What I loved most about Theodora's transformation is that, instead of being traumatized and heartbroken by it, she not only immediately embraces it, but plans to weaponize it against Oscar.
Maybe she "kills" the Tin Man's heart before... In the book it's the Wicked Witch of the East (=Evanora) who made him become heartless. What do you think about it ? :D (sorry for my bad English, I'm French)
No this is her first time using it because look at the reaction on her face she was shocked and scared of her sisters new look. She did not know the poison apple would do that because she clearly did not read the directions.
I remember watching this and it being my first favorite film as a child. Theodora was always my favorite character and this broke my heart 😭 she did not deserve this she was lovely.
The best part of the film for me is when evanora smiles after theadora realizes her wickedness, because I'd never seen Rachael Weisz as a villain before, and she played it pretty well.
Most actors, even those known for "good guy" roles, actually enjoy playing the villain a lot more because it lets you chew the scenery a bit. Of course, Theodora gets to do this much more than Evanora does in the end of this one.
Heartbreak is what can drive any person to the path of darkness. Bitter jealousy or just the sight of seeing someone you love being taken away can hurt more than any injury or illness great or small.
Poor Theodora, Oz, took away all her first experiences and threw them away like the cad he is. Her first time meeting a man, who she was told would be her husband. She was giving her first gift from a man. Her first dance, her first kiss, her first clandestine night. What she believed was her destiny, Oz robbed. Oz took away her innocence. Then she was betrayed by the one person who should have been her most trustworthy, her own sister. The two combined drove her insane with bitterness, hate and rage, she became a scorned woman. Theodora's heartbreak, and her sister's promise to make it all go away with magic made it easy to take a bite out of an apple. Once taken, that moment of a broken heart, broken promises, pain, betrayal and rage were locked in her heart forever. She became ugly, green with envy, and a fatal jealousy seeing Oz with Glenda. Theodora condemned herself to damnation forever and her evil heart and mind would never be humanely good ever again.
When her sister said "Oh dear". It was as if she were saying "What have I done?". And that right there... told us that Theodora was FAR worse then her sister now! Just like the original movie said! It's little touches like that which makes a great prequel!
Does anyone catch the biblical reference in this scene? Theadora is offered a fruit under false pretenses thinking it will give her one thing and yet she ends up with an entirely different outcome. Furthermore, jealousy and covetousness (wanting to keep the throne from Glenda and Oz. Wanting to be the one Oz loves etc) is ultimately what causes her to snatch the apple out of her sister’s hand. Her sister, the deceiver, tells her that one bite will solve all of her problems. As soon as Theodora takes a bite of the apple her eyes are suddenly opened and she gains a knowledge and realization of who and what is truly good and who and what is truly evil. In her case she realizes that her sister is the “evil one” and that her sister has been deceiving her this entire time. Her realization and knowledge comes at a cost though. She can never again return to the pure naive state She was in prior to eating that cursed fruit. She can’t take the eating of the apple back. To top it all off, eating the fruit causes her to become completely debased, and she gives over completely to a fallen and evil nature. Poor Theadora, everyone she ever loved betrayed her. Her fate/destiny was unfair. Oz was a con and a womanizer. As far as I’m concerned he was never “good” or “great” but an opportunist, liar, and cheat.
Oz was a womanizer? You're high. He wasn't in love with her like she was with him. But he wasn't cruel or even mean rejecting her advances. A woman is praised for far less rejecting men. So calm down with that womanizer garbage talk. 🤔🤦♂️
the fun thing here is that Theodora becomes the stronger of the 2 evil witches. Her personal grudge against OZ is something else. Fell for the flashy con man who was pretending, and now she's out for blood.
Agreed, Mila was really good and I felt awful for her character. Even though sometimes people are born monsters many are created by the things that people carelessly do to them... and this wizard was an asshole!
I feel sorry for Theodora. She was so naive of the world she didn't know that Glinda was really the Good Witch and was tricked by her sister (involving the evil transformation shown in the video). Her sister really wanted Glinda to be killed. Also, the thing about destroying the wand can kill the evil witch thing was true. Evanora being evil, was vanquished (spoilers) though, because Glinda broke her black necklace and turned her ugly...
Jacqualius Allen no she got in because evanora helped her break the spell Exactly only pure hearted souls could enter Her soul was pure but that enchantment she ate made her mostly evil and ruthless the bubble knew she was dangerous so she couldn't enter it even if deep down she had goodnes I have proof that she broke the bibble. Because when oscar entered he couldn't at first but did And oscar could enter cuz he wasent dangerous and evil Theadora used a spell to break the. Bubble and evanora helped her It's prety obvious
If we consider that this film is within the same cannon as The Wizard of Oz, then it makes the death of the Wicked Witch, all the more painful. It's the Wizard that orders Dorothy to kill the witch. Imagine what must have happened between the two films for it to come to that. Glinda watching her mighty Wizard age while she does not. Knowing her sister murdered their father, and twisted her other sister into a monster. How lonely a life she may have had to endure. In the end Glinda's sisters are dead, as far as we know Glinda and the Wizard never had kids. We can only assume the battle against the two wicked sisters never slowed or stopped. When you sit and watch the two films, perhaps I am getting old, but there is so much pain hidden beneath these two stories I'm glad most kids won't notice it, if ever.
When you think about it, it's true. Perhaps in between Glinda had a baby but had a miscarriage. Because Evanora cursed her in never having children and to never age with her Wizard. Then somewhere in Oz a rumor started about the legend of Ozma, a witch that will someday come in the darkest hour of Oz.
I look at it this way - the Broom is Profound Link in Both Movies.....in the Original. "Bring the Broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West".....knowing that they'd have to Kill her, or be killed Trying to get it.....and in OTGAP, she says "It was a Broom you wanted, wasn't it Wizard"?
The word is "canon." And this would have a job being connected to the MGM movie, given that Oz and everything in it were just a dream Dorothy had. As for anything to do with L., Frank Baum's Oz, the witches were not sisters and Oz never had anything going on with Glinda.
