A “Well done video”! As a side note - I am always intrigued by the graphic showing our position in the MilkyWay Galaxy from an overhead view which includes the stated fact that it takes our solar system 200 Million years to orbit the galaxy. My initial reaction is to question what the position may have been on the day I was born…. But then I immediately come to my senses realizing that if I were 100 years old that the rotation would only be reversed by 1 two-millionth of the circumference. Not that good in math but I think that would equate to about .00018 of 1 Degree!
Yes, I get what you're saying. But I think they mean "same place RELATIVE TO the galaxy itself". Just like when they say the earth is "back to the same place it was" after the yearly orbit around the sun, it doesn't TECHNICALLY mean that either!
And the solar system is corkscrewing it's way in its orbit around the galactic center. 200 million years. How is that for one tick of the cosmic clock?⌛
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. For some reason I always thought that our view of the Milky Way was looking outwards, and not towards the centre so I've learnt something new :). But I'm not sure about the statement that we visit the 'same place' every 250 million years of a galactic cycle, as surely the Milky Way is moving too?
@Gage Absolutely. I might have to check some star charts now and get my head around it. I know Sagittarius is the galactic centre so that's a reasonable starting point.
I was born on the earth that was on the sagittarius arm on the outskirts. I just watched a show not more than 2 yrs ago about us being on the sag. Arm and thats what i grew up knowing. What the hell is wrong with everyone the 2 main arms were persius and sagittarius. Have you noticed the land masses being different? We are on a parallel earth somehow. This is not my homeworld. Maybe because earth could also refer to the soil and not the planet itself. So saying 'the earth' we are referring to the one of something or all of the soil and stuff that makes up the whole planet?
Well I can understand saying "the earth" when talking about soil e.g. "the earth in my garden is full of stones", but it shouldn't really apply to the name of our planet imo. I *always* call it Earth.
This is a great video. The only issue I have is with the inaccuracy of a galactic year. One galactic year is equivalent to 230 million earth years. That’s how long it takes the solar system to rotate completely around the center of the galaxy.
In the beginning you made a mistake. You said that only with in the last century have we thought that the center of the universe is not the Earth. This is FALSE. The geocentric model was mainly a European concept. Civilizations from other regions had no such fallacies. Scrolls exists from Egypt, India/Pakistan and Iraq/Turkey regions which show the Earth moving around the sun. Their level of astronomy was much higher than ours.
Does the sun and our system revolve around the galaxy with the arm and other stars we have locally, or do we go through other arms by ourselves as we revolve?
If you’d done your research well, you’ll find that only Europeans have known sun to be the centre of our planetary system for centuries where as other cultures have known it for millennias.
Earth, with capital, or for the benefit of millenials, upper case, E, refers to our planet. It is a proper noun. The common noun, with lowercase e, refers to the soil, rocks, matter, ground, under our feet. So, the title should not have the definite article, the, in it. Happy day, my fellow Earthlings 🌞
I have a Theory - The Universe favours "Averages". Our Galaxy -> Just a Mid-sized Galaxy that is Neither too small, Nor too big. Our Location in Galaxy -> Just near the Middle, Neither too close, Nor too far. Our Sun -> An Average sized Star, Neither too small, Nor too big. Our Earth -> The Fourth Planet in a System of 8 Planets. Average of 8 = 8/2 = 4 Humans -> Average sized Animals on the Planet, We are neither too Large, NoR too small.
I’m still trying to figure out why the Big Dipper and Little Dipper are the same shape, shouldn’t repetition being so closely accurate (ignoring scale) be impossible?
Well it has been theorized that the milky way is moving towards a region of space called the "Great Attractor" The name given because the milky way is moving towards it or in that direction. It could be that we are in a group orbit with other galaxies including Andromeda. In a sort of Lagrange scenario. This means that multiple dense gravitational bodies are orbiting each other around a mutual point created by their interaction.
Well yeah but the funny part and maybe difficult to grasp is there is NOTHING there at that spot. The spot is created by all the objects interacting with each other. This same concept happens with the, Earth, Sun and Moon interactions as well. We have placed satellites in these positions that are created by the gravitational effects between them. In fact there are even asteroids that are locked into these positions. Its a really interesting result of how gravity between multiple objects causes these effects. To ramble on more.. These points are created between multiple galaxies which are locked into each other. Imagine now that these strong gravitational spots pull in gas and dust but there is NOTHING there. This could in effect cause a new galaxy to form in these locations.
@@krumplethemal8831 What is really cool is they are learning how to use these gravitational "eddys" to assist in getting spacecraft to their destination. Like using ocean currents to assist in moving a boat. Very cool indeed! And I like your idea of the possibility of new galactic formations!
