I think the reason that they both wore the masks that are completely covered and the reason Tyler isn't singing like normal is because this is blurryface performing. I think Tyler and Josh don't feel comfortable performing at things like this (televised, award shows, people that aren't part of the clique) so they are letting their insecurities shine through. just a thought.
If you pay attention she does know the lyrics. She's singing like she's singing along to the actual beat of the track, not the slowed down beat that Tyler is singing
At 4:39 Chainsmokers said ''what was that'' (as you can see from his mouth movements) I agree, I think it was disrespectful and that they're full of themselves.
He didn't say "what was that" in the sense that he meant it was bad. They have been huge fans of ToP for a long time as they have mentioned in several interviews. Alex just got his mind blown by the performance, hence "what was that".
after twenty one pilots' performance, the fact that alex im pretty sure had the nerve to ask "what was that" after they performed honestly made me angry. at least tyler doesnt choose to lipsync or use constant autotune. the chainsmokers are honestly so full of themselves. edit: i look back at this comment and cringe at myself i am SORRY LMAO why does this have so many likes

at 4:10 I get shivers every time!! the guitar hold, Tyler's jump, his perfect timing on singing and jumping, Josh's perfect drums, the blurryface montage w/strobe lights & the crowd lighting up even more. Just phenomenal. They deserved that Grammy.

there's so much shade being politely thrown through the way that they arranged this mashup. all these people are dancing like fools and not even realizing that they're being made fun of. ...these lyrics aren't for everyone. only few understand... 👽 I-/ 💀
Josh Redfield this band writes lyrics that are very meaningful and aren't necessarily "pop" lyrics! If you listen to their song migraine it talks about depression and what it feels like in very deep and meaningful lyrics! So in the song stressed out they talk about how everything is stressful as you get older and that it's all about work and the money! Blurry face is also a character who kinda represents his demons or anxiety! Lots of people who are part of the clique (tøp fan base) feel close to them and relate to their music because they base their moments of darkness in their songs that maybe other people have also gone through! It's really hard to explain their music to other people but I think you get the point! Also listen to car radio, it talks about when your left alone with your dark thoughts. So when people who mainly listen to mainstream pop music dance and sing along to their music, it's a little frustrating because they don't even understand what the song is about and really only like it because it's catchy and has a nice beat, but I'm not saying they can't listen to it bc they can listen to whatever they want! But yea sorry I wrote so much haha😂 but I hope you understood what I was saying!!!
Kaddy!!! Thanks for the awesome explanation, I did some research and now I understand everything , ITS SO AWESOME and deep, so In this video he's playing the character "blurry face" which explains his weird voice and the mask right? Correct me if I'm wrong , anyway I never really payed attention to all this , it's magnificent
Josh Redfield tyler and josh do not make music for money or for notoriety; they make music because it helps them get through their personal challenges and it helps those that identify with the music deal with their challenges as well. i firmly believe that they'd make music even if they never made a dollar. as long as they could help someone through a tough time - that's the payoff. so when they're awarded for something they never intended to do, it's troubling to them. they don't want to be a part of the "club" that all these other shallow celebrities belong to. they don't want bandwagon fans. they don't need money and awards to consider themselves successful. the way they arranged the set and the mashup spoke volumes to those sentiments; to me, at least. then the fact that they were completely covered up? everyone thought that was so interesting and cool when tyler and josh were basically giving the industry the metaphorical bird by doing so.
to us,this performance is anazing but to those in the audience who dont know tøp it must be weird af they must be like"who are the two dudes wih one on piano and bass and the other on drums in masks"
If your asking why it sounds different the way I see it is because it's live, if you want it the same way then just fucking listen to official one, but its LIVE, RAW, PURE and I'd go see it for for that expireence, you can't tell me that wasn't electrifying and an amazing performance. The colors, the beat, the change of vocal, the lights its was sick as Frick!!
