates. And you could have honestly closed the gap more by just maxing out visuals and cranking the resolution up to where the gpu became the bottleneck, which is what I did when I was running a GTX 1080 with my FX. Four, when Windows 10 found its footing, and game developers finally did start to break away from the single core optimization doctrine, this processor line, specifically the six and eight core releases, started to make decent gains over their old 4 core/4 thread nemesis the old i5 lines.
Which takes me to 2017 on up. I have run the 8350 against the i5 6400 in current games. You start to see it easily overtake the i5 in modern games from the last few years. Especially in the last two years. Games like Elden Ring, Sniper Elite V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, etc. You also start to notice the i5 get choked out when it comes to getting visuals loaded in a timely manner. This especially affected Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and was very noticeable during its bench test. In Elden Ring enemies would simply not stay rendered (this issue pretty much plagues all older 4 core/4 thread processors with this game). In something like World of Tanks using its current Core engine, the i5 6400 would get chocked out at times if I was using discord while running the game, or having any other background task going on like recording gameplay. The 8350 did not suffer the same issues.
All that being said, my last test run involved with the FX 8350 paired with a RTX 2070 Super was using The Last of Us, Company of Heroes 3, and Dead Space Remastered. And this is finally where things really go south for the FX 8350. 2023 is the year of poorly optimized, bug riddled releases. And in the case of the last three games mentioned, only Company of Heroes 3 ran well. As in, you could get into a game easily, and the avg FPS of 50-60 was maintained throughout a heavy 4v4 match. Dead Space, well.... starting the game fresh, the initial space scene where the video message from Nicole is zoomed in. During that moment fps averaged into the low twenties at best. Its clearly a bug issue of some type, or a optimization issue, but it is there and it was painful. Due to this I just copied my save file over from my main gaming pc and ran the game during chapter 7. Gameplay itself was smooth, staying in the 40-70 zone depending on where you were. There was some frame dropping, but it wasnt major or anything and did not disturb combat situations.
The Last of Us was tested during patch 1.0.3.0. Funny enough the game did not crash at all, not even during the 40 min shader compilation. However in game, because the way that game loads in assets during actual gameplay, all cores/threads stayed maxed at 100 percent. If everything loaded in, you got a average between 30-40 fps. If stuff was loading in, the framerate dropped into the twenties. Gameplay may have improved since then. I have not bothered to test further with newer patches on that setup. But basically its indicative of the times. This processors magic moment where it got to shine the most really fell in during 2016-2021 time frame. 2022 was still kind to it, but just in general it was starting to really show its age. 2023 is going to be much harsher, at least when it concerns "AAA titles" released because of how poorly optimized things are going to be to where processors will have to brute force their way through issues.
It is one of those things where I wouldn't be surprised if someone started to compile a database for the FX line stating what new game releases work well, and which ones don't. Maybe someone on Vogons will start doing that, who knows. But as is, for basically a 10 year old processor, it was much more future proof and bang for buck than the 1st to 7th gen i5 line, and it can still run quite a bit of stuff being released well still. And when you factor in processors like the i5 7600k were released during a time when it was already evident that 4 core/4 thread was no longer ideal for using a mid to high end gaming build, it makes that sting so much more for owners of that processor given they were not going to get that same kind of bang for buck longevity in gaming before seeing major performance issues.

      @cssorkinman Год назад

@@putuandhika It depends- A 6600 will start to be the limiting factor at settings above 1080p low with processors such as the 5000 Ryzen series when playing Elden ring. If you are pairing the 6600 with an FX 8 core it will probably move that limit to settings such as 1080p high or 1440p low/medium. But you are going to have to have 16 gb of system memory to support decent frame rates especially with older cpu's/platforms. One thign to keep in mind is that Nvida gpus 10xx series and newer tend not to play very well with FX's compared to the Radeon piers due to the higher cpu overhead requirements of their drivers. This doesn't matter so much at higher graphics settings and resolutions but when trying to eek out playable framerates at lower settings on comparitively weak cpu's it can make a huge difference.

I still run a 6300. The only great downside of it is that end of support for W10 and W11 capricious requirements and threats over also ending security updates even if you can perfectly run it is making me paranoid. If that wasn't an issue, I'd be upgrading my GPU a little instead of worrying about the CPU (it's a 2GB GPU 1060 Mhz clock, does well with many games but something newer would do better, ofc).

At one point untill around 2015 i had the FX8350 and it was a nice CPU, but i've broke some pins, when i wanted to replace the old thermal paste, i ripped the whole cpu out with the cpu cooler, that i removed (it just sticked to it like glued). I've got myself a replacement for cheap, an FX8300, that i paired with 16 GB 1866 mhz DDR3 and it served me well for another year, untill i got myself the new Ryzen 5 1600 somewhere around the end of 2016 (and this was a huge upgrade to the FX cpu). Nice to see, that the FX8350 is still holding up that well. But i wouldn't recommend it nowadays, only, if someone would get a system with that specific cpu for below 100 - 150 $/€ or for free. It's just to outdated to keep up with modern tech and it is now over 10 years old and still costs used more (in some areas), than some better and newer CPUs (i would rather recommend the Intel Xeon route, because they are mostly way cheaper and more powerfull, than the AMD FX lineup and therefore gives a better budget build).
Meanwhile (since almost a year now) i am rocking the i5 13400F and it will last me for a longer time, i decided (even though i am thinking about getting something like an low powered Ryzen 7 5xxx in the near future, just for testing and for my own curiousity).

