  • Joanna Ward’s “Translucent” (2020), performed by Collin Oldham (cello) and Stephanie Lavon Trotter at the Extradition 2024 Summer Concert, July 20, 2024, at Performance Works Northwest, Portland, OR, USA.
Written for cellist/vocalist Jennifer Langridge, the score for “Translucent” is “a kind of micro-level exploration of the paths and intersections between different strands of my interests as a composer,” says Ward. “Open/graphic scoring, using color, displacing expectations and interacting with the uncanny, centering the subjectivity of the performer, thinking with cyclical structures - all of these are significant aesthetics and experimental practices for me.” The structure of the piece is very simple, built from four systems (each with a duration of 1’10”) that include both defined passages and sections in which the performers are to improvise, sometimes “like a memory of what came before.”
Based in Portland, Oregon, Extradition is an ensemble and concert series that works at the intersection of composition and improvisation, deliberation and chance, clarity and silence.