4:39 the chainsmokers guy: "what was that" well, that was an amazing performance from a band that has saved many lifes. like mine. they have inspired people to live, helped us to get trough tough times, and they love us. and we love them. so that was a life savior. :)
What if this is Blurryface singing? After the part "My name's Blurryface and I care what you think." he says, "What's my name?" This might also explain the new masks. "Blurry". Of course, he can't make his face actually blurry, but he CAN cover it up.
They do not like to make presentations in programs like prizes and things like that. When they do presentations so tyler is not the one who is singing, this is singing blurryface
nerdyjock It is they're most recent and popular songs. I guess they played it because they are proud of how much people enjoy it, and most people in the crowd know it. But yeah, I agree, it would be great if they could bring back amazing and inspirational songs (not that their recent songs aren't) like ruby and drown
nerdyjock they mostly play heathens, ride, and stressed out at award shows, since most people who go to the award shows recognize and know those songs. It wouldn't make sense to play kitchen sink or ode to sleep or something unless it was at their own concert, where most of there fans would be.
They do it because its like celebrating the success of those songs. awards are either for that, or to promote. if twenty one pilots wouldve had an album this year, they would promote their single by performing it.
usually artists don't actually get to pick what they play at award shows...it's like in 1993 (1992? i dunno) when nirvana played the VMA's and tried to play a different song then the one they were supposed to play as a joke, and MTV almost cut the broadcast
i kinda wanted them to perform non mainstream songs like Lane Boy and Message Man so that they can actually vibe out the message that their music is an example of REAL music with real meanings and real truths.
RefleXEvoX well yeah but just because heathens and stressed out are their most popular songs don't make them any less worse than any of their other songs. They might not be my favorite songs but it's not like they're meaningless. It is "real" music they're made by the same people. Plus Tyler would always want us to sing along, no matter how mainstream stressed out, heathens, or ride gets. I mean he changed the lyrics to stressed out to show how he felt about the success and what the clique thought.
TheSketcher96 no, i think you got it misunderstood. what i meant was, i wanted them to perform those songs to show the MAJORITY of the singers in the event what real music is like. i didn't say Heathens and Stressed Out don't have good meanings haha. all of their songs have deep truths and meanings imo.
haha I know right!? I am so proud of tyler and josh I just realllllyyy hope all this doesn't change them into lifeless boring mechanized music like most of the people in that room. ya know?
"The chainsmokers: what was that? Me:That is talent...dude"😎 One of the things that I love about Top is that I never get bored with their songs (I spend a lot with pop songs like Ariana G., The Wekend, etc ...) I do not know every time I listen to their songs I find something new , A new feeling, a new meaning, a new world ...
Oh my god could you imagine. P!ATD,Twenty One Pilots, and Fallout Boy performing all at once at the AMAs. Like I can't really even comprehend that it is so fabulous.
I always feel so proud when they perform in these kind of situations, like in front of famous people, at awards shows. They really get themselves and their music and the very meaning of their songs on stage, and I'm proud that those people get to see that they are so special, so diverse, and so we are with them. I'm proud that they thanked us on that stage and showed how much they care about their fans and their live concerts.
I love how some assholes are saying they're live performances suck just because of this specific performance. Like, Tyler himself has said that they feed off the fans energy, and these were mainly celebrities and fans of others. TØP does NOT suck live, and this is coming from someone who's seen them several times in actual concerts of theirs. The nerve of some people.
"What was that?"
I'll tell you what it was. Better than what you can produce.
now i hate that asshole >:(

let tyler and josh live??? i cant respect the chainsmokers anymore in the same way i used to.
why? what did they do? (im slow sorry)
Kyra Agni At 4:41 the guy on the right from the chain smokers said what was that after the performance
there's so much shade being politely thrown through the way that they arranged this mashup. all these people are dancing like fools and not even realizing that they're being made fun of.
...these lyrics aren't for everyone. only few understand...
👽 I-/ 💀
Ashley Klug exactly!!
