When you think you understood something, minor scale, minor chords, play slowly. You click a guy video, somehow you always manage to learn something new. "Suspended chords that want to resolve", aha moment let's try it in the DAW you haven't had opened in two weeks. I got a list of chords and scales and what emotions they convey. But lack the context of when to use them, there's a lot of hidden music knowledge that only exist in the minds of veteran musicians. Nobody writes this down in books and if they do it's a small paragraph in a 300 page book. That's why these videos are great.
When I was young, I had lots of piano lessons. I always wanted to learn how to improvise and to really understand how music is working, but the teachers only taught me to play the notes, to write down scales and chords, without any explanation how it all is linked together, and what you can do with it. A few months ago, I have found this great channel, where Guy is explaining in a great, comprehensive, funny and fully inspiring way how to put all these pieces together and to be creative with music. Now, after 40 years, learning piano playing in a new way and creating music is so much fun! I'm also listening to music in a different and more distinct way now. Thank you so much Guy for your great videos!
Used this Twinkle Twinkle example from one of Guy’s courses in a RUclips video, making it sad .. or at least wistful. Worked a treat with just piano and strings and adding a little rhythmic variation.. and had immense fun doing it. Somehow he makes it easier to ease one out of a rut. Great man 💫
I've heard about the use of suspended chords to slide down just a touch, somewhat mimicking a crying sound (or emotion). Letting a song breathe and float with a slower tempo also seems to do the trick really well.
I was listening to a playlist on CBC, and heard this composition based on the same twinkle, twinkle, little star theme, and it goes through a number of moods, including sad and dramatic. Dohnanyi- Erno Variations On a Nursery Song
Get the How to Write Music course .. I’ve been writing for 50 years, never enjoyed learning so much in my life. I ❤️ Guy .. and find I write everything better if I’m studying one of his courses at the same time. 😎
Guy, please note to Mozart variations. 12 Variations on 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman', K.265/300e on those 12 variations he really gives lots of different moods. Please never stop, I am always looking for your videos and teaching. Love your work. A truly inspiration. Thank you
I've loved watching Guy's videos since his DP4 days & I've learned more from them over the past few years than any other YT channel. Then I found out in Aug/Sept last year that my dear friend David Goodall was working with Thinkspace, marking / mentoring. Sadly David died in September. In many ways, he reminded me of Clive. Two great musicians who had a positive impact on me and my music. Cheers to you both. (Pete). Keep up the great work sir
Terrific job defining the word sad. Love it. Here's what sad means whether or not you like it. Now define poignant please. Really skillful instruction. I've seen a few of your vids, and I've enjoyed this best. ❤
Here you go friends: 0:00 - Introduction 0:22 - Introduction of the mighty Metro Gnome 0:53 - Step #1: Using the Minor Key 2:21 - Different approach to harmonization (using contrast by making use of chord 3) 4:22 - Step #2: Making use of Suspension (a sense of yearning) 6:26 - Step #3: Long, lyrical emotional lines (play slow and make sure the instruments can play long notes for dynamic movement) 8:22 - Difference between lyrical beauty and sad (all about context) 9:26- Step #4: Rhythm and simplicity (e.g slow with very simple accompaniment, or even using rubato to make it seem like music is floating) 11:32 - Bringing everything together
Great video. The only thing you need to write sad music, is a porcellan gnome! All points Guy mentioned are valid. I just realized how powerfuk rubato is to drive the mood. I'm just not sure how to apply it technically in the DAW. Should I make stepwise tempo jumps or drawing S curves? Or should I add a few beats to a bar, e.g. making one 6/4 bar instead auf a 4/4? Another thing is sound / instrument selection. Guy applied it by using strings. To me there are a couple of obvious choices to convey sadness. For examples the already mentioned con sordino strings, a soft piano or an oboe.
I just this morning happened on Jake Lizzio's (Signals Music Studio) RUclips video on the Phrygian mode. At about 7:30 he plays Happy Birthday in Phrygian. Perhaps its more "dark" than "sad", but it's certainly not "happy".