Michael Chabot Ozma is not a witch, she is a human/fairy hybrid. Her mother is Queen Lurline of the fairies and her Father is King Pastoria of Oz, making her not only a fairy princess but the rightful heir to the throne of Oz.
Here's another side to Theodora's character development that no one comments on here: that she was actually "bad" all along. Let me explain, because there are hints of this in the movie, but they can be hard to spot. Let's start with the first scene. When Oz arrived, Theodora never truly fell in love with him, but fell in love with being his queen. The movie hints as such very early on, first when her whole demeanor changes when he "magically" shows her flowers to when she bows and says they would both spend a lifetime together and that she would be his queen. Note that she said this without Oz acknowledging this would be true, or even having Oz consent to such an arrangement. She fell in love not with Oz, but with the fantasy of having great power and being queen. When this fantasy started to collapse, she could not take this loss (not of losing Oz romantically, but of losing power). This is confirmed as to *when* she bites the apple. She bites the apple when Evanora says "unless you would rather see Oz and Glinda there", indicating that the loss of power was too much to bear. Also note that Theodora asks Evanora "do you think [Glinda] will be his queen?", also indicating that Theodora only cared about power, and not of Oz on any kind of romantic level. If she cared for him, she would have said "do you think they like each other? Do you think they will be boyfriend/girlfriend? Do you think they will get married?", etc. So, in a way, her becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, while still unfortunate and tragic, is not as tragic as we might believe.
Mila Kunis does a great job as Theodora in this movie. She’s great when she’s playing this character when she was a good 🧙♀️ and especially when she became a wicked witch 🧙♀️ . She deserves a lot of praise for her performance.
I sort of agree with people when they say that she probably wasn't the best fit for the role, but that's because the kind of character Theodora is just doesn't fit with a lot of the characters she's played in the past. But I think she was marvelous in the role, the only weak spot I care to point out was the rage she felt later on in the movie. I feel like Mila Kunis us just not great at channeling rage
This movie and Wicked shows that there are two sides to every story. The witch wasn't always the monster she became. The idea that she once loved the Wizard and he broke her heart (and indirectly led her to becoming what she is now) is so sad. And knowing that he later orders Dorothy to kill her, do his dirty work, makes it even worse. This was done to her. If she had known what the apple would truly do to her, I doubt she would have eaten it. She's a victim of the wizard and her sister in the end.
Unfortunately, while she was the victim, she also had choices to make afterward, and systematically chose the wrong ones. Victims start out innocent, but if they don't consciously choose to end the cycle of suffering with themselves, that doesn't justify what they do later.
This is the perfect representation of an emotional trauma birth. How a very traumatic experience (a broken heart) generates an emotional aberration, an emotional trauma (Theodora's new self).
This is truly so heartbreaking to think of how different Theodora was before. Men just don't realize what they can turn us into lol. It's sad knowing that she will never find the goodness inside ever again. All it took was having her heart broken by one man.
What's even more heartbreaking is how terrible this movie is, and how much better it could have been with the right people. I'm especially heartbroken at the shattering not of Mila Kunis' heart, but her career. That is, I would be heartbroken if Kunis could display any emotion aside from uninterested apathy and over-the-top hammy rage, not to mention the lazy nonsensical washed-up rag of a script
The King of the Penguins - Geeeze what makes you an expert..I loved it.....could it have been better, sure...but for what it is/was - I loved it......I look forward to the Sequel since they left you Hangin.....
rextrek There won't be a sequel. And if you truly love it, then that's perfectly fine. You are entitled to your own opinion. It is simply my opinion that this movie was too poorly done to sit through any more than once. Again, just my opinion
OMG no not even close. I like Elphaba more than the Wicked Meg of the West, but the original Wicked Witch and all faithful adaptions based on her were the best because they were evil for evil's sake. Wicked and Oz didn't do the character Justice. Disney also ruined Maleficent the same way by making her bitterly scorned by a man too. There are plenty of unsympathetic people in this world, who show signs of extreme narcissism, sadism, and psychopathy from early childhood. These same people have something that simply cannot be reared out no matter how good the upbringing and environment. So why it is so hard for modern pop culture to accept that some people are just born bad and are not simply the products of their environment is beyond me. Literally there entire movies and tv shows have characters who famously refute this by saying "I don't accept that", and I'm like then go jump off a bridge because reality/life (especially in fairy tales) is a b*tch. One can add personality, sass, style to a character but these studios/directors need trying to give them a tragic gut-wrenching story.
lucariomew365 OMG!!! Wicked Meg of the West! That's awesome, the whole time I watched this movie, I kept hearing Peter's voice in my head saying "Shut up Meg"
cobaltwill215 That was the number one universal complaint people had about her, all they see/here is Meg from Family Guy lashing out. Even in Jupiter Ascending. I like Mila I really do, but she has too much of a distinct voice that can never be separated from that character, I don't even think of Jackie from "That 70s Show" anymore.
Here’s the thing. Evanora talks about the Apple before and after as if she bit into it also. This could be alluding to how in fact there were four wicked witches who sought to divide and conquer Oz. Glinda defeated a wicked witch of the south while her sister Locasta defeated Mombi. So perhaps Mombi or someone gave Evanora the same Apple to help in their conquest of Oz.
Watch return to oz if you want depressing, no tornadoes or flying monkeys there just Dorothy undergoing electro-shock therapy for delusions and a bitch that swaps severed heads like hats.
