    If you've ever driven on 80/294 just a little west of the Indiana border, you've probably craned your neck to look curiously into the giant hole on both sides of the expressway.
    Stopping on the side of the road is a terrible idea here but there are vantage points along the surrounding streets. Tours are available but nearly impossible to get on.
    Come with me and take a drone flight over one of the largest quarries in the world and learn about its 116 foot dam that holds back an 8 billion gallon reservoir.

      Thanks for the visit and great comment. I made a video a few weeks ago about another big quarry in Chicago ruclips.net/video/oPm7bCJ-dUI/видео.html Route 66 ran through this one and although it wasn't a major interstate, the section had to close because it isn't safe. A lot of Chicago's roads and foundations have come out of these quarries.

    Thanks Mainlightdrone for this video. Really cool and informative. I am a Truck Driver and drive through that stretch of 294/80 and always wondered if the freeway was on columns over the quarry. Well now from your footage I see that the freeway is built on the stone of the quarry. Reservoir on one side and Quarry on the other. So thanks again for the footage. Now I am more aware of how that’s looking from the freeway.

    • @MainlightDrone
      @MainlightDrone  Месяц назад

      Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Jason! There are indeed tunnels under it and Chicago also has tunnels under it but they're different systems. The Deep Tunnel project stores storm water and does a good job of keeping it off of the streets and out of basements. There are 109 miles of tunnels extending from the quarry ranging in width from 9 to 33 feet. These tunnels help the reservoir hold up to 30,000,000 cubic meters of storm water. That's almost 8 billion gallons or over 12,000 Olympic swimming pools.

      I looked up to see if there were any salt mines and I don't think so. I've done videos on three of the biggest quarries in Chicago and they're all limestone. If you go down the railroad track during fall through early spring, you can get pretty close physically and get a good look in. I wandered down that way when I was a kid and could look into the quarry from close up. It was April and so the trees and bushes were not filled in. There was a fence of course,, and caged ladders descending down into the quarry.

    If I were to say. Use the rock quarry to generate clean renewable electricity, by making it a heat pit, heat battery, yes that would mean filling it back up with rocks (the right type) that can be heated up thermally, with fresnel or parabolic lenses, and that stored heat can and will spin electrical engines and generate electricity, cleanly, yes I realize there would also have to be plenty of piping to direct the heat to the turbines that generate the electrical voltage/watts, and Chicago can be more green than before!!!
