From a Tranmere Rovers fan this brings tears to my eyes!! He carried on this form for us scoring 40 goals in his first season…..I had never seen these highlights before today, what a player Liverpool let go, what a player you had and what a player we signed!! Because of his Real Sociedad connection I’ve always looked out for your results my favourite Spanish side!
Considering the past records of players from the UK playing in big European leagues, Aldridge's time at Real Sociedad feels very under-rated. The likes of Rush, Hughes, Owen, Law, Greaves, Gascoigne and many others have struggled in one way or another (culture, style of football, language, difficulties adapting, whatever) or they've just been generally underwhelming, but Aldo seemed to take to it with ease. He kept playing the same aggressive way he always had and banged in two very decent seasons. In fact, he's just very under-rated, full stop.
I remember John giving the Mexican players a hard time in Spanish when Ireland played them in the World Cup. No doubt he was using some Basque stuff on them!
John was a proper fox in the box and Daglish was a fool to sell him because of a stupid 4 - 4 - 2 system. He should have kept Rush and Aldo together for at least another season.
Not an amazing footballer but few better when it came to getting on the end of things. One of the all time great goal scorers and so consistent with his goal scoring. Never went on goal droughts.
A bit of a contradiction Tom, don't you think? Not an amazing footballer but one of the great goal scorers of all time. I've never heard a great goal scorer called not great.
Grandisimo delantero.
Better than Rush💯. Aldo scored 31 goals in his final season @ Anfield absolute disgrace to sell him and so cheap. A natural born goalscorer who should have had more years @ the top divisions. Didn't understand why Arsenal or Spurs didn't go in for him. He would guarantee you 30 goals a season.
Its mental, imagine a striker going to La Liga and scoring 40 in 70 then signing for a Championship club nowadays, crazy stuff and those of us on Merseyside were blessed to go watch him in the flesh for very little gate fee.

I only started looking at Spanish football because John went there ! I still like club to this day . Respect from Ireland 🇮🇪
One the games greatest EVER finishers. And always worked so hard off the ball for his teams. Legend.
Brilliant player and a great fella too, Irish Scouse and Basque, what a combination.

He played for Ireland, not UK, so maybe that's the difference. Ireland had a golden generation in the 80's/90's and he was a huge part of it.
A natural goal scorer, always in the right positions in and around the box.

Not only a great scorer and great servant, simply a great man too!
First non-Basque player they ever signed!
