    I was in middle school when this happened and it really changed the way school was handled for the rest of my time in school. We started having intruder and lockdown drills at least once a year, if not more often. Though we never took it seriously. It wasn't until my senior year in high school when we got a new French teacher who informed us she was a teacher at Columbine that day and told us about what happened. When we had an intruder drill with her, we all took it seriously because we knew from her how important it was and what it meant to be prepared and safe. I pass that importance onto my own students as I move into the education field, stressing not the fear but the need to be safe and ready.

      Same here. I remember right after this happened, my school chose to have one of the school staff members stand outside the entrance doors to our school with one of those handheld metal detectors. It really freaked me out and I was afraid to go to school for a few days after the event.

    • @bigwin2010
      @bigwin2010 7 лет назад +3

      Same. I was in sixth grade at the time, and was at home sick watching the tv when the Columbine shooting came on. It was chilling to watch live. My earliest memory of watching something so terrifying live as it happened, except for maybe the OJ chase. Totally changed everything for my school too. Everything became Zero Tolerance. Suspensions for bringing nail clippers to school, etc. Destroyed the fabric of our society in a way.

    Adam, you need to get some business cards with your RUclips and websites on them for when police or other interested parties stop you to ask who you are and what you're doing.

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 7 лет назад +21

      True enough... but you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. If the cops are going to confront me anyway, does it make more sense to be loud and confrontational about it, or quiet and polite about it? A pack of business cards (and quick links to his channel on his phone) is a very good idea.

      unauthorized people are not allowed on school property when school is in session. If you are an unknown person on campus they will investigate. The memorial was off school grounds a little. Before going to a school you are supposed to announce yourself at office to get permission.

      The police are there to protect our children, there are times when you can get your panties in a twist, this is not one of them. What right are you trying to protect? They showed him where the public area was, they had no ill will.

      "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar"
      This. I fail to see how Adam being uncooperative would have helped anything.
      Under other circumstances, I'd agree with LadyDragonsblood, but Columbine High School doesn't seem like the smartest choice of location for trying to prove a point about filming rights.

    I live around 2 miles from Columbine High School. I actually drive by it most days and I went to school at the next closest high school at the time Sheridan High School. That day is still something I think about often. As I'm about to move to the Anaheim area at the end of this month I'll be visiting this memorial one last time as I feel compelled to still never forget that anything can happen anywhere and to cherish every moment we have.
    Thanks for visiting my area of the world and making this video.

    I remember Columbine well. As a victim of bullying throughout junior high and high school, I was able to take my experiences and channel them positively. I got my revenge by living an enjoyable life, free of mundane activities and responsibilities and full of constant fun and enjoyment. I have so much fun every day that I'm constantly laughing. None of the people I grew up with were so lucky.
    Unfortunately, when you're in the thick of being tortured every day by your peers, a few individuals will resort to violence. I personally swore off violence at age 14 and I haven't raised a hand or a weapon to man, woman, or child since then. No one deserves to be killed for bullying people, but there are probably tens of thousands of people alive today that deserve to have served time in prison for what they did as youngsters. Until justice is served for these people, school shootings will continue to occur.

    Adam, thank you so much for this video. The Columbine shooting happened 4 days after my 19th birthday. Having just got out of highschool this event affected me deeply. Not only did it break my heart, but I also could have been classified in the same group as the shooters. Always in Black, a self mutilating cutter. A NIN superfan.. etc.
    I think the way you approached it was sweet and authentic. Thank you for showing the memorial and speaking about the victims. People always focus on the carnage and death. You made me cry man!
    Anyways, I just perchanced on your blog a week or so ago with your visit to the Texas Chainsaw filming locations. I love what you do, and enjoy that a fan of so much pop culture can see these places we may never get to see in person. Mad respect.

However, it's possible that Adam was indeed quite affected by where he actually was, and what he'd just seen, that he needed to immerse himself in something seemingly innocent, which is REALLY understandable to be honest.

    I know the feeling of finally going there. I did that in 2004. I’m an ‘81. A couple weeks ago on the 25th anniversary I got an opportunity to go inside the school. Man… the chills. It’s like hollowed ground. They were having a memorial concert in the auditorium. I couldn’t believe I was actually there. I kept staring at the metal railing that goes upstairs. It’s still the same. There were a lot of young people there who were performing that night in the Columbine choir and band. I’m glad they weren’t born then and can walk around without the feelings I get. There’s always been prairie dogs at Clement park. In other areas around Denver that aren’t condo projects etc, prairie dogs are common. I had not been to the actual school since maybe 2011. It never feels very welcoming since it seems like anyone could he watching you through the windows. Even on the weekend. I wouldn’t dare go there on a school day. They might be nice like they were to you but they honestly don’t like random people wandering around.

