As an introvert with social anxiety and a big lack of self-confidence, I definitely believe solo traveling would change me for the better! I really feel like I need to do this because I'll have no choice but to get out of my comfort zone every day. I'm planning my first solo trip to Nicaragua and Costa Rica in the beginning of 2023, I'm beyond excited!

Being also an introvert, during solo travel I turn into a social butterfly. The hostels always have some cool people that you hang out with in the common areas, at the cafe or the bar you go, you can find companions, diners or people working. Back home I'm usually my introvert self though.

When I was 18 my friend and I went on a 3-month backpacking trip around Europe. It changed my life. We had a great time. We planned to go again 2 years later. When it came time to buy tickets, he said he wasn't going. His girlfriend didn't want him to go. At first I was mad. Then I decided...I'm just going alone. Best decision ever. I had an even better time. She is right: you meet more ppl when you are alone. I had ppl let me stay in their houses, take me home so their mom could make me dinner, etc. I don't hesitate to go alone now. I like traveling with my travel partner, too, but am not afraid to go solo. Yes, there may be a few lonely moments, but so what.

I recently found your channel as I prepared my first solo trip and my first trip abroad. I am 47 and have always wanted to travel, but I got married young and had children young and never had the financial resources. Now that my four kids have been leaving the nest, I am hopeful that I can experience more travel in the future-even if I have to do it solo.

I found when I solo traveled that you always have to be self motivating which takes energy but the benefit is you get to see and do what you want. Sometimes I would stay at a hostel and tag along with others which was a nice break, but it meant not always eating at or going where you might have imagined. This can be an adventure of its own too and takes less energy. Some people can create new interests in you. In this sense its a misconception that traveling solo always means being alone in fact it means meeting new interesting strangers. Also I found that traveling with someone you know can be limiting because instead of testing new boundaries you fall back on your friend like a crutch and don't discover as much.

Great video! When I was 15 I was on a HS exchange to Germany. They called the night before departure to say I had to fly alone because of a mistake. I was so scared, but did it and my dad said "that's all she wrote". I had the most possible fun, and now I'm fairly reluctant to travel with anyone. At 25, I traveled Europe for the summer before grad school. I've had great solo adventures in SE Asia, North Africa, Chile and Argentina, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and many other places. You're SO right about having more opportunities when you're on your own. You're more approachable and more alert to everything, rather than relying on someone else. It's the only way to go!

"FUCK FRIENDS. Go to that concert by yourself, don't wait on people, do what you want to do, go to that park by yourself, go eat that restaurant you keep saying you want to go, go try all those crazy shits you always wanted to try, don't wait on people.. And if your friends don't want to do it.. Do it anyways"
Your video and this quote listed above honestly makes me feel better that I am travelling alone. Am I the only one who thinks solo travelling may be more fun than travelling with friends...yes it can feel lonely, dangerous, and more difficult overall, but making all the 100% decisions by yourself can be fun and challenging at the same time - as you mentioned it really does sharpen intuition.
Maybe I really am the only one who thinks solo travel is better, but that may be because I don't have many friends, or truthfully don't have any friends :(

    • @Bemytravelmuse
      @Bemytravelmuse  2 года назад

i cant wait to solo travel abroad because the best part of going to cities by myself is that selfishness haha! I love not worrying about what other people in my group want to do, or feel like i need to plan to their needs. i can go home from the museum early, or i can stay late. i can eat 'weirder' food, i can just sit on a bench in a park for an hour if id like! pure bliss

So true! I do travel solo all the time and I can confirm all of your points. Apart from trips with my family when I was still in school, I have actually never travelled with another person. Next year will be the first time that I will travel for a longer time (than a weekend) with a friend, and with one that I am actually not that close with at that. I am a bit scared!
Here is why: I went on a weekend trip with my best friend for the first time this fall. We both love solo travel, get around a lot in the world and know each other quite well. I always thought that travelling together would be amazing. What I realised is that we have a very different type of daily rhythm. She gets up early and goes to sleep early, I am the opposite. She becomes cranky when tired or hungry, I just become quiet. It was still a nice trip but it was quite short. I decided to never do a longer trip with her. We would annoy each other so much!
Now I am afraid that I will find out that my other friend and I also don't match when it comes to travel. I feel a bit responsible for him because I know the region a bit, for him it's the first time on another continent. In the worst case scenario we could always split up, but I would rather like that it doesn't come to that. So instead of being afraid of travelling solo, I am afraid of travelling with a friend... 😂

I'd suggest you set up days with blocks of time (4-6 hours or more) where you're each on your own. He can do what he wants and so can you. You'll meet up for dinner refreshed and with fun tales to share. That's the ONLY way I'll agree to travel with someone else. I'm not willing to compromise when it's my only chance in that place. I'm also willing to forgo sleep or food for fun, and hate to waste time in a restaurant in the middle of a sunny day. I get breakfast and buy some picnic food for lunch in a park or garden while out and about. Grocery stores are wonderful places to visit and explore.

Not only travel. People are bewildered of the idea of people doing things such as watching movies, going for a coffee or eating out alone. I find it even more fun. And travel...I almost didn't go to any trip past my college days with other people. One package tour (I was solo in that group of couples and families) and one with my brother and friends and the opinion differences were so strong that I had a big fight and did not speak for one week......with my own brother! I hate to make a compromise when traveling and hate to force other people to make a compromise. As you said you make the rules (well except for some unexpected problems, the museums being under restoration, unusual situations making you miss your train/bus/flight/closing time of an attraction, weather conditions, broken phone, etc.) This applies to the movies-meals too.
Many multiple-people traveling parties meet dangers as well.

I love traveling alone and PREFER it. I want to move organically through a place and be able to experience the people, the culture, and all the sensory things unique to an area. Having other people with me is distracting. I also don't want everything to have to be aa democratic discussion over how long we stay somewhere, what we do, whether we accept an invitation from a local or check out something we spot while there, etc. I want to be fully free to guide my experience according to my travel preferences. The only way I'd enjoy having someone with me more than being myself is if their travel style is exactly like mine. The only thing that sucks is that being female makes certain parts of the world that I really want to experience off-limits to me because of safety. Otherwise I'd love to see Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, and N. Africa.

Two things you highlighted from the beginning are, to me, of the most importance.
    1. Solo I make the decisions as to when, where, and how I'll go places. And why and what I'll do when I'm there.
    2. Solo is SO MUCH EASIER to meet people, because when you're in a couple situation. Whether it's platonic or romantic, there is an innate sense that 'together time' is one of the priorities of the trip. Whereas, when you're on your own, or with a larger group, you can mix and mingle as you wish, or don't wish, and no one can influence you either way.

The parts about not having to decide everything by committe are true regardless of your gender, but whether and to what extent the locals will be friendly to you..................................yeah, no-one is going to be that friendly to you if you are a guy travelling independently, and certainly no-one is going to take you under their wing.
On the flip side, if you are in decent enough shape as a guy and look confident, the chances of you getting mugged are basically zero, as there are easier targets.