***** Okay, Dorothy *never* actually *received* electro-shock therapy. The power went out *before* anything bad happened, and then she escaped the asylum with the help of a mysterious girl. Did you see the movie, or are you just repeating what you've heard from people who haven't seen the movie and are repeating what the idiot critics said about it? Watch the movie (again?) and read the books. It's actually much more faithful to the source material than the Judy Garland film.
***** No the film is depressing even though the power went out she did not get the treatment you still see her in a mental asylum being wired up to a machine that is to bleak plus that was never in Baum's books he never went that dark and that lady she has 30 heads. That film is distasteful and in the books she was not sent to a asylum Murch made that up and he made but much darker and bleaker than the books. He removed any humor and tried to makes has scary and bleak was possible while its good film its simply to dark and distasteful this coming from someone who watched the movie recently. More faithful to the books it is but its much darker and bleaker than Baum's writings. This all coming from a die hard Oz fan. Besides I think its better to honor the 1939 movie then the books the themselves anyways because that is the version most people know and its a classic that why I like Oz the Great and Powerful. Most people do not know the books anymore. But kudos to you for reading them.
Matthew Bennett All I know is, when I watched the movie, I fell in love with Oz all over again. And I don't agree with you that it's better to honor the 1939 movie than the books. Without the books, there never would have been a movie, and most people today probably wouldn't know who Judy Garland was. And you're right that most people don't know the books anymore. That's *why* I think they should be honored. Baum was a master storyteller, and while The Wizard of Oz was undeniably a wonderful film, it was not particularly faithful to the source material.
Matthew Bennett Also, if we're going to talk about dark stuff, do you know the full story of the Tin Woodman's origin? He used to be as human as Dorothy, and wanted to marry a girl who was being kept as a house-slave by a nasty old woman, who then paid the Witch of the East to prevent the marriage from happening. The Witch enchanted the Woodman's axe so that it cut off his legs, his arms, and his head, all of which were replaced with tin. Then the blade pierced his heart, and by the time his torso was replaced, his love for the girl was gone. As if that wasn't bad enough, the exact same thing happened to another man who was in love with her. And in the last Oz book that Baum wrote, the Tin Woodman and the Tin Soldier do eventually find her again, only to find that she is with a man built from their original body parts, and has moved on from both of them. From my point of view, that is at the very least, *just* as dark as a little girl's parents understandably believing she is not right in the head.
Whether it is Theodora from this movie or Elphaba from "Wicked", we feel bad for the both of them for what led them to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West that everyone feared
*Elphaba:* Becomes "Wicked" for speaking out against a corrupt government and injustice against Animals. *Theodora:* Becomes Wicked because a man she's known for less than a week cheats on her. (Though I do have to admit that the actress gives an amazing performance with what she's given. She's very talented. )
The Elphaba version of the character is deliberately made much more complex, and really isn't what many people would consider "wicked" although she is named this. It was written as a deconstruction of many of the stereotypes found in the Oz books. The Theodora version is apparently driven bat-poop insane by her sister's apple and definitely deserves to be called wicked.
you know she kind of reminds me of maleficent, and not just because she's a witch with green skin but because she is a good character who got a bad deal and ended up as nothing but a villain and dies, sad
Oh, so the Wicked Witch of the West isnt really evil, she was TRICKED into becoming evil! This movie ruined a lot of things about the original film and the book. It didnt even have the Good Witch of the North in it, just the bland Witch of the South.
+Ben Moak It didn't ruin a thing about either; they are the same as they have ever been. In the books, Glinda is the Good Witch of the South and Tattypoo is the Good Witch of the North.
1Nanalo Defying gravity I'm flying high Defying gravity And soon I'll match them in renown And nobody in all of Oz No Wizard that there is or was Is ever gonna bring me down!
I hope you're happy Look at her, she's wicked! Get her! Bring me down... No one mourns the wicked, So we've got to bring her.... Ahhhh... Down......!!! (Applause)
Oh god... I wasn't the only one thinking about Wicked after all. I was shocked for a moment, since I thought that Nessarose did this to Elphie... ashf my mind just played me.
I like that this movie and Wicked showed the wicked witch in a more sympathetic light. She wasn't always evil. Here she was heartbroken and manipulated by people around her. Kinda sad that Theodora was never redeemed. Her sister doomed her.
I like to think the apple brought to reality what was already transpiring within her. That she could cast it out just enough to not let it make her over yet until the apple
When I saw this movie in theaters, this scene really killed it for me. This scene isn't scary at all. It's just very awkward. And when you see her put the hat on out of nowhere is just silly. Also, the Wicked Witch of the West becomes evil because of a man. The same thing happened in Maleficent. These movies start them off good but then they go blame a man for their bad behavior. Couldn't they have a better motive than this? I mean, I've had my heart broken before. I know that jealousy can make you do crazy things. But I just feel like the idea of a man being the motive for two of the most iconic villains is beneath Maleficent, the mistress of all evil, and the Wicked Witch of the West.
You know how sixteen or twenty years from now (depending on when Dorothy was born) she became like the wickedest witch of all. I know she hated Dorothy because she had the slippers but I think she also hated her out of jealousy because Dorothy was everything she once was beautiful, sweet, and innocent
Maybe I'm overthinking it, but could it be possible the apple was actually a disguised emerald, and she devouring it was like an abomination of nature and corrupted its magic, as well as hers? It shined like a gem and she only took one bite, almost as if breaking it open. Furthermore, Evanora's stone was an Emerald as well, and when Glinda destroyed it, Evanora lost her power and turned old and haggard as if she had poured her life force and soul into it. I know its a metaphor of the fruit of eden and a nod to the white witch from the Narnia series, but this was how I perceived it, plotwise. The gnome king if I recall took all the emeralds of Oz to his mountain and they corrupted him and granted him great power over all reality in Oz. I need to read more on the Oz series, I've always been curious about the gems and their powers.
Poor Theadora, all she did was love and care, then her sister manipulated that so she could become evil and cruel. Then soon after she is killed, when you think about it, the wizard of oz is actually a very depressing and dark story...