    I was in high school myself. I remember seeing the coverage of the shooting when I got home from school. I was impacted in a non direct way, knowing some one who knew Rachel Scott, being the person who broke the news that she was among those killed. Forever changed me. I heard Craig’s story of survival in the months after. Never have forgotten this day.

    Adam, the permanent crosses are in a cemetary a few miles east of CHS. Corey and Rachel's graves are right next to them. Those kids would be about 35 now, some with kids of their own. And many of their friends who were wounded still carry the scars. What a waste.

    Adam, thank you for doing this well done tribute. I really appreciate how you read each of their memorials. My grandson is a sophomore in high school where they do lock down drills. The shootings at Georgia Tech happened in April 2007 only 9 years ago. Georgia Tech is located about an hour from us and had a big impact on our area. Hard to believe that 33 were killed that day. Columbine reminds me so much of what happened at Virginia Tech.

    In 1980 I was a Marine cadet and we had a drill team; for a school project, I did a demo to the class with an inert but very realistic rifle, which I brought to school in a gun case and left it at the principal's office before and after the demo. It was a different world then. "School shootings" wasn't even in our vocabulary. R.I.P. to the victims here, they deserved a better fate.

    Adam I'm sure people who were there so much appreciated your video.
    The government should have torn that school down.
    They still should. Those children that attend there see the whole thing in there minds everyday. I'm sure they know the exact places where each person was found. Even adults are bothered by those things. I'm sure they have a hard time finding teachers. But the babies are forced to go. I'm sure it has caused mental problems that they will carry all their lives, even the children that attend there today.
    The building needs to be removed.

      The worlds excuse for saving money is...
      The children will get over it because they need to know the world has its problems.
      No they don't. There are different levels of problems and some things are just too much for all ages but mostly children need to be protected till they are old enough to know.

One lost a nephew, and one defended the two shooters as they were friends of her kids. Was sad to watch that go down in the wake of it all. Sadly we had a second shooting not to far down the road from us in bailey. It really makes you worry about your kids when they go to school. No where is safe anymore. I'm a man from Italy and I'm a fervent, passionate man about the American culture. In 1999 I was a 15-years-old guy and I remember the moment I saw the terrible news from the Italian media. I was in the same age of many of the columbiners and the poor victims of this tragedy. That day I broke down in tears watching the terrible images from the media. 25 years from the massacre flew away and I'm upset the same way. Thank you for this video, watching to that it's like I was there. I'm still not having the possibility to travel in the US and take a visit to the Memorial but I'm there with my sould and my heart. My heart is full of tears for the victims that lost their lives and their families. I ask sorry if my English is not very good, I hope I was able to express my thoughts correctly.

    I was only 9 when Columbine happened but I remember the fallout vividly. I went to a small, private christian school and I can remember having a candlelight vigil for the columbine students, and a book i used to read all the time was "Rachels Tears", it was written by the parents of Rachel Scott using some of her journal entries. At 9 years old I realized the true pain and loss that these people went through, seems every generation loses their innocence earlier and earlier. Great video Adam, a nice way to pay your respects.

    Ok Adam, you made me cry. Excellent tribute! Denver is my favorite place in the whole world and I'm planning on moving back. I moved there the first time in July of 1999. This tragedy was still fresh in our minds. On a lighter note my daughter had a "pet" prairie dog when she was 18. I ended up caring for it, for a while. That chirping you heard him doing was he "alerting" his friends there could be danger. They are very social creatures. He would chirp and alert me in the middle of the night if he heard something. They can be mean little devils and they are not tame... He finally got a home with other prairie dogs. It was a good move for him, since they are so social.

    That hit me right in the "feels" Adam (The teacher's quote at the end made me even shed a tear or two). I remember the day after more I was still in High school at the time but even though my school was in Florida everyone who was in school the day after that event was still in shock that it could and did happen. Most got paranoid of other students who were wearing trench coats to school (because this was in April much of the cooler weather was gone replaced by being hot, it didn't make sense to most why they were wearing them. So, they jumped to the conclusion that they might be in the trench coat mafia.) Others (like me) started to wonder what they could do if it did happen and topics like that (It was kinda scary to think about, since I used to hang out nearly every lunch period in the Library on our own campus). But all were for the most part sadden by the tragic event. As I got older and a few more of these popped up I did more research into these types of events to try and get closure on it I guess. It kinda of helped but mostly made for more questions like "What can we do to keep this from happening again and again?" Most people don't have answers to these types of questions, I don't really think we will have just one easy "fix" to this problem but many.

It was my senior year, so I didn't experience the full effects in the years since, but the mood around school was different. I'm sure behind the scenes they had to make changes to our graduation since our class size was over 800.