Ashley Klug what do u mean, can u explain please I'm really interested in knowing
Josh Redfield tyler and josh do not make music for money or for notoriety; they make music because it helps them get through their personal challenges and it helps those that identify with the music deal with their challenges as well. i firmly believe that they'd make music even if they never made a dollar. as long as they could help someone through a tough time - that's the payoff.
so when they're awarded for something they never intended to do, it's troubling to them. they don't want to be a part of the "club" that all these other shallow celebrities belong to. they don't want bandwagon fans. they don't need money and awards to consider themselves successful.
the way they arranged the set and the mashup spoke volumes to those sentiments; to me, at least. then the fact that they were completely covered up? everyone thought that was so interesting and cool when tyler and josh were basically giving the industry the metaphorical bird by doing so.
to us,this performance is anazing but to those in the audience who dont know tøp it must be weird af they must be like"who are the two dudes wih one on piano and bass and the other on drums in masks"
and this is barely a scratch of what their concerts are like... These people don't even understand how incredible they are
"notice that you cant see their faces. this movement is about the message, not the people behind it. and that is rarity in modern music"
I love it how josh changes the drums from the actual studio version and spices it up.
Especially tyler, he really likes changing it when its live
margo I like the voice effect he has when he performs heathens.
Scarlett not expecting the original as this is live but stillll TERRIBLEEEE!!!!
I like this live version, it's better than the original one, but I enjoy both anyway
I feel like something happened here, go watch their other live performances. They're amazing compared to this. Maybe they were anxious
4:39 the chainsmokers guy: "what was that"
well, that was an amazing performance from a band that has saved many lifes. like mine. they have inspired people to live, helped us to get trough tough times, and they love us. and we love them. so that was a life savior. :)
I remember seeing this live on tv and i was like TWENTY ONE PILOTS!!! And my stepdad was like what??
That explosion at the end tho hahahaha. they just had to throw that in there. I'm still buzzin from their show in Brussels
Sven Vee

I don't think I've ever seen Tyler in a mask that covers his eyes, but I think it looks really cool
Owen Donahue
They're the new masks. Apparently there will be a new album next year.
Bossy Ass Bitch noice
Owen Donahue They release their new album every two years
Hear that folks? Raw talent. No auto tune. Talent. Something we don't get often
What if this is Blurryface singing? After the part "My name's Blurryface and I care what you think." he says, "What's my name?" This might also explain the new masks. "Blurry". Of course, he can't make his face actually blurry, but he CAN cover it up.
Does anyone notice that tyler has a different style when singing live than in the original songs? I'm not saying it's bad, just an observation (:
Krystal BØØrd yeah a lot of artists do, it's pretty common actually
They do not like to make presentations in programs like prizes and things like that. When they do presentations so tyler is not the one who is singing, this is singing blurryface
He was sick during this concert,at least that is what everybody else is saying??
I guess so, I just always thought that's how he sang live in general. Maybe he is tired from touring
This performance gave me chills. They never fail to amaze me.
The Chainsmokers can only dream of having so much talent as they do plus their performance was really annoying
the chainsmokers guy was just laughing in shock at the end hahah
Actea Blossom I think their music is really annoying .
I wish they would play other songs, they have awesome songs and hey always play these
nerdyjock It is they're most recent and popular songs.
It wouldn't make sense to play kitchen sink or ode to sleep or something unless it was at their own concert, where most of there fans would be.
nerdyjock I think they just perform these songs at award shows because people outside the clique are more likely to know them
They do it because its like celebrating the success of those songs. awards are either for that, or to promote. if twenty one pilots wouldve had an album this year, they would promote their single by performing it.
usually artists don't actually get to pick what they play at award shows...it's like in 1993 (1992? i dunno) when nirvana played the VMA's and tried to play a different song then the one they were supposed to play as a joke, and MTV almost cut the broadcast
only reason I watched the awards.
I remember when they performed for free in a mall here in the Philippines. Imagine how much their concert tickets would be with their success now.
Fedi Berzerk tøp throw the best concerts in my opinion and their tickets aren't expensive at all |-/ either way its worth it
Tyler: what's my name??