+Matthew Bennett ahha yeah I would of been like give me a bite hahaa
Chris Fontaine Yes Evanora is evil so she should have taken a bite.
I love how Evanora so nonchalantly said "just your heart withering away watching her sister turn wicked.
That thing was sad, and the worst part of the storyline. -.-
László Ádám I know right that's why I hate about this movie
Jules Love Remember, it wasn't true what Evanora said, it was just a ploy to get her to turn, remember, Theodora was naïve
I bet if she realized it wasn't true she would of snapped out of it and turned back to good
It was all Evanora's fault, she did this, kinda of makes her the real villain of this fictional universe.
"Oh Dear" Evanora was like I made my sister more wicked than I am. :D
"She's much worse than the last one."-Glinda

@Lorenzo Di get out!
As a Christian I noticed the reference instantly.
@@creepykidandinfinitedreams2987 Same.
He was a very good man, just a very bad wizard.
Oz was a womanizer? You're high. He wasn't in love with her like she was with him. But he wasn't cruel or even mean rejecting her advances. A woman is praised for far less rejecting men. So calm down with that womanizer garbage talk. 🤔🤦♂️

Evanora: 🙂
Nope.
Yeah i feel sorry to. I mean theodora used to be nicer than glinda and now she is even more wicked then evanora
Ramon Ilog Oh she figured out that Glinda wasn't the problem, but it was too late, since by then she was evil.