Hey, i absolutly love your work, and you kind of convinced me to seriously give a go in music composition. I have quite a decent base of knowledge in music, i am a music teacher after all, however, i have never compose on computer. My main proble is i have no idea WHERE to start, what DAW to use for example ? All the inforamtion i got on the web is soooo overwhelming. I advice would you give to a beginner such as myslef ? Again, thanks for that amazing chanel of yours !
People think Minor is the Saddest. But... I noticed it's More Sadder to use a Major key like F. ...but introduce a B Minor. Now you got Sadness. (Yesterday by The Beatles uses this)
This is probably sort of related but slightly more focused. I am very interested in post romantic music like, for example Bruckner, seven symphony. I know this is a huge topic post, Romantic harmony, but I was wondering if you could see what you can distil into a 15 or 20 minute video. I really enjoy your presentation style, and your perceptiveness. I think I will have to get my own garden gnome, and paint him with musical symbols, just as an inspiration, and a reminder of your great videos
Can you make a video about how to build chords to a melody that aren't in the key of that melody/things you shouldn't do when using for example augmented chords (cause they don't naturallly occur in the normal major minor scales)
Dear Mr. Michelmore, I've just subscribed to your channel, and to say that I'm impressed is to say nothing at all! I have a question if you perhaps don't mind it: are the examples that you've played in this video-and, I shall surmise, the other ones-available as sheet notation (or, second best, MIDI files; I could make the former from the latter indeed), in the free or the paid course, or anywhere at all? Sheet music is much easier to analyse to me. Thank you!
I've never laughed so hard when I saw your metro gnome 🤣 Thank you so much for your inspiring videos and extremely valuable information 🙏 has helped my scoring abilities improve so much! Thank you
Would it make sense (disregarding the monetary issue) for a producers/directors to hire a different composer for some of the markets they're targeting for release, based on their different perception of music and how it affects that particular audience? You mentioned how a minor key doesn't necessarily mean sad in some cultures, and that question came to mind.
I hope a next episode, very awaited: How to make happy, funny or joyfull music like Offenbach (who was a real genius because doing this kind of music seems realy difficult in my opinion).
Well done, Guy. You can join me, and together we can corner the market for crematorium music :) I bet we will do well. The thing that made me really sad with the video though, was the absence of your S88. That alone brings tears in the eyes of a cast iron gnome. Looking forward to your next video. Have a happy Valentines with your wife.
I have a how to question. How do you create a feeling of forward movement in a piece where you have to use an instrument with a fixed pedal tone, like a tagelharpa with its drone string? I am having a hard time trying to drive the action of a film scene having to stay around the same tonal centre, sinnce there are only so many chords that fit the key of the drone string..
All you have to do is remember that one time you lost 6tb of your backed up sample and music library because of two mirrored drives failing at the same time. The sad vibes flow like a tap after that.
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Even knowing you have another external backup, although a little less organised, you still get that absolute sinking feeling. I suppose an excuse to organise things more intuitively this time.
I would like to know how to practice playing the piano, if I want to be a composer and not necessarily a concert pianist. I get that is probably isn't detrimental to learn everything, but what elements should I focus on learning first to be able to compose for an orchestra in a DAW like you, sensei?
Hello Guy, I have a question which i hope you can answer(if not it's totally ok), does in the course "Harmony Two" we get to know more about those sad techniques? I already have the course "Composer Blueprints Training" and im hungry for more like that course. Thank you and have a nice day! Ps: I have also the courses "How to write music" and "Learn music theory"
Dunno what all the fuss is about - everyone calls my efforts "sad" 😄
You and me both, my friend.
Come on! I be theyre great
This is a good one. Thank you
Good one😂
Haha underrated comment