So I am undecided to buy a used am3+ motherboard because some people say that it's really not worth spending money. I have a limited budget and cannot afford for am4 motherboards nowadays. If I buy an am4 motherboard, I also need to upgrade the other components as well. So far, I haven't had a problem with my am3+ system and I have been using the system mostly for programming, researching and watching some movies. What do you think? Thanks!

The fact that the RX 6600 XT, and 7 nm "Navi 23" silicon it's based on, physically only features a PCI-Express 4.0 x8 bus interface. The GPU only has pins for eight PCIe lanes. This was probably a design choice made to cut costs and save pin-count on the compact GPU package.
So by running PCI-E Gen 3 you are even limiting the gpu harder.
PCI-Express 4.0 x8 is a huge amount of bandwidth. Given that PCIe Gen 4 pushes 16 Gbps per direction, you're looking at 16 GB/s per direction; or at bandwidth that's identical to PCI-Express 3.0 x16. This should be plenty for a mid-range GPU like the RX 6600 XT, end of the story? But wait...there's a catch. When installed on older platforms with PCIe Gen 3, such as Intel 10th Gen "Comet Lake" (or older), or AMD Ryzen 2000 series (or older), the GPU is forced to operate at PCI-Express 3.0 x8, which is half the bandwidth of Gen 4 x8. And if you're on even older platforms, such as AMD FX, however unlikely, it's going to run at PCI-Express 2.0 x8, which is about a quarter of the bandwidth of Gen 4 x8.

That said good video and the chips could be the bottleneck before pcie lane I would have just preferred it if video had avoided this issue by using a different card.

Sheeple say buy new new new new, fanatics say i will keep using my FX until it dies in 10 years. But both are wrong and you shouldnt be either one. The correct balanced thing to do in 2023 to replace fx is get an older gen ryzen like even the 35w R3 4300GE. Not worth it to have to nitrogen cool your cpus soon to have less performance than modern 10w chips.

R5 4500 is a better CPU than either of those based on how it ranks on Passmark and it's an under-$80 part.

They can still play but as your video shows you are quite CPU limited even in games that are known to be mostly GPU-hogs.
If you play a lot than just the high powerdraw should warrant you thinking about switching to a newer platform cause upgrading to an Intel 6th gen or Ryzen 2nd Gen will be cheaper than continuing to use FX in just 2-3 years if you use your PC more than just 1 hour a day.
(Also just call them what they are - 2 module 4 thread, or 4 module 8 thread. The FX 8350 does simply not have 8 cores and that can nicely be shown when looking at its scaling-behaviour even in purely integer-workloads.)

  • @bryanharrison3889

    That 8350 is a 4 core/8 thread processor.

      it's a 4 module (2 cores per module) 8 processor cpu.
saying it's an 4 core cpu is just silly. AMD didn't even have SMT or HT technology
And seeing as how the FX cpus weren't magically being oblitered by the Phenom 2 cpus, it's a bit silly to make these claims
that benig said, the 8 cores were ass

I have an fx8320 and it's absolute trash with a 1050ti. Mount and Blade 1 bottleneck, elden ring is horrible, it's just terrible. If you put a better gpu sure it might seem not as bad but for its price and POWER HUNGRY, I can confidently say NO.
I got a cheap Xeon 2640v3 kit and its so much better! And in my testings it was not as power hungry because it barely needed to use 100%, whereas the 8320 was sweating at 100% all the times. If the frames arent great while roaming, it will drop like hell in a fight. I have one, I'm not joking. It's terrible.
Meanwhile with my "new" Xeon it's my gpu now that is 100% at all times! It never got past 50 with the 8320. Fx processors are so bad AMD had to compensate for false ad because they are not really 8 cores. If you have to buy from scratch, consider a trusty store from AliExpress, I've had mine for 6 months and no sign of problems!!

I want to point out that AMD settled a lawsuit in one state in one country. They weren't found guilty of anything as the case never went that far. Companies settle outside of court all the time to avoid long drawn out court cases.
There are really 8 cores in that cpu. They cores just suck ass.
If the case was that shut and dry, AMD would have been sued in basically every country on the planet. How they gonna get sued only in California, but not the EU? aka a place with much better consumer protection.

If anybody is really thinking of making a budget gaming pc with an FX chip I would suggest just looking into an I7-3770 or 4790 Intel system instead. better performance and cost is around same in most areas of the world

They're way expensive than 8 core FXs here in Argentina. I got mines for a third of what the Intel equivalent costs. They're way too overpriced.

......test these OLD cpus again on windows 10/11 and then test them after hitting windows with the Atlas OS deployment. it worked For an old am1 athlon 5350 atlas os really got it to pick its socks up and move a bit faster. after all the inbuilt windows background hidden thread eating bullshit is Disabled/removed.

plus the spector and meltdown fixes that eat cpu runtimes is only really required for intel cpus as amd cpus had a better immunity as you have to install meltdown or specter manually on amd systems.. unlike intel it could just slip in off the internet due to intels shoddy design.

I am pretty sure it's on the overlay in the benchmarks. Appears it was 32GB of DDR3 and that would have been 1600Mhz.
