You don't suppose there's any operational quarries in indiana that you could get permission to come look for calcite and other gemstones? I've been to one as a kid on a school trip, so they let people in from time to time.
Nature did that! Poured a slurry which settled, then got pressed over time :) Very uniform formations in some places...(Bedford area) Indiana for one, and that famous place in northern France (Caen?) for another! Yes, Mother Nature, you did a very nice pour!

@@mattcouch2965 Thanks for your response a couple of years ago, I'm not sure I saw it! I'm also shocked at the very elemental nature of my own question. I think of myself as having known those things for years, so not sure what I was thinking there. For example, in the movie from 1979, Breaking Away, the father goes back to the mill and puts in wedges on a block being gang-sawed. I also knew about hand carving of statues and fluting columns etc from my machinist experiences. It kind of blows my mind that only three years ago I asked that question. Looks like a perfect limestone slab that they poured.. then cut out limestone from.