Jacqualius Allen no she got in because evanora helped her break the spell
Exactly only pure hearted souls could enter
Her soul was pure but that enchantment she ate made her mostly evil and ruthless the bubble knew she was dangerous so she couldn't enter it even if deep down she had goodnes

And oscar could enter cuz he wasent dangerous and evil
Theadora used a spell to break the. Bubble and evanora helped her
It's prety obvious
Even Evanora was scared by what Theodora became.
Michael Chabot
Ozma is not a witch, she is a human/fairy hybrid.

I think if she was truly good the apple woudnt of made her evil
She was still tricked into becoming truly evil. She had a heart before so it’s still. She did not deserve her fate
Wow, I never thought about it that way. Brilliant comment 🌟
When a Wicked Witch offers you an green apple, DON'T EAT IT!
Sadie Jennings don’t forget a red apple...like Snow White
@@hagamapama Sshhh!!! don't break the woke magic for Him
This is the perfect representation of an emotional trauma birth.

This movie is so good I could watch it once a WEEK. An underrated MASTERPIECE
Yo Theodora, I'm really scared of you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but Elphaba was the best Wicked Witch of ALL TIME!
That's awesome, the whole time I watched this movie, I kept hearing Peter's voice in my head saying "Shut up Meg"
cobaltwill215
That was the number one universal complaint people had about her, all they see/here is Meg from Family Guy lashing out. Even in Jupiter Ascending.

This film was so depressing, it kinda made the original Wizard of Oz seem depressing.
Oh wow... that evil cackle still gives me the chills! *love*
oh yeah definitely haha
Kunis's cackle sounds as if she could have a role as Rita Repulsa in the Power Rangers 2016 reboot.

(Though I do have to admit that the actress gives an amazing performance with what she's given. She's very talented. )
He didn't cheat. They were never officially together and he never made out or did Glinda.
Can we appreciate the fact that even in her wicked form, Theodora's hat is still enormous

Thank you.
lucariomew365 For what? XD
The comment. Too many people want a tragic background story at the cost of changing a character and causing them to lose what made them great.
Evanora was the sith lord
Note - it's not ENTIRELY the man. It's the apple that pushes her over the edge and makes her green and cray-cray!
Me-WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?
Supernatural-Oh, it's just your heart withering away!
So she basically turned into Meg
Holy cow I hear it!
You know how sixteen or twenty years from now (depending on when Dorothy was born) she became like the wickedest witch of all. I know she hated Dorothy because she had the slippers but I think she also hated her out of jealousy because Dorothy was everything she once was beautiful, sweet, and innocent
Theodora:"No this is who I am Now, I want to know that he was the one who made me this way! " ( cackles) Evanora:"Oh dear. "
3:16 I love that laugh