That's really great to hear. - thank you
You sir are simply amazing…loved it. Lots of love and respect from here in

The final little piece was absolutely beautiful.....
Sad music is a three step process: 1) Rubato 3) Profit
Seriously, once you change the second chord -- the possibilities are endless. Great tips!
The chord shifts and suspensions were thing I hadn't thought of. Well done.
The first channel I’ve ever clicked the bell notification for. So glad I did. Love this Guy!
Thank you

What a wonderful illustration of how to write a piece of music that conveys the emotion of sadness! Cheers, Guy!
12:54 Lovely harmony. ❤
Please make this a series! A video on how to write *happy* music is exactly what I need right now.
Every one of us needs that, obviously. Being sad and lyric is the basis. Writing like Jacques Offenbach is far difficult.

Yes. When Guy played the tune exactly what I thought of was that French song.
Wow. Thanks so much. Helped a ton!
really like 3.03 well explained, simple and rubato, long lyrical ideas, suspensions.🙌
I’m glad i just discovered this channel! Love the metro gnome. And you have an uplifting energy in your video, awesome!
As ever, Guy, superb. You are an excellent communicator and teacher.
"I managed to squeeze a tear from a porcelain gnome" is now my go-to phrase for any success.
Ha! youre welcome!

He's giving away tricks that The Cure have used for decades
Super Super Inspirational! can't get enough..
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thank you!
Superb video, many thanks for this, and I learnt some new musical concepts.
As always great video and info. I happen to be working on music for different emotions and used twinkle as a starting point. Thanks!!!
"Twinkle twinkle, little star" was turned into a sad, or rather a scary song in one of the trailers for Dead Space, whilst not being in a minor key.
Thanks Guy. A nice "howto" video would be changing keys in a piece (at least it would be for me :) ).
Modulation blog yup good idea
Great video!
I’ve never cried so much on hearing a nursery rhyme in my life 😢😂😊
Вы очень крутой❤ это восхитительно)) спасибо за то что делитесь знаниями и информацией. Это очень помогает разобраться🔥👍
Example @ 2.00 " alternating maj/min Twinkle " has turned into 1st half of the verse from" What a wonderful World " . LOve the later suspensions.
Fantastic Guy. Please cover other emotions as well 😀

you're a genius
A friend of mine when writing sad piano compositions swears by the use of minor chords, closed lid, and slightly detuning the piano.
"Hello everyone!!!! 😁😁😁😁 Today, we're going to be writing sad music :))" (Amazing video as usual Guy!)
Beautiful work but you can't beat Mike Batt - Bright Eyes (Watership Down) for emotional sadness (imho)

According to Nigel Tufnel, D minor is the saddest key.
Yay BBCSO :) 7:15
Use DMinor- after all it’s the saddest key
Great video as always Guy. Is that one of Mark Knofler's recently auctioned (£8m total sales) guitars in the background? :)
Yes thats Mark's - stuck it on the credit card of course.....

both at the same time?!
Can you please make a video on how to make horror music
yup thats a good one
Special effects top notch
How do you even put such non-metrical pieces into that rigid grid of a DAW, or a musical staff, for that matter?
I have a hard time staying in key, what can I do? Do I need to memorize the chart of A-G?
I bought the music for video games course Guy, but I can't find the discord Chanel?
send in a support ticket!
Answer: Be Sad, or ask Lucifer/Satan like Jim Morrison from the Doors or Ozzy Ozborn did (which I don't recommend).
Hi Guy. Chromaticism should be added to the list.
its sad or nothing for me. minor key ftw.
Hmmm, suddenly I see MacOS and an Arturia controller after years of Windows and Native Instruments!
👌I make ambient, new age.Wich are the best scales for that?Modes?
Good question Ill investigate
Important question, Guy: does Metro Gnome actually have a valid ticket for the Metro? (I am very sorry)
Even cheerful music can sound sad when you're not feeling cheerful. A lot has to do with your state of mind.
Funny, sounds like Christmas to me.
Where did the S88 go?
Easy just use Dm - the saddest of all keys
Yeah but HZ writes everything in Dmin and not everything he writes is sad
