  • Lymphoma Australia, alongside Janssen, were pleased to host a special live webinar event about chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).
    Our guest speakers included:
    Associate Professor Matthew Davids, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Lymphoma and Associate Director of the CLL Centre at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, USA. He is a leading investigator in the clinical development of the BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax. He runs a research laboratory focused on CLL and leads numerous clinical trials of novel agent combination regimens for patients with CLL.
    He presented:
    - Overview of CLL
    - Current standard therapies in the USA and Australia
    - Genetic testing and what does this mean in regards to treatment
    - Current international research and investigation for new treatments in CLL
    Dr Jason Butler, vice-chair Lymphoma Australia, a Senior Staff Haematologist with Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and a clinical haematologist at Icon Cancer Centre, QLD. Dr Butler introduced presenters and joined the expert panel where he provided the Australian context for the treatment and management of CLL patients.
    Dr Brian Koffman is the co-founder of the CLL Society in the USA and is a well-known doctor (now retired GP), educator professor turned patient. He has dedicated himself for advocating, to teaching and helping the CLL community since his diagnosis in 2005. His presentation covered:
    - CLL Society in the USA - development of this organisation and aim
    - Patients need to be their own advocate and know the information relevant to you
    - Campaign “Test before you treat”
    - What has helped him during his cancer journey
    Deborah Sims is a CLL patient, young mother of 3 and a patient advocate after being diagnosed with CLL in 2011. Deborah has fought to have access to life-saving treatments and continues to fight for others to ensure there is equitable access for all patients.
    - Provided an overview of her CLL experience
    - How and why it is important to advocate for yourself
    - The importance of clinical trials
    Expert panel held with all presenters, including Dr Jason Butler. Moderated by Donna Gairns, National Nurse Manager. The session was closed by Sharon Millman CEO.
