I recently moved from Australia to Germany to do my PhD here, and this is one of my favourites.. It pulls at my heartstrings and prods my tearducts every time.
Hold on Mate... I'm his biggest Yank Fan! Lived in Thirroul, NSW, Oz., for 11 years. Now living in Texas, USA. We have had drought for so long now, with a few respite months of rain but not enough long term, that I often sing this song and "Longreach is Prayin' for Rain"!
Takes me way out west past Mungindi, staying at an old homestead I can see a mother cursing dust and feeling so alone, a fathers despair with no sons to help run the farm and drought turning his dreams to dust but they keep battling on !
I first head of John when I first visited OZ in 1984, feell in love with him then. Introduced him to family and friends. A big Thak you to Maree, Margaret and Alby!
As JW's biggest Yank fan, I love this song and its universal meaning...we'll (my folk trio) be adding it to our repertoire. Maybe we'll post our version soon!
I am thrilled to let all JW--and Pixie Jenkins--fans know is that Pix has agreed to come play with my folk band, Nearly There!, this coming June 24th, 2017! I am so excited i cannot tell ya! If you or your friends want to attend a small, intimate and fun folk festival, drop me a line..and come see and hear the master showman that is Pixie Jenkins!
Well, shitfire, mate! Who am I to argue with a Texan?...;) Lucky bloke, to have gotten to live in Oz. do you also have a band? You can check our version of "40 Years Ago," on our facebook page. Look for "Nearly There" and you can find the link to our Cdbaby sampler.

John Williamson's music is real "Australian" country music, the rest just mimic Nashville.
Fantastic country Australian singer.

I love this guy
What does he mean about the bitumen roads?
Bitumen roads quite often bi-pass the towns, so traffic doesn’t stop…and businesses suffer.