Crowd: * stays silent *
Me: BLURRYFACE!!!!!!
I know I'm late, but this is one of the most unpredictable performances I have ever seen. And I am so glad I can live at the same time TOP do.
who wishes that were there
me!!!!!
natalie Lopez Nah I'd burst out laughing at 2:32
Ethereal Evanescent dem hands doe! lol
not this one lol
N.L. shadowcadet ᗰEEE
i kinda wanted them to perform non mainstream songs like Lane Boy and Message Man so that they can actually vibe out the message that their music is an example of REAL music with real meanings and real truths.
This performance proves why tøp are winning awards for best live shows.
Best performance of the night
Disconnected What about Green Day that performance was hype
Eh they were alright
Disconnected I love Twenty One Pilots but even I felt this performance was a bit weak. I would rank it the 2nd best performance.
We all got opinions and i respect yours
G.O .A.T yea with his dancing but I liked tøp a little better cause Tyler went crazy at the end
they did that
they sure did
spoopy lemons we did it
maricela cancion yega na vidad cinti
They need a half time super bowl show!
HALSEY JAMMING IN THE AUDIENCE IS SO CUTE YES
Sarah Lauer when? :)
The beginning of the performance was my favorite.
Torrie Lashae my favorite part is when the gun sound effects and Tyler starting playing the bass
Princess Courtney the bass guitar actually does that sound (in the music video)that sound not the gun
The mix of both songs in the beginning was pure GENIUS!!!!
0:57 guy in the background how dare you to look so.bored
TwentyØneChemicalDiscos RIGHT?
TwentyØneChemicalDiscos I noticed that too if I was there omg I would literally be screaming and jumping everywhere
haha I know right!? I am so proud of tyler and josh I just realllllyyy hope all this doesn't change them into lifeless boring mechanized music like most of the people in that room. ya know?
TwentyØneChemicalDiscos he is Nicolas Cage thats why
hahahah I also noticed that
"The chainsmokers: what was that?
Me:That is talent...dude"😎
One of the things that I love about Top is that I never get bored with their songs (I spend a lot with pop songs like Ariana G., The Wekend, etc ...) I do not know every time I listen to their songs I find something new , A new feeling, a new meaning, a new world ...
me too
My God that bass drop at 2:14 also.
ALEX I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU DONT SHUT YOUR MOUTH THE CLIQUE WILL SUFFICATE YOU IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
Oh my god could you imagine.
P!ATD,Twenty One Pilots, and Fallout Boy performing all at once at the AMAs. Like I can't really even comprehend that it is so fabulous.
Bry Berry that would make me the most happiest person in this world. Add Paramore or Green Day tho
Has anyone else realized that it's blurryface on stage instead of Tyler?
nic8o ikr like no one is talking about that
Omg i didn't realize it
I always feel so proud when they perform in these kind of situations, like in front of famous people, at awards shows. They really get themselves and their music and the very meaning of their songs on stage, and I'm proud that those people get to see that they are so special, so diverse, and so we are with them. I'm proud that they thanked us on that stage and showed how much they care about their fans and their live concerts.
4:40 "what was that?" Sorry chainsmokers, all you can do is press the space bar on your computer and call it "music"
Lara Pettersson LMAO TRUE 😂
I WANT THAT MASK
***** that's not the normal one, it's an alien mask
My taste in music is your PERSONALITY its not an alien mask its a ski mask with a strip of mesh over the eyes
oh lol, thanks.
My taste in music is your PERSONALITY I love your name XD
Crystal Dee Thank you! :D
This band is so freaking lit, why did I just find it now...
Caeley Rose EXACTLY
Caeley Rose YESS
Caeley Rose PREACH
preach
Thank you my fren
Anyone come here to see the chainsmokers reaction at the end?
Dun with getting kicked out of the Band same i couldn't find it anywhere else
e m i l y l o n g i cant find it anywhere else
No i'm here bc of the blurry face who's performing :)
“what was that?”
THAT WAS LEGITNESS
